Houston Cougars Schedule
Some polls have Houston ranked above Michigan. How are suppose to pass them with this pathetic schedule?
9/10 Lamar
9/15 @ Cinci
9/24 TX St.
9/29 UConn
10/8 @ Navy
10/15 Tulsa
10/22 @SMU
10/29 UCF
11/12 Tulane
11/17 Lvlle
11/25 @Memphis
I'd feel a lot better if they added Cass Tech.

Not to worry, the Midshipmen will knock them out of playoff contention in Annapolis.

You may be giving way to much credit to those Seamen. That is their name, right? The Navy Seamen??

Not to worry yet. Me thinks the OP is way out over his skis in just the 2nd week.

We need the Fighting Petrino's to take them out or for OSU to beat OU.

An undefeated Houston (while still unlikely that they go undefeated) will not keep Michigan out of the playoff. Not winning the conference and/or losing two or more games will be the only thing that keeps us out.

I just want to revisit this comment...

Ole Miss lost in Memphis last season; Houston can't sleep on them.

Yep.
Winning will solve it. If we win out - 13-0 - I don't see Houston getting into the playoffs above us. Especially as Oklahoma quite possibly could have 3 or 4 losses by the end of the regular season taking the luster off of that win.

They don't put up 60+ points against every opponent they should.
They stumble/look bad against a good Louisville team.
We win the B1G Championship game to cap an undefeated regular season.

You have done it more than a couple times that I have noticed, and I noticed this one too. You aren't fooling anyone, wd.

You managed to get 2 downvotes and an upvote from me in the same string...essentially by saying the same thing 3 times. Well done.

You're so cool.

I know.
September 7th, 2016 at 4:59 PM ^
The only reason we'd need to pass them is if we were one of 5 unbeaten teams. And the only way that happens is if each conference has an unbeaten team coming out of it. And frankly, the only reason that even matters is if WE are also undefeated, in which case our resume would be way better.
So I say this without irony, but: shouldn't we wait to talk about this until we beat MSU and OSU?

If we are Big Ten champions and have the same record as them, we are in. Our SOS is not great, but it's way better then theirs. And it's backloaded, so our big wins - i.e. Ohio State - will be top of mind.
If they are undefeated and we have 1 loss and it's between them and us, we are in trouble. There will be tremendous pressure to put an undefeated G5 team in the CFP for political correctness reasons Politics should not matter but it's naive to think they don't.
An undefeated Houston is not a good thing for us.
September 7th, 2016 at 6:43 PM ^
I'm all for as much chaos and controversy as possible with regard to the CFP. Every year. That's the fastest way to an 8 team format. Just hope we don't get the short end of it one of these years until then. In a CFP, you shouldn't have to decide between an undefeated Houston and a 1-loss B1G champ. I can't believe the number of people who think 4 teams is proper (not saying you M-Dog).
OSU needs to spank OU coming up. Deflate Houston's big win a bit.
September 7th, 2016 at 8:46 PM ^
I agree. Eight is the sweet spot for the Playoff.
You get all 5 P5 champions plus 2 worthy At-Large's. I would reserve the eighth spot for the top G5 team for "fairness" reasons. Everybody gets a shot.
You could possibly make the case to put a cap on the number of losses, so that a 3 or 4 loss conference champion does not get in.

Realistically Michigan is the team that drives these changes. Michigan has to lead the country in changes to NCAA rules.
September 7th, 2016 at 5:05 PM ^
Rephrase: Shouldn't we wait to talk about this until Houston is actually ranked higher than us in a poll?

they might get in over is OU who they would have a head-to-head win over. Even though OU will have played a much more difficult schedule overall, it'd be tough politically for the committee to leave out Houston with one fewer loss and a head to head win.
But I agree that we have nothing to worry about other than winning the B1G with one or zero losses.
September 7th, 2016 at 6:01 PM ^
I don't think so, and I don't think the playoff committee would think so either. Houston's only change is to go undefeated, and for at least 2 of the power conference champions to have 2 or more losses. And even then it still might not be enough.
September 7th, 2016 at 7:19 PM ^
Yes. They won't "deserve" it, but I fear they will get it.

With a tip of the cap to Mad Hatter, this above might be the single most all-around appropriate use of this particular board meme to date. Well done indeed.
Granted, I only say that because this particular usage might have made me laugh the hardest.

sounds about right.
not really related to OPs question but houston has been impressive. their conference is weak but similar to boise st, they can only concentrate on beating whoevers scheduled - and then ball out if / when they get a shot vs a top program (which theyve done).
herman is obviously a great coach and theyve had some legit talent down there - there are plenty of athletes left over after the big boys cherry pick texas and that staff certainly knows how to deploy it. houston hit a home run with herman (and DC orlando), itll be interesting to see how long they can keep him.
that thurs night vs lville should be a ball game
September 7th, 2016 at 6:03 PM ^
If Houston can get into the Big 12, then they should be able to keep Herman.
