Was this supposed to be only about our coaches?

I keep having this conversation with my friend. It is not all QB it is like death by 1000 cuts. When we do get protection no one is open. When we do get protection and someone is open we drop the ball. When we don't get protection... sack, holding, etc... Like most things in life the difference between playing football and being good at football is all in the details and we can't seem to put all the details together consistently, hopefully we are just young.

we should just keep running the ball no matter what then. maybe the outcome will e better.

Here's my honest evaluation. Drevno, Pep need to go. They both don't have a good track record and they've done nothing well this year. Jay Harbaugh needs to be demoted. We need REAL skill position coaches. Get the best WR and RB coaches you can find. Keep Jay on staff somewhere, because he can recruit. Frey, I believe, is the right man for the job. He has the track record and did more with less at Indy. Just need some more depth and experience on the line. This year was a rebuilding year. We are the youngest or one of the youngest teams in the NCAA. Changes need to be made, but I think this season is certaintly the exception and not the rule for Harbaugh's tenure.

If you do not have a QB, you have nothing. FSU, a BCS contender lost its 4th game because they are relegated to starting a true freshmen. Everyone is talking about coaches failing to coach or run the right play. If you do not have the player to comprehend what needs to be done everything turns to dust. The FSU fans are in the same mind set looking for their pounds of flesh and gallons of blood. They want everyone fired despite someone bringing in top5 recruting classes and has already won one NC. College football is fast becming like the NFL that the margin of error is tiny. Harbaugh only has two years of his players in since most of his first year were Hoke's recruits. I will make my decision on Harbahugh and his staff when it is his seniors all on the field not sophmores and redshirt freshmen.

Didn’t have an issue with the offensive gameplan in the first half. As we all knew, once we get behind we do not have the horses to get it done in the air.

Always thought JH teams overachieved and were tough, but not now. Youth is no excuse for this spanking.
October 21st, 2017 at 11:40 PM ^
Our young team got fooled and then taken out by a senior team in a hostile environment. Did you see lack of effort in Michigan? Because I didn't. They got their ass kicked by a team that executed their gameplan and plays extremely well in a highly partisan environment.
Maybe if Kaleke Hudson makes an incredible end zone pick the game changes. That was the play that nearly turned the outcome and it wasn't to be.
If you think this loss was worse than watching RichRod's teams play Penn State and lose or Hoke's team lose in OT to Bill O'Brien's pedo team, well then you don't respect good football and teams that on any given day make their case based on whatever drives that team. Michigan has had plenty of those Saturdays, and this just isn't one of them. But now it serves as a reminder of how success is fleeting.
October 22nd, 2017 at 12:04 AM ^
Yeah, like 13 years ago type of fleeting.

State did that as well.
Offenseive routes are either twenty yards downfield or FB flats. PSU installed a new wrinkle for barkley in two weeks. In two years Evans has yet to get the ball in space other than on tosses.
One time on third and long I just want to see an arm punt. One time.
I don't know if offense staff needs to be cleaned out but roles need to be simplified and clearly defined.

Our qbs do not get much pass protection from our running backs.
October 21st, 2017 at 11:29 PM ^
Honestly thought the offensive gameplan wasn't that bad in the first half. It was focused on the run and got O'Korn some easy completions/runs. But then they had some bad drops and the offense got bogged down.
The defense, I don't know why McCray was left on Barkley. This game looks different (though PSU still wins) if they switch that matchup to Bush.

team unity and desire. And we should have known based on what PSU did last year that this game would be there top priority. Any doubts about that?
College football is about emotion and passion. They wanted to score 60 on us. And we couldn't stop them. And we wouldn't back down from our style on defense. So they executed. Like when Kinnell went out of the game when his helmet came off, they spread the field, put Barkley in a one-on-one matchup against McCray with a backup safety in, and McSorley hit Barkley who juggles a TD catch.

I'm guessing they have some sort of automatic formation when a DB goes out?

I wondered the same thing about play action on 4th and 11...and wouldn't we want all the protection we could get? Nobody is buying into the run on 4th and 11.
October 21st, 2017 at 11:49 PM ^
What's up with Harbaugh? He looks flat on the sideline and the players look flat on the field. There is no fire on this team.
October 21st, 2017 at 11:54 PM ^
They changed the rule about coach behavior on the sideline specifically because of him and he's not pushing it. And that bullshit penalty in the OSU game last year.

