OT: Coach K dispenses wisdom to Oregon player
If you watched the tourney games last night you may be aware that this went down:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/25…
Was shooting a three-pointer with nine seconds left (and the outcome not in doubt) poor form? Probably. But, if I'm Coach K I leave any etiquette lessons to the Oregon coach.

Izzo really is the king of excuses. He has it down to a science, where he will sneak a whole bunch of excuses into a sentence about not making excuses, all while backhandedly complimenting the opponent.
His interview before the 2nd half when he threw the whole group of his kids under the bus was pretty disturbing. The reporter asked a followup about changes they may make and he emphasized, "It's not X's and O's" as if to say that his greatness is too much for that team to comprehend.
He actually gave the halftime interview? When did he stop pretending he was too good for that? For years he would be the only coach sending an assistant to give the interview.

"Well, we just need to remember to execute on both sides of the ball and play hard."
"Okay, thanks coach, good luck."
-_- Has there ever been a halftime interview that didn't follow this exact template?

That would be a good question for the player who was asked how his team got outrebounded.

Came here to say the same thing.
Fuck Duke.
March 25th, 2016 at 10:07 AM ^
I hate piling on. There are two exceptions. The first is when the 2nd or 3rd string is in, and the scrubs actually score, sometimes their only points in the tourney (or game, etc.). The second is when you are a long time natural rival, and you don't care that what goes around, comes around (Woody scenario). I would be happy to see Michigan beat OSU 42 - 13 or worse next year. As to Duke - Oregon, maybe it was a shot that just happened to go in. But man, I'd try to avoid taking shots at that point in the game, when the outcome is a foregone conclusion.
I'm no fan of Duke, or Coach K. But I don't fault Coach K for something said in private, nor do I fault the kid for not wanting to embrace at the end of the game. A handshake is one thing, but that embrace was over the top, imhe. Crean was a jerk with what he said to Coach Jeff Meyer after beating Michigan a couple years back. But this was just a bit of private friendly advice. It'd be like Kyle Connor and the CCM line pouring it on in the last minute when they're winning 6 - 2. Don't do it.
There are a lot of sore losers out there. I don't think that Coach K (or Izzo) are usually among them. Grayson Allen? Borderline sore loser. Still don't think he needs to embrace. Cam Newton losing the Superbowl? Now there's a jerk sore loser. And that's gonna hang around his neck. I've never been a big Cam Newton fan, and his behavior was just the icing on the cake. I think Lebron can be a sore loser sometimes. People will be watching to see how Stephen Curry responds if the Spurs knock them out.

is just not realistic. In this circumstance, EVERYBODY shoots the ball. There is no reason to let the shotclock run out and just stretch the game out with an unnecessary whistle and turnover. He took what amount to a half-courter just to avoid that. I don't think he thought there was that great of a chance the shot was going in. Only Dook and Mick D-arnta-nia could find disrespect here.
March 25th, 2016 at 10:54 AM ^
Or...they could have tried to guard him until the clock ran out. Shooting a near half court shot with the shot clock running out is not exactly piling on but even if it is, Coach K is the wrong messenger in that case. Let others talk about it if he is so concerned about winning or losing with class.

and called out "Meadowlark Lemon" while taking it.
March 25th, 2016 at 11:03 AM ^
Both Coack K and Allen are now officially complete sore losers. Period. That was pathetic.
March 25th, 2016 at 11:46 AM ^
Totally pathetic. Big time sore losers. Not as bad as the Pistons after they lost to the Bulls. That was probably the biggest bitch move I have ever seen in sports. Made me lose all respect for the Pistons after that, and I hated the Bulls.
Don't rag on the Pistons. No one complains about when the Celtics did the same thing. The Bulls and Pistons hated each other. Not to mention the rule changes due to Jordan whining about the Piston's style of play not being good for the NBA had a large part in the shift in the rivalry and that series loss.
I may be on the exact opposite side of you on every player/coach you mentioned.
You're worried about Curry, but just borderline on Allen--and okay with K and Izzo. Wow.
March 25th, 2016 at 10:14 AM ^
So the story is that Dillon was getting lessons on how to be classy from Grayson Allen's coach, Mike Krzyzewski?
OK.
The real story is that Oregon's coach did not upbraid Krzyzewski for being such a goddamned hypocrite. If Oregon's coach was a Twitter maestro like Jim Harbaugh, he'd tweet something along the lines of "Thanks, Coach K., for your concern about our players being classy. Be sure to share that advice with your own team! #HeBeTrippin'".

like a statement written by the Oregon Athletic Department when asked about it after the game. Said something to the effect of "Coach K was right, I have to respect Duke and Coach K because they're both so great. What I did wasn't right, but I'm just a passionate player." Not the exact quote, but something to that effect. Wish he would've called K a ratfaced dick and farted in the direction of the Duke locker room instead.

be a shame if anything happened to it.
There's no doubt that you could go back and find dozens of Duke games where they were piling it on late in the game against their opponents. If he doesn't like a late three in NCAA competition, then block the fucking shot.

It was not Oregon's job to stop Oregon from scoring, it was yours. Seems like you didn't quite get that done. Enjoy the time off.
Sincerely,
Everyone (other than Duke fans)

This story is otherwise known as "Guy whose fans pride themselves on researching opponents' personal lives in order to be the best dicks anywhere lectures other teams on sportsmanship." It's like a verbose Onion headline.

Instead of "Guy ...",
I'd go with "Sanctimonious prick ...".
March 25th, 2016 at 11:00 AM ^
Instead of teaching the Oregon players respect maybe he should focus on his own team.

Saw it live and thought it was total BS. Guard him if you don't want him to take an open shot. Imagine both the coach and star player throwing hissy fits over something that trivial.

It's bitterness with a dash of envy. Duke is not only the best basketball program (by far) of the last 30 years, but they handed it to Michigan when it mattered, when Michigan had its most talented team ever. K gets the same hate on here that Harbaugh gets on other boards, we just love Jim because he's one of us, he's OUR arrogant, win-or-die-trying man. I think that most people who aren't affiliated with either Duke or a team they embarassed in a high profile game (or who grew up rooting for Duke as your secondary team like I did) have tons and tons of respect for Coach K. His NCAA win percentage is crazy and he is one Final Four away from passing Wooden (will probably get there next year) for most all time. He has accomplished an incredible amount without a major scandal, at a university that cares more about academics than even Michigan does. He's done at Duke what Jim did at Stanford - create an athletic powerhouse at a school where academics come first, second, and third. Coach K is one of the best coaches, across all sports, of all time.
Coach K is indiputably an all-time great coach, but I for one hate Duke not because of envy or bitterness, but because they are consistently the most unlikable team.
Wojo, Reddick, Laettner, Hurley, Paulus, Scheyer, Allen....the list of truly annoying Duke players is staggering.
Their style of play (floor-slapping, flopping, dirty play, over-coached) is boring and soul-sapping.
Watching basketball can be so exhilirating - just watch the Warriors these days - yet Duke manages to make it drudgery.
The one positive thing I'll say about Duke basketball under Coach K is they give me a perfect villain. Sports is more fun when you choose a side.
so I take it Izzo and Matta--plus Saban, Meyer and Dantonio--will start being accorded due "respect" here ?
Coach K can be both a successful coach and a hypocritical weasel. And he is.

Coach K is obviously recruiting the wrong kind of players since he didn;t make it into the elite eight.
