Play Cesar Ruiz at backup OG for a year in Dawson's spot.

I remember him being one of the oline recruits of 2013 that I was the most excited about. Unfortunate it did not work out for him. Wish him the best wherever he goes.

I'm darkly looking forward to an MGoBlog-produced "30 for 30: Michigan's 2013 offensive line class."

Except instead of "30 For 30", they'd need to call it "Zero For Six", unless Kugler ends up making an impact this fall. And at Michigan.

Another former lineman, albeit from the DL, who grad transfered to Western (Richard Ash) is now a Dallas Cowboy and on the fast track to the Super Bowl.

So hard to project OL production based on recruiting. I thought Dawson had a lot of potential for playing time here.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:10 PM ^
Not a good development for 2017 OLI would imagine this is a mutual decision and not something catching the staff off-guard.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:14 PM ^
I imagine the coaching staff let him know he wasn't going to be getting a 5th year and thus the decision for Dawson became obvious, I wish him well unless he somehow plays us.

I dunno, after watching three 5th year seniors getting abused over the weekend, maybe he thought he could develope better at another institution.

He could not get the field his entire time here.

Yup, he's got a coaching staff full of NFL coaches and a head coach who made a name for himself developing a nasty O-Line at Stanford. But because the o-line unit he wasn't good enough to crack had a bad game he probably thinks he's better off at a MAC school or something.

Wait a second, on what game data do you base that statement, because unless I have missed something, Dawson hasn't seen the field much at all, and disparaging a staff laden with NFL experience that has already shown in can develop players and maximize the talent that it has just seems.....not smart, if you don't mind me mentioning it.
January 1st, 2017 at 6:21 PM ^
According to MGoBlue, he has played in 12 career games.

Redshirts are usually great. They give the coaching staff the option of keeping a kid or wishing him depending on who he figures into future plans. You get a 22 year old 5th year performance instead of an 18 year old 1st year performance. And pretty much everyone who redshirts isn't going to play anyway so it's not like you sit a guy who was going to be a difference maker. Clearly based on this year's redshirt bonfire, if you can contribute, you're gonna play.

That's part of the reason they're so good.
They're not running out a bunch of true freshmen.
January 1st, 2017 at 10:06 PM ^
not many, but they have in the past few years
talent plays
January 2nd, 2017 at 9:58 AM ^
Mason Cole for example. Ben Bredeson is another! lol
What are you talking about? Michigan does the same thing. That doesn't make a good program.
Go check the numbers...this is some myth that Bama doesn't redshirt guy. Look it up first before you spew it as fact my man.

I said when he was recruited that I didn't think he had great talent, and he wasn't particularly nasty as a blocker. When he got on the field at Michigan, he looked overmatched. I don't think he would help us next year, and I already think some of the young guys like Runyan and Ulizio look more promising.
Hopefully he finds success elsewhere. He's had a rough life.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:18 PM ^
but with OL it's hard to project. We all though Kalis was the second coming of Jake Long. Not trying to be a dick, just saying you probably whiff on a lot of your projections too...just like Scout, Rivals, 247, etc. Hell, coaches whiff all the time too, and their careers are based on getting this stuff right.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:21 PM ^
I would have preferred Kalis becoming the second coming of Steve Hutchinson (both guards) than Jake Long (left tackle). But now I just picking nits.

potential? I know he is a smart kid with a mean streak. . .
January 1st, 2017 at 5:30 PM ^
I liked what I saw of him in the spring more than I liked what I saw from Dawson over the years. I've also heard the coaches like Ulizio. I don't think he's quite ready yet, but as an upperclassman, I think he has a chance to be pretty good.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:34 PM ^
recruiting blue chip O-line guys. I don't get it. Harbaugh and Drevno's record at Stanford speaks for itself. Ruiz was a big get, but I really thought guys would be lining up to play for this staff.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:41 PM ^
There are, of course, the theories that Michigan doesn't play dirty like some other schools. I don't know if I buy into that or not.
The one thing that stands out to me is that Harbaugh stresses competition. A lot of these guys want to be promised early playing time. They don't want to spend a couple years losing weight, adding weight, working out, learning the playbook, and standing on the sideline. Harbaugh tells them all they'll have to compete, and that rubs some guys the wrong way. For Cesar Ruiz he probably sees a chance to play immediately (if Cole moves back to LT) or at least by 2018 (after Cole graduates). At the other positions, you're trying to elbow your way to the front of the line with a gaggle of guards and tackles.
January 1st, 2017 at 6:14 PM ^
this doesn't seem to be keeping Bama from landing a full O-line of 4 and 5 stars every year. OSU also seems to have no issues.
For that reason, I do think certain programs have a bit more to "offer" than UM. Auburn, Clemson, Bama, OSU, Ole Miss - I've seen a lot of smoke over the years to assume it's not all above board.

that someone has to start after all that "competition", and that the players coming out on top still aren't all that good.

No slight to his game and hard work, I'm sure he'll be successful wherever he ends up, but he was MVP of that video.
