Unverified Voracity Is Now Just A Series Of David DeJulius Embeds
Keith Jackson remembered by several people. At SBN:
That training meant calling everything ABC threw at him, but college football was different. One of Jackson’s gifts that made him so, so good at college football games was to make the viewer feel at home wherever the game might be. Ann Arbor became the Big House, Nebraska became the friendliest town in the world, and even beneath “the broad shoulders of the San Gabriel Mountains” you could feel at home, because ... well Keith did, didn’t he? Nowhere wasn’t home on a Saturday if Keith was calling it, because he had a map with a single line connecting everything.
This was all part of a whole to him. The things with names had definite pronunciations only Keith could nail; the things without names would be given them in time. The language of this sport — right down to the love for the great, the ugly, the undersized, the local, and the brutal — is his.
"That big smiling face, and just the thrill and the love he had for doing college football," Bob Griese told SportsCenter when asked what he'd remember about Jackson, his longtime broadcast partner whom he started working with in 1985.
"He did it for a long, long time. ... He never intruded on the game. It was always about the kids on the field. Never, never shining the light on himself. And that was one of the things that I most admired about him."
By Andy Staples:
It was probably on some lazy Saturday afternoon or evening in 1990 when the sound burned itself into my memory. I was in seventh grade, and a Notre Dame linebacker with a previously checkered career was in the midst of an All-America season. He must have been playing on the road, because if he’d been in South Bend, Brent Musburger would have been the one saying his name. Instead, Keith Jackson was calling the game, and when that linebacker made a tackle, Jackson said…
Miiichael Stooooonebreaker.
And there it was.
From that point forward, the quintessence of college football in my mind was Keith Jackson saying the name Michael Stonebreaker as a drumline pounds out a beat between plays. I can’t think of the sport without hearing those two words uttered by that voice. I cover college football for a living, so I think about college football a lot. Consequently, my brain frequently serves up the memory of Keith Jackson identifying a 225-pound middle linebacker from Louisiana playing for a Catholic university in Indiana.
"I can't get them any more open than that." You may have had some similar frustrations midway through the Maryland game:
“I can’t get em more open than those 2 shots.”

Sounds like fun. Next year's schedule is kind of a doozy:

@ ND, @ OSU, @ MSU plus crossover games against a couple ten win teams in Wisconsin and Northwestern will do that.
Priority one: don't pay anyone. This would be an insane way to defuse the increasing media heat on the NCAA for restricting player mobility:
I spoke w/ an NCAA official this week who was “95% certain” transfers will soon be allowed to play immediately in basketball & football. Could be a one-time freebie, plus grad transfer option. So in theory, a student-athlete could play for three different schools w/o sitting out.
— Matt Schick (@ESPN_Schick) January 17, 2018
The grad transfer rule already sucks out loud for lower-level schools. Creating open season on every all-conference football and basketball player turns the MAC into a collection of JUCOs, essentially. It's far worse for competitive balance than paying kids would be, because you get to swoop in on anyone you missed and yoink them. You're also inviting kids to leave whatever degree program they're in for sports, damaging your hoary claims to academic integrity.
But it would eliminate a set of arguments against amateurism, so full speed ahead. Because keeping the money is all they care about.
Frank Ragnow on Ben Herbert. Strong, detailed praise for Michigan's new S&C guy:
"He's probably one of the most detail-oriented people I've ever met," Ragnow said. He then paused. "Actually, he is the most detail-oriented person I've ever been around. The first thing he's going to do with his players is a thorough individual evaluation of them. He'll learn their tendencies, strengths and weaknesses and try to get a feel for how their body reacts to different movements and different processes. Nutrition-wise, I'm guessing the Michigan players are going to learn a lot. Coach Herb is always finding new ways to gain an edge on the nutrition side of things and it was probably the one part of how he did things that I learned and took the most out of."
In addition to being good at S&C stuff, Ragnow "wouldn't let" Steve Lorenz hang up until he'd expressed what an excellent dude he was as well.
Exit various Irish. In addition to a few NFL departures, Brian Kelly booted four dudes. Three are offensive skill guys and will be relevant for Michigan's upcoming series against the Irish:
Stepherson was arguably Notre Dame’s most explosive receiver last season, finishing with 19 catches for 359 yards and five touchdowns. However, he was held out of the season’s first four games for a suspension that Notre Dame never publicly acknowledged.
The departures of McIntosh and Holmes come after a single public rules violation and seriously dent Notre Dame’s running back depth chart. With Josh Adams off to the NFL Draft, the Irish will likely open spring ball with just three scholarship running backs in Dexter Williams, Tony Jones Jr. and early enrollee Jahmir Smith.
The fourth is a DL who wasn't going to be in the rotation anyway.
Etc.: Andrew Ebbett and Chad Kolarik make the Canadian and American Olympic hockey teams, respectively. Francis Atuahene set to go high in the MLS Superdraft. Trey Burke reunited with THJ. Minnesota reporter suggests that there should be a Red Berenson trophy. I'm in.

