Amazon All or Nothing Michigan discussion

Submitted by HAIL-YEA on

So I have been waiting for someone to post a discussion thread, and nothing has been posted yet unless I missed it. I know you all binge watched it, don't act like you didn't. So what did you  think, did you learn anything you didnt know?

I thought it was great. Very well done, as bad as things went last year I expected this thing to be a terrible watch, I was wrong.

Some things I learned

1. Pep Hmilton was calling most of the plays? I figured he was more involved when Drevno came down from the booth but it seems like he was calling them.

2. Chase Winovich is friggin hilarious. He should be mic'd up every game

3.Wilton Speight did not come off great. Honestly I just don't think I would find him likable even if he was a good qb.

4. Don Brown is even more likable then I thought. The guys personality is awesome. Rare combo of being a really nice guy, funny, and the best D coordinator in the country.

What do you guys think? I don't think they could have done a better job with this special, really a great watch.

Nobody they put in there was gonna complete long passes in the rain against MSU. We're not even in the game against Wisconsin if Peters doesn't start. OSU they threw everything but the kitchen sink at them, maybe. But he wasnt hitting open receivers against teams with losing records, so I don't like his chances against OSU either.

Probably hard for you to remember how bad Michigan was back then since you were like 10 in 2008... Okorn came from a spread system, he would have been much better running a spread system

Obviously we're talking hypotheticals here, but JOK had a great season as a pure freshman at Houston, showing a dynamic ability to run and throw. If he had been available with that background to RR in 2008, he would have chosen him over Sheridan and Threet in a heartbeat. Whether he would have been more successful at QB under RR than he was under Harbaugh is another question.

RR's system was to get up to the line quick, have RR and Magee make the read based on the defense, send that in, and have the QB run a specific play with usually 1 read.  It's still complex, but JOK probably would have done well in the system.  Throws were usually pretty short too.  He would have probably been passed once Tata got there though.

The first thing you have to do in order to improve or correct a problem is acknowledge there is a problem. Speight does not do that. It showed me that it was definitely a good move to move on from him. He wasn't going to improve because he didn't think he had any areas in which he needed improvement.

You look at his stats first 7 games of 2016 and comapre them to anything he did after that they're night and day. He had 5 games where his QBR was in the nineties, one of which being in EL, and he didn't even come close to a 90+ QBR since the 2016 Maryland game.

Pretty sure pep calls the PASSING plays. I still get the impression drevno calls the runs. With so much emphasis on who is qb and the passing games struggles to evolve past a kakuna I think pep was shown calling a lot of plays because it was all about the passing game.

Drevino?  Dude - you don't even know who he is!  You did it twice!

But I do think Drevno was largely edited out.  I've only watched the first three (so far), but in #2, against AF, I heard Harbaugh say "Drev, we need to crack them open with the run".  The next play they showed was Higdon going for his 30-some yd TD run.  So, while they don't show Drev doing much (and his demeanor may well be very different from Pep), I doubt he was as detached as its being portrayed.

in who Harbaugh wants in his ear calling the plays.

Just because it's Pep, doesn't mean that Drevno didn't contribute some or all of the CREATION of the play itself.

I'm sure JH wants one calm voice in his ear, that understands playcalling, and particularly, the abilities and moods of his QBs.

I agree with your editing point too, I don't think anyone can look at the limited screen time of Drevno and conclude it's beause he sucked, or had no input in the offense, etc.

I loved getting to see behind the scenes and learning more about our players and coaches. I hated rewatching the losses. Spoiler alert - It feels close to the same as it did the first time.

Top moments for me:
1. Speight’s girlfriend telling him he didn’t really play that well. True transparency.
2. Realizing how much Pep actually mentors and means to the team.
3. Everything Don Brown. I wish we had that Dude when he was younger so we could have him for longer.
4. Helping me see how much more it means to them than it should mean to me. Seeing Gary sob after the MSU game really drove this home. I feel like I live and die with the team, but all I’m doing is watching (and spending way too much time on this site). No matter how low my lows are, it’s infinitely worse for the players and coaches.

It’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

My thoughts exactly. I consider myself a diehard fan. I’m fairly upset after a loss usually. But the players take them waaayy harder then us fans. Also they are a lot more excited after a win it seems. When we beat Indiana, I was still a little disappointed in the way they played. But the players and coaches were ecstatic. It just shows how hard it really is to win.

LIKE everyone else I noticed Harbaugh appeared way more calm last season than any other season... I wonder if having the Amazon crew around had something to do with it. He hasn't lost it once (I'm on episode 5). As for the QBs Spright seems fine to me, yeah he complained... To his girlfriend...he was probably just being vulnerable and there were cameras around. Okorn... did not like him complaining to Gentry and about the Oline.

I'm only two episodes in but definitely agree with you on Speight. He's not coming well at all thus far. At the same time, I found the indecision by the coaching staff, Harbaugh in particular, to be frustrating. For example, the beginning of the 2nd half of the Florida game when he very bashfully says, "Speight's in", and has to repeat himself because it's almost like he's avoiding having to say it.

Forgive me bc the iPhone app sucks...

O’Korn loves to blame everyone around him. Tries to motivate and be the “good teammate” but clearly in over his head. Just not a good player on the field. Convinces Harbaugh he can do more than he actually can. Hurts the team as a result.

I would run through a fucking wall for Don Brown. Could/should be a head coach. Unreal charisma out of that guy.

Pep is a good dude. I feel the Amazon series downplayed Drevno just bc Michigan told them to.

Speight clearly took his injury hard. Can’t blame the guy but,bI feel he wasn’t there in 2017. Was NOT ready to lead this team to greatness. Clear physical limitations.

Larry Prout and Newsome episode will CRUSH your soul. Not great documentary work but just an unbelievable story. If you don’t have a feeling you’re not human.

More to come...

For someone who supposedly doesn't care about what people think, Wilton Speight sure talks a lot about what people think. Also, whenever Pep would tell him what motivational message he needed to convey to the offense, Wilton would repeat it verbatim, and it felt like he couldn't come up with anything on his own. I hope they didn't make Mo ask that kid in the Uber about the football team. Harbaugh is weird. Don Brown is amazing. I also really like Pep, he seems to be pretty sensible. 4th episode is the MSU game so I think I'll hold off for a while. I have had enough sports disappointment this week, I don't need to relive some.

drev called out run plays. pep called out passing plays. harbaugh made final call. my impresssion was unless it was an obvious run or pass play situation, the three would first decide whether to run or pass. then based on that pep or drev would call out a play and harbaugh would either agree and pass it along to team or ask for different play.

Don’t know what type of editing approvals harbaugh and the AD had, but it does feel a little like the story that is being told fits a little too nicely into the narrative for the season. Drevno being out of touch, qbs being subpar, etc... what surprised me is how easily rattled the qbs appeared. Hamilton came off as very encouraging yet the qbs seemed so low confidence and easily shook. Either it’s from getting hit so often or maybe other coaches approach to handling QBs.

I've worked in TV for a long time, and have worked on documentary's and long form content before.  There are likely hundreds if not thousands of hours of footage to go through for this show.  Drevno only officially left the program in late Feb.  I highly doubt some sort of last minute edict came down from Michigan to cut scenes with Drevno and prop up Pep.  The amount of time it would take to pull those scenes out, replace them with new ones, and still keep the flow and feel of each episode in tact would take an awful lot of work.  Enough work that if I'm the production crew I liklely say no.
