Submitted by BoFlex on

John O'Korn will remain Michigan's starting QB vs. Rutgers, Jim Harbaugh says. Brandon Peters still backup.

Peters was an EE and redshirted. Even raw, he has been with the program for enough time to beat out someone with JOK season stats: 55.5% CMP%, 1 TD, 5 TO, 6.6 YPA. At what point is Peters expected to surpass that level of performance? And its not like JOK is passing the eye test.

I don't know the answer, but pretending that Peters not getting snaps isn't a bad thing seems like burying our heads in the sand.

thats a load of crap.

Concensus 4*, and a direct quote from his hello post . .

"Peters is regarded as one of the nation's better pro-style quarterbacks, placing in the top lists on every site except Scout."

Scout - "He makes quick reads, seems to understand defenses and where his receives will be and does not hold onto the ball too long."

ESPN - "He's smart pre-snap and understands defensive coverages. Gets the ball out quickly and accurately to his receivers."

247 - "we're ready to put him in the discussion among the nation's top passers."

Yep, a real project.

I don't know what happened to him or where the quarterback almost universally lauded has gone, but i hope he shows up someday soon.

that if you were at the Spring game, Peters was by far the best QB on the field that day.  Great arm and ran for a 20 yard TD.  I had a great view of the warmups last Saturday from my skybox (oh yeah - the Michigan section at PSU in the clouds), and Peters arm is just far better than any other QB on our roster.  His outs and deep throws just get to receivers faster and jsut as accurate ... he just needs game experience.

think O'Korn will get some good time to get more comfortable against Rutgers, Minnesota and Maryland (I think we will win all of them easily) and perform well against Wisconsin and OSU.  He played well for a lot of the first half this weekend and made some good throws and ran more effectively.  He was down 14-0 on the road in a snake pit before he could blink.  Penn State is just really good this year and played a great game.

If Michigan wins the next 3 comfortably, Wisco could be an intereting game considering their schedule leaves much to be desired.

I wouldn't get my hopes up much. I learned my lesson from Penn State.

of football to be played before the Wisconsin game.  I know that O'Korn got the bye week after Purdue, but then he got a hot plate of MSU at night in a monsoon, #ChaosTeam on the road, and a really good Penn State team coming off a bye week.  Not exactly what you need to ease your way in to things.  The offensive line issues are not going to be fixed overnight, but I think our offense will be playing much better and more consistently when we go to Madison.

I want you to tell me with all of the evidence we have, what makes you believe O'Korn will play well against OSU and Wisconsin? Both of whom are the two best defenses we will play.

think that Penn State pounced on us right away with explosive play-making that put us in a serious hole.  While the deficit proved too much to overcome, O'Korn lead two pretty impressive first half drives, made some pretty damn good throws, and started thinking a lot less.  He began to use his legs when plays were well covered, he probably did it a little too much, but I think he will get an opportunity get more comfortable with the receivers and the routes in the next few weeks against far inferior defenses that he has faced in the last three weeks.  It also gives our young recievers three more weeks to develop with their understanding of the offense without the lights shining on them as bright as they have been.  I also thought that our first down playcalling became more aggressive when the game was still within reach and that if that continues O'Korn will prove quite a bit more effective throwing on early downs.

Penn State blew it open in the fourth quarter on Saturday, but it was a 21-13 game at halftime and they played out of their minds.  I am not here to tell you that Saturday was good, by any means, but O'Korn brought the team back to basically tie the game right before halftime and made some really nice throws along the way.  That place was up for grabs and we had absolutely no momentum whatsoever.  I thought that feat was impressive enough on its own.

Yeah, O'Korn did the same thing he's always done, even on the touchdown drives. Stare down first read and throw if open. If not, run. Even his "impressive" throws people are referencing, if you watch his eyes he is staring down one receiver. O'Korn supporters have kind of touted this game as him playing well and showing growth. The fact of the matter is, he didn't hit 6 YPA, we didn't score in the second half and for the third straight week, we do not have a passing touchdown.

