Per rivals ($): DCC down to 5: Leavitt, Anderson, Pees, Randy Shannon, and Butch Davis

Submitted by gremlin3 on

Yes, that Randy Shannon and that Butch Davis. Apparently they even reached out to Harbaugh and asked to be interviewed.

Best I can do for a LINK. ($) (Yes, it's paywalled.)

Calling alum96, profile it up, baby. (I've only found Leavitt and Anderson posts.)

Wouldn't be an awful hire. He's fine as a DC and will do us good with his recruiting down south. I also don't think he'd leave after one year. Also, he coaches LB so he'd fill that need. I'd be on board.

He's also a linebacker coach and an excellent recruiter (IIRC), so he could plug right into what Durkin was doing.  Not sure where that would leave Partridge, but otherwise it makes a lot of sense. I would take him in a heartbeat.

It's also worth noting that, while he ultimately lacked control at Miami, he wasn't involved in any of the stuff with Shapiro (the renegade booster) and had in fact told players to stay away from him.

"Wouldn't be an awful hire"?

What is with this interpretation and mood? Shannon would be a phenomenal hire. Durkin came with a lot of "I'm super young and hyped" intangibles, but it's readily arguable that Randy would be a more impressive get this year than DJ last year.

I was looking thru the Baltimore ravens staff once it was confirmed Mattison would be staying onto thru the bowl as it made me suspect a NFL person would be next DC.  Also I assume John will be firing some people (mgmt pressure) post this debacle year and Pees came to mind.  That said he is 66 - which is Mattison age - so I don't get the upgrade there.

Leavitt has massive baggage that is going to be difficult to explain to recruits families BUT the Flanagan trio was in Colorado visiting Leavitt last week so ....well it would be weird.

Butch is 64 and has not coached since 2010.

Andersen had a rough yr at Stanford with his 1st solo gig but you see the connection there and some say Stanford had a young D.  Well we will have a young D in 2017 and having the 60th ranked D in 2017 doesnt excite - but again you can see the connection.

So uhhh... #Harbaugh and stuff.

p.s. I did more digging on Houston's Orlando and Narduzzi wanted him as DC.  But Houston outbid Pitt.  Say what you want but Narduzzi knows defensive talent. Disappointed he is not at least in the mix.

p.s.s. Shannon looks kind of interesting - been a LB coach which we need and DC from 01-06 and HC for Miami.  49 yrs old.  UF's DC came over from Miss State and did a great job this year so maybe Shannon got some pixie dust from him this year too.  Also you get that south florida connection.  I guess of these 5 he has the most ceiling?

Anderson wasn't promoted for the 2014 season?  Mason's been gone for two years.  And they had very heavy personnel loses on defense coming into the year.  They were great on defense last year.

My only concern with him is that Oregon has blitzed them pretty good the last two years.  I would like to see someone with positive experience against spread running teams.  It's also why I'm down on Leavitt, Davis, and Pees.  Their lack of recent college experience worries me.

I think Shannon would be a home run.

Just not in the last few years, aside from this past season at Colorado, and he was head coach for a long time, so who knows how involved he was in defensive scheming at USF.

I feel like offensive schemes evolve quickly and his recent time in the NFL could be a problem against the newer schemes.  I'd prefer a guy who has been intimately involved in scheming against college offenses for the past few years.

As a ravens fan please dear god no dean pees.  He would be available for a reason and its because he is a terrible dc.  His defenses are a worse version of Matttison, and while we all love Mattison he probably isn't good enough to maintain a truly elite D and neither will a worse version of him.

After doing some mild digging as well I really am on board with Shannon.  Say what you want about his HC record but while he was at Miami as a DC and HC there defenses were still usually top 20 every yr even when they had terrible records.  His stints at other schools since then have also produced top FEI D's as well.

Plus, yeah, Florida, he knows how to recruit there.

I heard the same this morning.

The timing for Randy Shannon would be awkward--with Michigan playing Florida in the Citrus bowl--however he does seem like a decent fit. He's a great recruiter and has a focus on linebackers.

My concern would be that this is a stepping stone back to a head coaching position. After Miami, he spent one year at TCU, a couple at Arkansas (when Bert took over), then one year at Florida.

I don't view coaches using the M defensive coordinator spot as a stepping stone to a HC position as a negative at all.  Some guys are happy being career assistants, and that's fine.  But most of the best coaches want to run their own show.  If that means we have to hire a new DC in another year or two, so be it--probably means the guy we hired did a great job and that's why other schools want him.

But not if they're interviewing during the last week of the season. We've no proof that was why our defense was off their game...but shit, I think there's some justification regarding the bitterness some of us feel.

I think he would have had chances at a non-Power 5 job already. I'm not too worried about hiring guys that have ambition. I think that's mostly what you should want on the staff, with a maybe a couple of lifers that will retire when they leave.

I'd be happy to take my chances of Shannon sticking around for awhile as opposed to someone already having their name floated out as a HC candidate.

Could Shannon and Davis handle  Harbaugh's fanatical style??

Shannon's probably the mosty attractive candidate considering his ability as a coordinator and as a recruiter. Florida pipeline would immediately open up.

Do not want Pees or Anderson. A quick twitter search of Pees reveals Ravens fans are NOT happy with him. Anderson's scheme is soft and too much bend don't break.

So I guess put me down for one of the other 3.
