Not great, Bob.

400+ yards - good! But Speight threw two horrible INTs (even the first one, which the WR should have caught, was a bad throw and he was looking for Tacopants a lot in the first half). And, more worrisomely, couldn't finish drives. Game should have been over long before it was.

But the second INT looked like Wilton was playing for UF. He missed a lot of wide-open WR. This may just occur through his career here. Peters is not ready yet and O'Korn is not any better than Wilton.

A more accurate throw would've been nice, yes. But if the receiver can get both hands on it like he did, it's accurate enough.
We'll see if it becomes an issue as time goes on. Benefit of the doubt today because win. Maybe Speight was a little too amped up.
September 2nd, 2017 at 9:36 PM ^
I have to think that if either of those two were in the same position that comes out as a catch. Crawford is a good-great blocker as a receiver, but his hands are not exactly outstanding...limited opportunities, but still.

TIMMMAAY's a troll, but you had a reasonable response. So I give you a reasonable response.
I agree, however...I'll never call a offense performance great if you give up 2 pick 6's and get stalled as much as we did forcing FG's.
Plus the nauseating miss by Speight that was a walk in TD.
...yards looked good, but it was not a great preformance by any stretch in my eyes. And if we put up that offensive performance versus PSU, Wisky or OSU...IMO, we get beat.
It didn't say it was bad. I said it was not great. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.
September 2nd, 2017 at 8:02 PM ^
I'll take TIMMMMAAY's trolling over your bipolar overconfidence to internet policing back and forth any day. Plus you say Wisky which is extremely annoying, especially with a K when there is no K in Wisconsin.

We put up almost 450 yards of offense, in the first game of the season, against a ranked team. After replacing almost everyone. It was fine.
September 2nd, 2017 at 7:20 PM ^
It was fine.
It wasn't great.
Besides, the comment is a joke...check the defensive snowflakes thread.

If you'd told me before the game that we'd have 200+ rush yards vs FL I'd have been very happy with that.
The offense did a great job sustaining drives, picking up 3rd downs, keeping FL's D on the field and wearing them down. Also, keeping our D good and fresh.
September 2nd, 2017 at 8:09 PM ^
The offense was fine today, I agree with that. And maybe that's good enough against a formidable defense in Florida. But there were too many mistakes, some smallish and some egregious, to say anything better than "fine" or "ok" or "good enough".
September 2nd, 2017 at 8:54 PM ^
True, they actually left a lot of points and yards on the board. But "good enough" against Florida, is actually pretty good.

pretty sure the coaches feel the same way. im sure theyre thrilled to win the game, especially in that situation vs a decent team and all that. theyre prob pleased with certain aspects and players but realize they need to improve in most areas to achieve their ultimate goals (winning conference road games, beating osu, competing in playoff, etc)

Are you sure? His ints weren't particularly difficult throws - just inaccurate passes.
To me, there were 2 really good passes that stood out
1) O'Korn down the sideline to Black
2) Speight downfield to Eubanks

This is going to be the weirdest observation (unless it's somewhere else in the threads--I'm a little late to all of the discussions), but at one point they showed Speight in the huddle and I noticed that his neck was bright red. Were they practicing outside in the Dallas sun? Did no one think to put sunscreen on the starting QBs neck? I'm sure that explains the spotty performance. Rub a little aloe on there and things will get a lot better.

If you're going to miss, miss out of bounds.

Trying to apply that cliche to the analysis of Speight's play today is some lazy bullshit (unless it's sarcastic and I'm not reading it as such.)
If trying to fit a ball into a tight spot, yes, if you're going to miss, miss out of bounds.
But you don't TRY to miss out of bounds, and three times today, Speight had a potential TD pass but he threw the ball out of bounds. (Crawford caught one in the end zone out of bounds in the 3rd quarter, then he did it twice in the 4th, including the incomprehensible overthrow of Peoples-Jones).
I think it's undeniable truth that 1) Speight gives Michigan the best chance to win and 2) He has to play much better for Michigan to get to where they want to go.
September 2nd, 2017 at 10:30 PM ^
Sp8s got that tecnique down-right mastered.
September 2nd, 2017 at 7:28 PM ^
They will cost us in the big games at the end of the season. I think he will always over throw those 30 to 40 yard passes. I'm not sure if his accuracy can be improved, may have to go to more short throws but that is when he throws INTs. Hopefully he can avoid the turn overs and play more like Brian did in '97. Because we will have a great defense by years end.

Still? It's been 32 months with Harbaugh for him. He's not going to get better. What you see is what we have with him.

just like Tom Brady
and John Navarre
when they were in their 1st starts as RS Jrs.
September 2nd, 2017 at 7:24 PM ^
Speight hit two deep balls. He wasn't great today but he will get better as we go. That is the best defense we will face until after Thanksgiving.
September 2nd, 2017 at 7:30 PM ^
Maybe he'll appear better against lesser competition, but when we go against PSU, Wisconsin and Ohio State, he will absolutely have to play better or we will have a hard time winning those games.
To me, he or O'Korn don't look that much different than last year. Small 2017 season sample size applies but their issues were back in this game.
O'Korn hit a nice pass down the sideline but did not look comfortable in the pocket.
Speight is inaccurate/inconsistent.
Whoever starts needs to get better.
September 2nd, 2017 at 8:30 PM ^
That, really, is the only reason I'd voice any criticism at all. The team absolutely dictated everything that happened in the game today. It wasn't close at all, despite trailing at the half. Still, after the way last season ended it isn't comforting to see last years problems still hanging around.
September 2nd, 2017 at 8:49 PM ^
Darboh, Chesson, and Butt are all gone. I'm not exactly excited by the performances by our QBs but give it a few games for them to establish some connection with . Speight had two really nice deep passes that would have graded out better than anything that he threw last year before the bye week

I think there were most definitely some nerves and FL is going to win some games with their D alone. The next few games should give Speight and the receivers some time to get coordinated and in synch hopefully.
This is a young team and some of the reality is that they just need to get their timing and team play together...kinda a big stage for some of those guys being young, on the road and in JerryWorld for their first starts on the big stage against a team that should contend in the SEC east this year.
The key is getting all cylinders hitting by PSU on offense, the Defense is already showing they are at least as good as last year and will only get better especially as the D backs continue to develop.

Michigan wins despite of Speights deficiencies and weaknesses. Our running backs looked very fast and physical. The wide receivers seemed to be running solid routes. But man, if order for us to win a big ten championship, speight needs to improve.
September 2nd, 2017 at 7:22 PM ^
Speight is who he is at this point. Some better pass pro and he should look better. But it's not like he's gonna get any better than he is now.
