Michigan #3 in the AP Poll, still #4 in Coaches

Submitted by pfholland on
Michigan is up to #3 in the AP poll, and is the only team besides Alabama with a first place vote. Wisconsin only fell to #10, so the Big Ten still has four top ten teams.

In the Coaches poll we're still #4, only 19 points behind Clemson. Wisconsin stayed at #10 despite losing to OSU.

A one-loss Michigan team that did not win its conference is going to need help in the form of some 2-loss conference champions competing for that 4th spot.

It could realistically happen in the Bgi 12 and Pac 12.

It is interesting to see how the CFP has impacted the way the coaches and AP voters rank teams... it seems like they are ranking the best teams in the SEC, B1G, ACC and Pac-12 in the top 5 week in and week out. We are the spare team because the pollsters know we will likely be undefeated when we play OSU and the loser will simply fall to 5 while the winner will be #2. It's a total change in dynamics.

If we lose to Iowa but win out, we're in.

Getting to Indy and getting that extra game to play ourselves into the playoff does not bear on whether or not we lose to Iowa. But we'd probably be the 4 seed.

In that situation, assuming Clemson and Washington won out, I'd say your Final Four are 1) Alabama, 2) Washington, 3) Clemson, 4) Michigan

And Clemson would be in too...

I don't see your point.

...think about it.

SEC Champ - IN

ACC Champ - IN

B1G Champ - IN

Undefeated Washington - IN

Clemson losing does nothing to change that situation except for ranking those 4 teams.

If we lost to Iowa and went to win the B1G...there is a 100% chance we'd be in over a Louisville. So they're no threat.

Houston has already lost...so the only threat in this situation is undefeated Baylor. And we'd still be in over an undefeated Baylor if we go 12-1 with a B1G Championship.

Unless I'm missing something, you have nothing to worry about if we win a B1G Championship with a 0 or 1 in the loss column.

...now if we don't win a B1G Championship...then we've got problems.

The only poll that really matters is the one at the end of the season, but I still don't know how you could put Clemson above Michigan and Washington after needing a miracle missed field goal to be NC State.

Meaning every game played for teams 1-8 is basically do or die. Teams 9-12 have an outside chance but now rely heavily on uncontrollable situations. Agreed Clemson won on a gift and hasn't looked that great but the system rewards winning by any means necessary. Lose any later in the season from this point on and you're going to need some help. Although it's not so far fetched that if we ran the table and dominated our schedule up to OSU, play a fairly close game i.e within 3 points and lose, that the playoff committee might have a hard time selecting someone else better. Very 2006-ish.

Meaning that I would not be surprised if Saban voted another team as number 1 besides Alabama.  He would continue telling the team they are not good enough and would vote to reflect that (even if every other voter had Bama, he would tell them they weren't good enough to make it unanimous).

Dabo would probably vote for Clemson to prove that he believes the team will go all the way.

The pollsters do the right thing and move Michigan ahead of Clemson. I would have put Washington ahead of Clemson also.
