Recruiting director Matt Dudek responds to Twitter trolls...
So there is a small, but growing faction of people, who have been voicing their displeasure and concern about the '18 class. They claim that we are getting left in the dust in comparison to OSU's recruiting. When you look at the recruiting rankings and the classes OSU has coming in over the next few years, that may be true. That frustration boiled over in a heated Twitter exchange with recruiting director Matt Dudek. Looks like the trolls have finally gotten to him.

Personally, I'm not a star gazer or one who puts tremendous stock in recruiting rankings, but there are many in the fanbase that do. True, there is a stark difference in talent that OSU has in the '18 class and what Michigan is getting star-wise. I think it's just a result of some misses on our end and a bad season and I think the '19 class will be as good as any and there's no reason to worry.
For those out there that are worried about the '18 class or the disparity in apparent talent that OSU is bringing in and what Michigan is bringing in, can you explain the rationale of why you're freaking out over one average class?

I think you can be both happy for the kids that commit and at the same time be concerned that we only have one top 100 guy, our rival has the # 1 class in the country, we might have decommits, and the guys that we're in on (Friday, Chase) are trending away.

It's not a zero sum game between them and us. I don't like losing players we have a good shot at to them, but that's not quite the same thing. Harbaugh and staff just have to put together the best classes they can. I don't think you try harder if OSU is recruiting great or slack off if they stumble.
December 17th, 2017 at 7:37 AM ^
I read somewhere that 11 of their dudes are ranked higher than our highest-ranked guy.
I'm of the opinion that Harbaugh has a good eye for athleticism and talent, especially for the kind of stuff he wants to run. I also think that Michigan's coaching staff is better than what Ohio State has, particularly with the stability now on defense. But even bearing all that in mind, you're hoping Michigan can pull in some dudes that pull up the probabilities of hitting on a star.

never mind

It's about that maybe our recruiting director shouldn't be getting into arguments with trollz on the internet. I get on one hand that Harbaugh does it from time to time but Harbaugh actually calls out real people, he's not just yelling at nameless, faceless folks about nonsense. Just focus on the 'croots Matt.
December 16th, 2017 at 8:59 PM ^
How is Harbaugh supposed to recruit at the same level as Bama and OSU if we aren’t performing at that level on the field?

from Ole Miss? I heard transcript issue a couple days ago and I apologize for spending less time on the blog than usual :-) been busy.... so does transcript mean he didn't have the grades?
I prefer we get wherever we can get, with whoever we can get, with the required grades, and without cheating. Meyer and Saban don't care about either.

more likely means not enough of his credits were accepted for him to be eligible. Our coach doesn't get to decide who Admissions accepts. As a Michigan fan, I prefer that.

Everyone knew they improved after we played them last year and had McSorely & Barkley back etc.
But after last years drubbing, NO ONE here predicted the ass-pounding they handed out this year. Maybe not as surprising as the MSU loss, but probably more demoralizing.
December 17th, 2017 at 11:19 AM ^
A lot of games had been played since we had crushed PSU last year. They were obviously a much improved team. I think that PSU was the game people were the most pessimistic about, including the chances of it not being competitive.
December 17th, 2017 at 11:44 AM ^
but those "rational" takes really didn't start to materialize until after everyone saw how dominant PSU was to start the season, and how shaky Michigan was during the same time period.
During the off season, getting embarassed by PSU was not even remotely a popular opnion.

Recruit rankings are nothing more than recruiting for dummy handboks anyways.
December 16th, 2017 at 9:32 PM ^
And before anyone acts like I don’t care about wins and losses, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone more competitive and wanting to win every game than me.
This board should have a rule that you can only complain about the football team if you watched every game from Rich Rod’s first season.....I did, but I doubt very few of the complainers did.

You have no "rights" when it comes to anything sports related. You can feel unhappy if you want. But then you just prove you're only about wins and losses today, and not about the trend of the program. If you can't see that its in FAR better shape now than it was when Hoke was hanging out, you're a fucking idiot.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being concerned about the quality of this class at this time.
It's nowhere near as good as what we've seen the past 2 years.
That being said, let's let the coaches and staff finish the class before freaking out.
We won't know for 2-3 years in all reality, but there are plenty of great 3 star recruits as Dudek stated.

Twitter might be the worst invention in the last 100 years next to hot dog eating contests. The last thing the world needs is quips that should be confined to a family room bullshit session around a game being put on full blast for the world to ponder, dissect and analyse. Twitter is just garbage. Never been on it, never will.

I think it's a fair question and I was curious as to why are all doom and gloom over one less than steller recruiting class. Especially, when '19's class looks great so far. Rough crowd, I suppose.
December 16th, 2017 at 10:42 PM ^
There are probably only 2, maybe 3 thousand people who don't think this is unprofressional and a really really bad idea that might get him fired.
Ask Moeller; you don't ever ever defend yourself against your own fanbase, especially when they have unreasonable expectations, gigantic entitlement issues and delusional confidence in their total understanding of everything about college football.
Of course.... the 3000 people who might think this is kinda cool are all 15-17 year old high school football players that might appreciate someone sticking up for the commits because........ well, ......a lot of you college football fans are assholes.
So maybe Matt is doing his exact fucking job.

I mean, I want him to do well because: Michigan recruiting.
But his twitter's a bad look. Best practice is not to feed trolls. It just draws things out, is very unlikely to make you come off well, and there's not a ton of upside. Plus you have the chance to get skewered for some dumb misstep in some battle you didn't have to fight.
As John U Bacon quotes: never turn a one day story into a two day story.
Also looking at responses. More than once he goes for the insult about someone having a low amount of followers. And another time he brags about an expensive dinner. Way to punch down bro! Scoring points off of privledge is a pretty poor strategy long term. So is repeating your "just being mean" hot take.
Honestly these people are jerks for trolling him, but after reading his account it's hard to think highly of him.
I'd prefer he had a bit more self control, or at least found someone more versed in social media best practices to vet him. He's pretty embarassing.
