Very OT: What are the lamest sports moments/feats that other fanbases think are huge?
Since we're in the slowest part of the year, I was thinking back to a conversation with some Rutgers fans where they kept talking about "the Upset", as if I was supposed to know what that was. When I finally asked, they were referring to when they beat us in 2014 during the Brady Hoke farewell/GTFO tour. They legitimately acted as if this was a big deal and talked about how it was a wakeup call to all the Big Ten that Rutgers was for real. There was even a big banner this past season on the side of the arena commemorating it.
It made me proud to root for a team that has actual accomplishments that people outside of the fanbase are actually aware of.
Any other stories of lame accomplishments?
They don't play year-round. He had half the year off anyways.
Yeah, training and all that. But he's not going non-stop.
Yeah, the fact that it was a record suggests, well, it's not super easy or common. Another way to think about it: if it was such an easy feat, and one that brought with it such recognition, why wouldn't some other player have exceeded it? I don't know who currently has the longest active streak, but a quick Google search shows that as of last June it was Matt Duffy, with 188 consecutive games played.
in which he played from 1983 to 1998.
There really was not much DHing or PHing going on, to keep the streak alive. Ripken, in fact, never hit as a DH in any year between 1982 and 1999.
Now, if you want a conspiracy theory as regards the Orioles keeping Ripken's streak alive ---- google search "Kevin Costner Cal Ripken power outage."
It is VERY fortunate that he did not run into any injuries that prevented him to miss time.
Is that more of a Cal Ripken feat? Or is that more of good fortune combined with the way his overall body is structured?
I thought you'd get blasted for this one. The streak was impressive enough, but we had to endure the "Ripken as SS GOAT" proclamations until he retired. I couldn't get onboard with that.
I wouldnt have traded Trammel for him straight up.
They make it seem like this is such a difficult thing to do, yet I'll bet any college marching band can do it. Michigan gave them the idea, too.
"I WONDER WHO'LL WE GET TO DOT THE EYE TODAY?!?!??!!!! WOOOOOO BUCKS!!!"
Cant they grab some truck drivers out of the crowd and script the "State" ? That might be impressive. And avoid some confusion.
I stopped reading after you said "had a conversation with Rutgers fans"
In regards to those Rutgers fans you talked to. Yes, the team was playing like a dumpster fire. Yes, the team was coached by Hoke. Yes, we played so awful that it didn't take away any of the digusting feeling I had from watching....BUT....
Do those Rutgers fans not remember Darboh being robbed of the first down catch in the final minute? Again, that game was a disgrace and we sucked. But even with all the issues the team had and how awful we looked, the refs still sort of handed them the game at the end. I guess that little fact escapes them.
The six straight appearences in the ECF never impressed me as a Pistons fan.
Typically, they beat up a pretty lousy 7 or 8 seed and then had to win one challenging series. After that, they were there.
That's fine and all to not be impressed, but isn't that the experience of basically EVERY 1 or 2 seed in the playoffs?
That just basically affirms my point...
It's not impressive when the 1 or 2 seed goes to the ECF. I always hear about how big time the 6 straight ECFs is.
I am MUCH more impressed they went to back to back finals. That is the part of the run that is better IMO.
I am actually more impressed by them being the 1 and 2 seed all that time (entire regular season of work), and making it to back to back finals.
Getting to the ECF is okay.
National Championship. It was the first year of the playoff, so it really doesn't count. It's similar in my eyes to getting a mulligan on the first hole of a round of golf. It doesn't count, and nobody should acknowledge that it happened.
That Michigan didn't win in 2015. I'd want that bad boy to actually count.
making the NCAA Tourney
This is def one for me. Congrats, you finally did something every other team in a major conference has done before. Have a cookie.
The Eastern Conference has been not just bad, but really bad. LeBron has been far and away the best player in the NBA playing on the best and most talented team in the East each of those years. Just not impressed.
but I'm pretty sure that girl could probably kick your ass in any athletic competion.
Mine too.
So could virtually every other athlete mentioned in this thread, but then that wasn't the point of the OP's question, was it.
A streak of some sort related to NASCAR.
Stanford/Cal - I really don't get it.
I mean it was two teams fighting to get to around .500 that year.
It was a great play with a great twist with a great call. College football isn't just about teams that are 11-0 and 10-1.
it kind of is now. I agree it wasn't always that way but I think you will really start to see 3 and 4 loss teams "mail it in" at the end of the year now. Yes, I think even Michigan or OSU could see this happen when there are no playoff implications. The playoff was a very good thing in some ways and a very bad thing in others. You never saw players "opt" out of playing bowl games before the Playoff, not even during the BCS era. I think it has already eroded the bowl games significantly and I think that erosion will carry over the regular season soon.
There may come a time when fans genuinely wish the playoff would go away. (or expand, but not stay with 4 teams, that is just not enough to keep everybody interested). I think there are some unintended consequences that are going to be start to be really noticeable.

+1
I've always thought it was kind of lame because the play should have been blown dead when Dwight Garner's knee pretty clearly hit the ground. That play gets overturned today with instant replay. If I was a Stanford fan and a Cal fan brought that up, I would treat it like I treat the OSU game last year. Yeah, you "won", but...not really.

I would argue Jordan's "The Shot" on Craig Ehlo is made out to be more of a huge deal than it was. Maybe it announced what was to come in terms of Jordan/Bulls dominance, but it was a first round playoff series and they didn't win the championship that year.
I guess I think anything with a "The ______" moniker should be way more consequential.

Agreed.
Though I think plays like that and "the Catch" are really more about the iconic clip than the actual act. Like that Jordan shot, you don't really see the camera aligned like that very often. And then he does that fist pump. It's a very good clip and makes for a memorable highlight. But not a very special play.
"The Shot" is not a special play??? At that point, Jordan had won only one playoff series I believe, he fought off 2 defenders to get the inbounds, then hit a double-pump 18 foot jumper on the road. Not to mention, the Bulls were down, so if he misses they lose the series. I get that they did not win the title that year, but what constitutes a special play then?
time he did it.....
No seriously, Jordan did that so much that any one particular play seems routine.