There's a reason why ESPN is picking Clemson as the preseason #1 next football season... #63 out of 66 in strength of schedule. Sheesh...
January 17th, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^
Bama and UGA also have very easy rows to hoe. All three should reach their conference championship game undefeated, and all three might just make the playoff again if things fall the right way.
B1G, Big 12, Pac 12 each have to hope that the other two don't produce an undefeated team. If someone wins the Big Ten at 12-1 or better they're going to make the playoffs on SOS.
January 17th, 2018 at 2:49 PM ^
I kept scanning and scanning to find Alabama, because, you know, the SEC West is THE BEST in all of College Football. Oh, 57th you say. What a joke.
Also, Washington & Washington St. must play the exact same schedule? They are ranked back-to-back.
January 17th, 2018 at 3:13 PM ^
I have to wonder if the BIG and Pac12 might dump the 9th conference game. It didn't seem to do the conferences any good the last couple years.
Go back to the plan to have a BIG PAC challenge every year.
January 17th, 2018 at 3:18 PM ^
Well, it's nice to maintain the impression that you are one conference, even when you are a 14-team monstrosity. Eight conference games would basically end that.
January 17th, 2018 at 5:26 PM ^
January 18th, 2018 at 11:52 AM ^
B1G should add two more teams. 7 game division schedule, 4 game cross-divisional schedule, 1 warm up game against a cream puff. You play everyone in the Big 10 at home and away within a 4-year span. We'll show them how strong our conference is during bowl season. Ride SOS to send the conference champion to the playoff. Just make sure those added schools allow you strengthen the West while not weakening the East.
January 17th, 2018 at 3:56 PM ^
Georgia's 9 Power 5 teams on the schedule combined for 60 wins last year and Bamas combined for 64. Each play one 10 win team from this year, Auburn. Georgia OOC Austin Peay, Middle Tennessee State, UMass, and Georgia Tech. Bama's OOC Louisville, Arkansas State, Louisiana Lafayette, and the Citadel.
Our 10 Power 5 teams combined for 83 wins and the team plays 6 10 win teams from last year including 3 in a row with a bye between the 2nd and 3rd game. Needless to say, we are not competing on a level playing field.
January 17th, 2018 at 4:00 PM ^
I have a feeling some of those 10-win teams (looking in your direction, Northwestern and ND) are not going to do that again. (Northwestern went 3-0 in overtime games and won its bowl on a failed 2-point conversion - they lived a charmed life this past season.) It'll still be a pretty good schedule but won't be #1 in the country.

Rutgers is so high because, well, they're Rutgers...
January 17th, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^
Is the reason I believe our record will be similar to this year's, albeit with a much better team. Notre Dame though is the one that I still dont get-ANYBODY could look at this year's upcoming games and see it was going to be brutal - why add a difficult road game out of choice to an already insanely difficult schedule?
Dont care "that's what Jimmy wanted". Warde should've said no.
Don't want to hear "this will help our SOS." Our strength of schedule without Notre Dame would already by top 5.
Don't want to read "I'd rather prove how tough we are with this schedule". See Alabama for an example on how to schedule yourself into the final four.
And lastly I really, really dont want to deal with the "I love playing Notre Dame and missed the rivalry". Grow a pair and tell those bastards to go fuck themselves. They dumped us, we should NOT have gone crawling back to them.
January 17th, 2018 at 2:13 PM ^
January 17th, 2018 at 2:16 PM ^
Warde wasn't hired to tell Jim Harbaugh "no." You can say you hold that against him, but you can't.
I love Harbaugh and I still expect him to build a winner. But if this is a mistake, then it's his mistake. He can and should have veto over this sort of thing and he accepted it. Warde is not at fault here if he was doing what Harbaugh wanted him to do.
January 17th, 2018 at 2:37 PM ^
But as the alleged leader of our athletic department doesnt he bear SOME responsibility to do what's best for the universtiy, not just Harbaugh? And as badly as JH might've wanted ND back on the schedule shouldnt Warde have worked just a bit harder to save Jimmy from Jimmy in this case?
FWIW my entire old tailgating crew dropped their season tickets this year (about 15 total) cause the schedule was so bad and paying top dollar to go 8-5 with crappy home games wasnt much fun. Warde needs to be careful in his role as enabler to whatever Harbaugh wants - he might find out nobody, even Jim himself, is happy with the result.
January 17th, 2018 at 3:22 PM ^
I don't know if it's really that big of a deal. I expect ND to be a typical 8-5 Kelly team next year.
Regarding your second paragraph, isn't this what your friends want? Opponents like ND?
January 17th, 2018 at 8:46 PM ^
People complain about Akron being too bad and will now complain about ND being too good. Some want to play a 7-5 Iowa team every week. But never at Kinnick.