Dunking on Rutgers, Maryland, and Minnesota doesn't mean anything juxtaposed against OSU and Wisconsin, as evidence as last year. And with O'Korn under center I don't think we dunk on those three teams, in the air at least. May still run the ball well.

Great. Then why the fuck was he still in at 42-13 with a few minutes to go if there is that much of a gap between quarterbacks? How is that smart? How is that best for the team for this year?

our discussion above about Peters "not being ready."  I don't buy that narrative and I don't think the issue at the moment is ability.  I think there is something else at play.  Read a couple transcripts of press conferences where Harbaugh is addressing the Peters situation.  It is like he is all of the sudden not speaking English.  He says things like "progress is being made to happen with the backup QB situation."   Whatever is going on it is really unusual.

Correct. This isn't about ability like some are trying to make this out to be. In fact, Peters is the most talented quarterback on the roster and McCaffrey is next, both better than JOK and Speight from a talent standpoint. However, I believe and have been told something else is at play. It has nothing to do with him being "ready."

Peters should have been in last week's game in the 4th quarter. Period. And he should be either starting the Rutgers game or be getting at least multiple series. However, if I had to bet money on it, I would say he will be a transfer after the season or more specifically after the winter semester.

This isn’t much of a surprise based off of what that insider has been saying on these boards. Still think it’s early to write him off even though there are plenty of redshirt freshmen QBs playing. I do think Harbaugh knows QBs and if Peters isn’t ready he isn’t ready. It remains the case that the backup QB is the most popular player because he can’t possibly be worse than the starter right? Let’s let it play out. Next year assuming no injuries to the starter I hope we see competent QB play as Harbaugh will have two of his guys to play with in addition to possibly Speight. As another poster said maybe offense can get a comfortable enough lead to give Peters some snaps this game.

Harbaugh needs to ID his horse and start grooming him. Going year to year with a new QB is going to make winning a B1G title tough. Again....it's the lack of continuity that is coming into play. You have a lot coming back on offense next season and QB is the only unsettled position truly.

Your last sentence makes me cringe when considering the prospects for 2018 victories. If a patched up, duct taped Wilton Speight is all JH can trot out there as the starting QB in year 4 of the Harbaugh era, heaven help us.

Speight played really good last year before his injury.  He was also 3-0 this season before his injury with youth everywhere at WR and TE.  He was also learning some new aspects to the offense with Hamilton.  Losing Black, who had become easily his favorite target, was a tough break too.  He struggled to begin the game against Purdue but chances are he would have done enough to win that game.  I very seriously doubt we would have lost to State with Speight still playing.  PSU would have still beaten us but after playing them I am not sure PSU is going to lose until they play Alabama.

Threw not one, but two pick sixes against Florida. He sucks. Anyone that thinks WS is good is suffering from ptsd.

You doubt that we would've lost to MSU with Speight playing, but we may have lost to Purdue with Speight playing. I mean, O'Korn really changed that game around and was a hero for a moment. Speight was truly doing absolutely nothing during that Purdue game.

I wasn't expecting Peters to start against Rutgers. I would like to see him get in the game on a few consecutive (non-garbage time) drives.

Peters is a red shirt freshmen on a team that is 5-2. It might be a little early for transfer talk. Malzone is still on the team, fergodsakes.

I understand that Harbaugh is going to play the personnel that give us the best chance to win, and he sticks to that, but now it forces me to wonder just where is Peters developmentally if that person in his mind is John O'Korn? I know that there was a story from Balas that Peters may very well not be quite what folks thought he was, so I am actually finding myself wondering if there is some substance to that story.

Peters has the basic skill set to run a scaled-down version of Harbaugh's offense. He's listed as #2 now. I don't know how Peters is developing but I haven't seen multiple confirmations there is a problem other than inexperience. Maybe Harbaugh thinks O'Korn might break through whatever is going on with him and take it to the next level?
