[LOCKED] Peppers kneels during national anthem

Submitted by bleeker on

Per ESPN: http://es.pn/2imwV4m Tough, smart player with great situational awareness.

MOD EDIT - Left it overnight so people could get it out of their system. Went about as well as you would think - LSA

I'm confused. Are you saying that players should stop bringing attention to racial inequity? I would say even if you are tired of the topic of players bringing attention to racial inequity, this is certainily a new facet to said discussion, having been adopted by a recent Michigan grad.

Maybe I'm confused by your displeasure?

Is a false narrative. There is no systemic racism in the USA against minorities. Period. There are individual racists but nothing systemic. In fact, affirmative action has systemically propted up less qualified minorities while discriminating against whites because of the color of their skin. This is wrong. Can we all agree it's wrong to discriminate against someone because of their skin color?

Racial profiling by police has been "systemic" for decades. Do you think the Rodney King beating would have happened to a white guy in Simi Valley? And this problem still exists and is widespread, hence the BLM movement. You, sir, have drunk the Kool Aid of right wing apologists and closed your eyes to reality.

Oh, indeed. This is going to be everything you ask for when you're a few pints into your evening and you're actually supposed to occasionally moderate the board. I am so happy that threads like this come around that time where I start thinking that maybe I should consider bed in the near future....

Another Guinness it is.

I'm so tired of people being concerned about how others non-violently/silently express themselves.

Also Peppers was 1 of 11 on this team and a number of other guys supported them (white and black players).

I'm sorry for being ornery, I just don't feel like we need a play-by-play update everytime someone doesn't stand for the Anthem. How you feel about it is how you feel about it - maybe work on getting past how you feel about it and work on the "why" versus the "what."

Get ready...because there are 100 players on this Michigan Football team. Don't be surprised when you see some of your own players in winged helmets kneeling, locking arms, fists in the air, etc. - it's coming.

Abso-fucking-lutely you do!

As long as you disagree in a respectful (objective term - because many feel disrespected by their form of protest...but that's not really the point in this post) and peaceful manner, more power to you. That's #MURICA in a nutshell.

If you don't believe that is happening then you are being willfully ignorant. On top of the endless stories around the world, both myself and close friends have negative interactions with cops with no illegal activity involved. Including one friend who lost his job, apartment, car, and fiancee' because he didn't have bail money and had to wait 16 months just for his case to be thrown out when is was proved that the police planted the evidence. Cop got suspended for 1 month with pay

In your world, is it possible for people to simply protest the disproportionate number of black boys and men killed by the police? have you heard of tamir rice? Is it possible to protest the higher statistical likelihood of being violated by the police or getting a harsher sentence in court based on color of skin? Are you mad at the protesters or the empirical evidence?

I personally thought the circle was a pretty unified way of doing this kind of thing. That being said, I think what Carr and Mack did made more of a statement

Which is fine, and I respect your opinion.

But my personal thought is...why is everyone so hung up on how they're actually doing it - let's talk (not on MGoBlog) about WHY they're doing it and how we can address their concerns/issues/etc. in a positive manner.

The fact that some folks are still talking about the proper "act" is soooo crazy to me. Well if you stand and look down it's okay, but if you kneel it's wrong. If you turn your back to it, it's disrespectful, but if you close your eyes and ignore the words...it's fine.

It's funny...I'd bet if I polled America I'd find more variations of the proper way to protest the Anthem than opinions on what they're actually protesting. Yet we're hung up on the part that isn't actually hurting anyone and we're honestly never going to agree on. Meanwhile, generally speaking...these guys (black and white) are all "protesting" the same things. It's not a secret, it's not even really a debate.

It's just kind of strange when you think about it.

I'll put it this way...when we play Florida, I don't give a damn how we score. I just want Michigan putting the ball in the endzone and the W. Yes, that's a simplistic view...but it's just the point of let's not lose focus of the point...how we get there is a less important conversation (in my mind).

When Michigan is blowing everyone out and winning every game...then I'll worry about how we're doing it. When we have racial equality in this country...then I'll worry about how people silently/non-violently protest. That's when I'll feel like I can be picky. In the meantime, I'm not really worried about it. Just me though.

I'm Afro America and lived in a small racist town in NC . I got pulled over 13 times in a 18 month time frame for non moving violations. Each time they just wanted to check me out and see what I was doing . One time they followed me home and had 8 cop cars blue light me in front of my neighbors after they followed me for a mile . They said I made an illegal uturn . I had on a suit and had a suit hanging in my backseat for work they next day. They wanted to search my car for drugs and I told them I didn't have time for that because it was already late and I was going out of town to check on my mother . I explained to them it was a 2 1/2 hour drive and asked if they could just call the K-9 unit because I never even puffed a cigarette so I definitely didn't have any drugs . They huddled up for 30 mins and then asked if they could search my car for a large sum of currency. I explained to them I'm a social worker for the county there's no way I could have a large sum of currency . They huddled for 15 more mins and then finally released me to go after having detained for over An hour. No ticket as always ! I made no illegal uturn I just drove at night while being black. I've never been to jail . I don't sag my pants. I don't do drugs. I'm educated and work with teens with disabilities. Coach pop warner football. A veteran of the US Navy ,but that means nothing to some police if you're black. The guy who wrote the anthem was a slave owner and actually wrote the anthem as a poem. He was angry that some slaves fought with the British because they promised them their freedom if they won or fought with them. He thought that this was unpatriotic. He wrote it after America won a battle over the British and the verse that was omitted celebrated those slaves being killed with the Brits . I stand for the anthem , but I would be lying if I said I'm not somewhat conflicted after finding out the truth behind it. I have no problem with anyone who doesn't stand for it. I served and will serve again to make sure all the citizens of this country have equal rights.

You realize a lot of these guys do both? The reason they are motivated to do this publicly and take shit from retrograde white people is because they care about their communities enough to already be lending their time and money.

I swear to God if you break the Nolan Ulizio record tonight I am going to virtual junk punch you.

...you won't because this thread doesn't say Sam Webb, UMbig11, or Aquaman in the title. But you seem like you're trying and that's not cool.

I'm good with freedom of speech. My issue is why against the national anthem? I get there is bad cops but we also amazing cops too. So the other question is why not go to the inner cities and help there. We have a lot of crime, homicide, drugs.