and what I thought from the day I heard we are playing ND and not only playing them, but going to their house to do it? They have bent us over on the scheduling and dumping the series and we always run back to them. We are like some abused lover who says, well when he's not drinking he's actually nice, and then go back to them.
Fuck ND and ever playing those assholes again. I would've rather kept Arkansas on the schedule. Playing down in SEC country spreads our footprint a lot more then some asshole team in Indiana will.

You've been around here as long as me. You KNOW that if there's one thing this place hate, hates, HATES and will respond with downvotes is reasonable pessimism. Start a ridiculous thread claiming we're going 15-0 next year because of our new S & C coach and you'll be loved. Start a reasonable thread saying we're far more likely to be 8-5 cause I schedule is stupid hard and you won't be.
Even though it's true.
Sorry scratch that.....probably BECAUSE it's true..

ND's schedule after us is fairly easy. Whoever wins that game is in drivers seat for a playoff spot IMO.

Dejulius could be something special. He has an extremely quick change of direction that makes his stutter step and crossover lethal. He also can hit from very deep, since many of his threes are pulling up in someones face from nba three distance. Combine all of that with the fact that he is already a pretty strong guard and I am very excited for him. I think he is going to be damn good here, and I am surprised he isn't rated higher than he is. Between him and Brandon Johns, I think there is a very good chance Mr. Basketball goes to a future Michigan basketball player for the 2nd year in a row.

January 17th, 2018 at 2:23 PM ^
January 17th, 2018 at 2:56 PM ^
Of course it is a murderous gauntlet. Let's see...
The OOC schedule:
Louisville to open in Orlando (they just lost a former Heisman Trophy winner, of course they are still good)
Arkansas State Red Wolves - Red Wolves are more ferocious than regular wolves.
UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns - Did you see those Cajuns? They were Ragin'...at Bryant Denny Stadium
And of course, the annual patsy before the Iron Bowl The Citadel. (Is that like THE Ohio State University)
In conference they play: Ole Miss (hmmmm...) Texas A&M (new coaching staff), Arkansas (new coaching staff), Missouri (new coaching staff), Tennessee (new coaching staff), LSU (Cajun Hoke), Mississippi State (new coaching staff) and Auburn.
HOW CAN THIS BE POSSIBLE!!!!!!
January 17th, 2018 at 3:02 PM ^
Cause they're WAY smarter than we are and schedule so they can make it to the final four, not prove how tough they are by scheduling teams that could....you know...beat them?
Can you imagine what would happen if the SEC tried to ram down Alabama's throat a schedule where they played Auburn in back to years at Auburn?
We are like the drunken idiot wandering around a bar looking for the biggest guy in the place with so we can pick a fight to prove how tough we are. Yes we're going to get our ass whooped but man...did you SEE how fearless we were before it happened?
Alabama, on the other hand, is the dude sitting at the bar waiting to hit on the drunk's girlfriend once he gets his ass both beaten and thrown in jail.
January 17th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
Well, when you put it that way, according to MSU fans, they should never go into a bar.
January 17th, 2018 at 9:02 PM ^
Why is this betting upvotes? It's so silly. College football is about games like Michigan-ND, where OOC powerhouses play games their fans can actually get to without being rich assholes who can get on a plane. ND has some of the best Michigan football memories we have. Grbac to Howard doesn't happen against Akron. Yeas it's unusually tough this year, it's not always.
I'd much rather watch great games than play shit in order to improve chances for a playoff. Don't worry about a national title, we're probably not there yet. B1G title and let's win some big games
If we're that good, we'll get into the playoff at 11-2

Thinks we're going 14-0 every year (13-1 if things dont break right)

Their cupcake schedule didn't hurt them this year and I doubt it'll hurt them next year. They played one team with a pulse and lost to them. Their best win was a 4-loss LSU team
January 17th, 2018 at 3:48 PM ^
how stupid it is to face a tough gauntlet and that SOS isn't that big of a deal. If UM played a schedule like Alabama and went 12-0 they would be in the CFP and not passed over like a UCF. Our schedule this year is ridiculous with that addition of ND on the road being the worst scheduling since playing App St (twice)

NEVER again will i ever, ever, ever look at a team hit hard by attrition and know its a gimmie. I still cannot beleive we did not bury them this year.