I was kinda always blah blah blah about the offensive coaches. I admit, I still believe Harb can coach up the QB's but frankly all the other guys are underwhelming. I said all along that Ty Wheatley's impact on the running game would be felt. I couldn't be more honest, these guys need someone who really coaches RBs not a fill in guy. Not impressed with Pep or the Frey guy or Drevno. We should bring in Les Miles as the O Coordinator to make the offense more dynamic. He is a phenomenal recruiter, has a great offensive mind and would probably jump at the chance to retire here. The Offensive play calling is too conservative and is very limited in their looks. We have all seen this coming for weeks yet we were hoping something changed. It hasn't and we looked terrible.
Defensively we had a rough night as James Franklin and co. clearly did their homework and developed a gameplan to counter the #1 Don Brown defense. We got spanked and it shouldn't have been that bad. The Safeties and a couple of the LB's got torched on slants, mismatches and they failed to keep containment all night. The blitz was completely neutralized and D. Bush was turned into an average player because he was forced to play a different facet of the position (chasing runners who have broken containment because he has over pursued while blitzing). Confident the Defense will rebound. because Brown will tweek the D to overcome the problems but teams will all try to game plan their offense around our blitzing tendencies and neutralize D. Bush.

stop playing chris evans, especially in pass protection. Also, don't ever let McCray get stuck against a good runningback. Other than that it wasn't much worse than usual save the play action from under center on 4th and 11. All in all, it was pretty bad

October 22nd, 2017 at 12:24 AM ^
There was a play in the game at Purdue where he was chasing the play to the near sideline and I thought it was Solomon until I saw the #9 jersey.
McCray's another example of a graduating player behind whom there are several options with pedigree. Hurst's graduation will hurt, but Solomon will enter next season with experience. Winovich has played pretty well this year but there are some guys behind him who've shown some things.
But I'll disagree with your premise that this coaching staff is scared to play younger players. I think we just saw tonight an example of a senior badly outmatched in a game against this particular opponent and personnel. How the staff responds in their gameplan for OSU is worth keeping an eye on though.

I am more calm than most of you guys. I guess it's because this was for sure the least painful of the losses in the JH era.
We lost to the better team. No rivals, no fluke plays, no overtime, no refs, no "our team didn't show up and sucked randomly" bs that sends us raging. Just JH's second normal loss next to his very first game. Yes, we can improve, but we didn't look horrible, and the better team won this football game desrvingly. Also, the score doesn't tell the whole story of how this game felt. It didn't feel like we got blown out to me, it just felt like a loss. 2015 OSU was a blowout, that was a different animal than tonight's game.
Yes, our offensive coaches need to go. Yes, Don Brown was unfortunately outcoached tonight. But the notion that this team was unprepared is just untrue. Also, Don Brown will be fine and I am confident he will show improvement.
Anyone who is resting this loss on JH is insane. He does have some proving to do in the rest of this season, the offseason, and next year. But I am confident he will prove himself. Anyone who is even talking about his job status is somehow EVEN MORE mental than those who did following the MSU game. I would spend that energy concerned about how his lack of enthusiasm has shown up again tonight.
Basically, this season is playing out on paper the way we thought this young team would do. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see an improvement in division standings, which is the very first thing I wanted. As a result of that, this has become my mindset starting tonight for the remainder of our season:
Just beat ohio state.
All will be forgiven if that happens.
October 22nd, 2017 at 12:37 AM ^
We're not beating Ohio State. Just like we weren't beating Penn St. Was never going to happen. There was a lot of misplaced optimism here. I saw a LOT of people saying they had a good feeling Michigan would win. Next time, don't listen to that feeling because it was obviously way off. OSU will beat us again as completely shitty as that will be. Come back to reality here. There is a chance we lose to Minnesota still.

want Harbaught to stay and coach out his career at Michigan. 2019 and future years will be great for this program as long as Harbaugh remains our coach. But I worry this season may cause Harbaugh to take an NFL job at the end of the season. That's my biggest fear with losing and big blowouts.

October 22nd, 2017 at 1:08 AM ^
Jim gets a pass because we are in a different stratosphere than where our program was three years ago.
The fact we are responding like this after losing to the number two team in the country just shows how we have improved. Our expectations have risen, and that is because of the rebuilding job our coach has done. His honeymoon is over, and he is not free from criticism, but Jim Harbaugh did not lose us this game, and is in no way worthy of being talked about in a job-status conversation.
We are a young team, and our defense exceeded expectations, so they irrationally went up. Now we are disappointed when the result matches our original thoughts.
Also, who else would you want coaching this team? What is your better option? If you can find a better coach for this team than Jim Harbaugh, then I am more than intrigued. I want all of your details.
