Top rival in basketball?
this broke out in another thread, and it isn't an official discussion unless it's a sanctioned DISCUSS thread. Plus, this will get more thoughts.
Who is Michigan's top rival in basketball? Some in the thread mentioned say OSU, many others say MSU, and others say Indiana.
i say it's obviously indiana. Long, bad blood history between the two teams. Our struggles at Assembly Call and the fact that the teams both played for a national championship once put it over the top.

Classic line of commentary. But yes, huge stretch for the sake of making an argument... I mean PBR sucks.

Don't know why someone keeps downvoting the MSU responses, when that's obviously the correct answer.

It's kind of Michigan State by default for hockey and basketball because OSU fans really don't care about either sport honestly.

yeah I mean there were times in the early 00's when people legitimately argued that hockey was the second most popular sport on campus, and they were taken seriously.

Cameron Indoor is garbage. It's a cool atmosphere because they pack students so close to the court, but it seats under 10,000 and is really old. It wouldn't be the right type of arena for Michigan at all.
Crisler works quite well, we just need to move more students to the lower bowl. The student section setup currently is ridiculous.
November 24th, 2015 at 10:48 AM ^
Have you been there? Just curious. I went to a game a week or so ago - and a handful of games every year - and it's been consistently upgraded. Crowded and old, yes. But it's far from garbage. It's a lot like Yost is now after the rehab. Only better.
November 24th, 2015 at 11:52 AM ^
I have. Again, I thought the atmosphere was good and I had a fun time, however it's not by itself an impressive area by any stretch of the imagination. We wouldn't want to build "something like Cameron Indoor".
November 24th, 2015 at 10:21 AM ^
Clearly you have not been inside Crisler Center?!?!??!?!
It has to be the nicest stadium in the Big Ten. Pristine concourse, layout, design. Sure, it's on the smaller end, but with indoor arenas size matters less than outdoor ones.

If anyone in this thread just so happens to have a binder that would tell them who UM bball has played the most in its history, it would be an interesting answer for top rival.
I mean, on the off chance anyone has such a binder...

OP, are you fuckin' nuts? Indiana? And who said Illinois? That's just an embarrassment of an answer.
I'm old and yes I remember the hey day of both of those rivalries. But neither come close to MSU and OSU. In my book, MSU is always #1 basketball rival, but I have no argument with someone who says OSU is #1 rival simply because Fuck OSU.
/excuse my language

It's MSU. They're always competitive and the atmosphere is always intense, something you can't even say for OSU.

Growing up in the 80s, Illinois with Sweet Lou Henson was a top end program as was of course the chair throwin Bobby Knights. MSU had some cool players like Skiles and a run here or there, but Ill and Ind were top programs. Much like UM Ill didnt win many titles in Big 10 due to Indiana (finished 2nd thru 4th almost the entire 1980s) but they had some great battles of course with highlight in 1989 NCAAs! Kendall Gill was one of my fav players in that era!
People younger than us only know 1990s or after so I understand them thinking MSU was always like this.
1982 - 83 | Lou Henson | 21 - 11 | 11 - 7 | 2nd(T) | NCAA 1st Round |
1983 - 84 | Lou Henson | 26 - 5 | 15 - 3 | 1st(T) | NCAA Elite Eight |
1984 - 85 | Lou Henson | 26 - 9 | 12 - 6 | 2nd | NCAA Sweet 16 |
1985 - 86 | Lou Henson | 22 - 10 | 11 - 7 | 4th(T) | NCAA 2nd Round |
1986 - 87 | Lou Henson | 23 - 8 | 13 - 5 | 4th | NCAA 1st Round |
1987 - 88 | Lou Henson | 23 - 10 | 12 - 6 | 3rd(T) | NCAA 2nd Round |
1988 - 89 | Lou Henson | 31 - 5 | 14 - 4 | 2nd | NCAA Final Four |
1989 - 90 | Lou Henson | 21 - 8 | 11 - 7 | 4th(T) | NCAA 1st Round |

in the late 80's and early 90's was bigger than either of those schools with Michigan.
November 23rd, 2015 at 11:34 PM ^
Oh yeah. IND and ILL were prob the 2 most consistent programs in the 1980s. UM had so much talent but seemed to not utilize it consistently - I mean a team with Tarpley Grant Vaught et al...
November 24th, 2015 at 12:31 PM ^
was not on that team. he was on the natty title team. the team that won back to back big ten titles in the mid 80s was - grant, joubert, tarpley, wade, relford. henderson and rockymore off the bench. i remember rockymore saving the game in the first round of the tourny when grant froze up and played horribly.

in that order...
I know that the ACC rivalries (esp. UNC) and Kentucky are bigger rivals for Duke but even at Cameron, it gets pretty intene whenever Michigan goes there.

#1 MSU - The most competitive series, which Michigan still leads all time.
#2 OSU - On paper it could become a pretty good rivalry since OSU doesn't really have a true basketball rival, but other than the epic Elite 8 game in 1992, there haven't been too many memorable games between the two.
#3 Indiana - This was pretty heated in the days of Knight and the Fab 5. Was not alive for the national championship game, but that alone has to count for something.
#4 Duke - When this was an annual game, according to Coach K it was the best non conference matchup out there.
#5 Illinois - Too young to remember the epic 1989 Final Four, but this has to rank up there among Michigan basketball's best wins.
