Will Harbaugh Change The Offense To Fit Shea Patterson's Skill Set?

and even with these concerns. What a great problem to have

Had over 160 yards rushiig including sacks. I remember multiple 1st downs gained by Rudock. Also.... He brought a team led by Kaepernick to the Superbowl.
I think he can build around a QB who can run

One look at QB offers going out, shows this can certainly that option in the future. Will be interesting to see if its more packages/wildcat, or legit Duel-T QB.
December 8th, 2017 at 11:15 AM ^
that he needs two years to re-vamp the offense, so we can't be expected to have a great year until 2019 at the earliest.

What would Dantonio do that Harbaugh won't. I'd like to say it's interesting to read your point of view on these many different topics, but I won't lie. It's not interesting at all, never is. Perhaps though, instead of simply detailing what's wrong with what Harbaugh is doing, you could give us a little insight as to how the great one in East Lansing whose biggest accomplishment toward a winning record vs. UM was stepping into the job at the right time would go about getting things done.
In other words, looking forward to anything you can offer that's outside the norm, which is always the same, useless and negative. And it's better to cheer on your own site than to be a distraction on the site of your superiors.

isn't in the same stratosphere as Kaep as a runner. Completely different offense.
I get your point that Harbaugh built his offense around Kaep which is somewhat different than Alex Smith but the core offense principle is still the same.

I was just thinking about all of the WR talent the team now has (assuming Van Jefferson comes as well). With Black, DPJ, Collins, and Martin all having a year under their belts, Perry being a known commodity, Crawford maybe picking it up with better QB play and Jefferson thrown into the mix as well...we could see some pretty awesome 5 wide packages if the coaching staff wants to take advantage. And in drooling over all the WR talent, I forgot about the TEs. Now let's just pray that the Oline allows us to have nice things.
December 8th, 2017 at 1:38 AM ^
Black, DPJ, Van Jefferson, Gentry, with an inline Mckeon and Evans coming out of the backfield. Give a man a little time and there will be yards. Lots of 'em.

We get Grant back and Cesar's likely C. The line will be fine.

There is a world of difference for Newsome from stepping on the pratice field, then actually going on the field, facing defensive lineman knowing it could happen again. Sometimes the mental recovery from injuries like that is more difficult than the physical.
December 8th, 2017 at 9:56 AM ^
I'm with you. Grant is apart of the team, however, I doubt he plays. I expect the OL to take a step forward with this line up:
Bushell-Beatty | Bredeson | Ruiz | Onwenu | (?) Runyan Jr. possibly?
The RT spot is going to be the battle in the beginning of the year. Maybe have some unbalanced sets with the TE's to offset that against ND.

Why stop with 5? I call for 10 wide packages. Send everyone out!

UMBIG11 noted that the kid is contemplating a transfer. I don't think you can blame him, either.
December 8th, 2017 at 8:51 AM ^
Well you have to do something to retain your "potential". A fresh start would work.
December 8th, 2017 at 9:45 AM ^
Good enough kid who did make a few WOW plays but his overall body of work will not cut it if he wants to continue starting or even getting a large amount of playing time at Michigan. Firm handshake and best of luck to him elsewhere should he choose to leave.
December 8th, 2017 at 1:56 PM ^
I was afraid our running game would take a step back with Chesson and Darboh leaving. They were the best blocking WRs we had had in years.

We heard about all last off season. I remember reading several times that Harbaugh was telling all of the WR recruits in the last class that Michigan would be switching to more of a 4/5 wide spread pass offense in the future. Along the lines of the Pats offense. One of the things that kept Nico in the class.
I think the idea intergrating spread elements into their game is what's best. Put athletes in space and let them work. Odds are you're not going up against a defense that has 11 NFL players on it.
December 8th, 2017 at 8:31 AM ^
Of the empty back field.
No reason for it.
And we were awful at it this year.
December 8th, 2017 at 10:01 AM ^
Part of the reason that didn't work is we didn't have the 11/11 pieces needed.
We might have had 7 of the 11 needed?
December 8th, 2017 at 1:17 AM ^
IF Shea beats out Dylan and Brandon for the job, then I can easily see Harbaugh running a Kaepernick 49ers-esque pistol offense with him.
I think that kind of style would suit the college game really well compared to what we have now, which apparently requires a star QB (Andrew Luck/Kevin Hogan caliber) to perform at an optimal level than what we've seen out of JOK, Speight and (present day) Peters.

I don't think Pep and Harbaugh will have an issue. Pep came in talking about passing spread sets and Harbaugh has shown himself to be nothing if not adaptable over his career.
Drevno on the other hand... who knows.
I'm more worried about getting a WR coach to continue coaching up our young talent.
December 8th, 2017 at 3:29 AM ^
Looks like current UM analyst Scott Turner (of That Turner family) is in line to be WR coach when we go to 10 coaches (January?) . He has serious NFL coaching chops for a young guy.

Could be somewhere Shea's brother fills in?
December 8th, 2017 at 9:47 AM ^
He was a QC staffer at LSU, support staff at Ole Miss. The NCAA changed the rules about hiring family members, so his brother can't hold a similar position here. He's a long ways from becoming a full fledged assistant at a top program.
December 8th, 2017 at 1:23 AM ^
There will probably be a few minor wrinkles but I think Harbaugh likes guys to run when nothing is open or the blocking breaks down only. We have been building towards power run for 3 years, I doubt we are going to go spread and zone read now.
December 8th, 2017 at 1:32 AM ^
This is basically what I would say. Harbaugh's definitely a guy with a core philosophy, but he's also a pragmatist - and a brilliant football mind. He's always got new wrinkles, something different to try, different modifications and so on. So from his core principles, he can develop a massive array of offensive options. Within that array, he'll choose the ones best suited to the personnel he has at any given time.

December 8th, 2017 at 7:31 AM ^
He's drawn comparisons to Manziel, who is a spread QB if there ever was one. I think he's the rare pocket passer that would be equally comfortable in just about any system (outside of teams like, say, Georgia Tech, who only nominally have a QB).
December 8th, 2017 at 7:53 AM ^
Most NFL teams run some form of a passing spread. They have have very few QBs that would not be called pocket QBs. Spread doesn't mean running the read option.

December 8th, 2017 at 1:30 AM ^
If the o-line shows that they can protect the QB, I expect our offense to throw more regardless of who is playing QB. They wanted to do that early this year and realized with this o-line, it's just not possible. But the line improved, and I'm cautiously optimistic that they will be at least average.
