Is John O'Korn The Great Hope?

Submitted by stephenrjking on

Next year's defense is going to be great, right? Our OL is mostly back, and there's even cautious optimism that Cole might be able to fill right in at center with Newsome moving to LT, and one of our RBs (or a future 5-star RB, hypothetically) will surely be able to have a strong season next year.

Our receivers are good but not great, but the play on the field has clearly shown that Harbaugh and Drevno know how to draw up plays that will get them open. They just need someone to get them the ball.

...It sounds to me like we're a QB away from being a serious playoff contender next season. Like, really serious, preseason top 5 type. But it doesn't look like it will be Shane, with mounting whisper evidence that he may transfer. Wilton Speight made a couple of plays but there's no evidence that he's anything other than a career backup here. And it's not clear yet what Zach Gentry will be--Angelique Chengelis (who I like) took a vague non-denial by Tim Drevno and turned it into a story suggesting that Gentry may switch positions.

That leaves us with transfer John O'Korn. I saw one or two people in isolated threads say that they heard he looks good in practice, but we hear that about hundreds of guys. He does have a year of experience starting at Houston, with promising but mixed results. But, really, we know nothing about what he will be on the field in a Michigan uniform.

There's a lot riding on this. Anyone know what to expect?

It looks it'll be Gedeon and a bunch of question marks after that. It would be nice if Lawrence Marshall showed something at the buck before the season is out, but I'm not holding my breath. And hopefully Winovich, Furbush, McCray, or a freshman can be a decent running mate for Gedeon.

on paper in the QB department.  Someone's going to emerge, I can feel it.  Solid OL is going to be nice to have.  Wishing for some more wide receivers.  I hope Ways has some Mo' to show us.  Also hope Isaac can get out of the doghouse and out of the fumblerooski business because he's potentially got one more year past Smith and Green.

Also, Peppers.

I generally like Angelique but that was a stupid question and an even stupider story. Gentry hasn't been here a year yet.

Another example of a reporter having the story written first and asking questions to prompt answers that fit their angle.

is the Shane's transferring/ not as good as O'Korn based on insider knowledge or practice news or is it just based on guesses/ film from last year? I'm not an insider and have no original sources and am just curious. Thanks!

The transferring whispers are based on the redshirt and falling behind Speight.  The O'Korn being better point is all based on insider knowledge, I'd imagine.  I've read that O'Korn would have been the starter if he was eligible, but I don't know how true that is.

It's all "insider" information from a bunch of guys on this blog and other blogs that say someone in the "know" told them O'korn is the next great. As far as the Shane transferring goes I don't buy it, I believe there may be some rumblings about a possible transfer but watch that film or Minny, I saw Shane talking to Wilton an Jake going over plays. My personal believe is if Shane doesn't win the Job during the spring than maybe he transfers other then that I call bullshit

I'm really hoping he stays at QB.  His size and athletic ability are the most impressive of the QB's next year IMO.  Of course, the big question is can he become a field general at QB who can make the right decisions.  Only time will tell.  If he can't, then I suppose a switch to TE could be the best thing.

Peters is starting school in January and he seems to be M's best QB prospect since Mallett or Henne.  From what I've seen and read, he's also a camp rat and is really serious about developing his skills.

Whoever it ends up being, QB play should be an upgrade from this year.

I'm bullish on O'Korn. He had a good first season as a true freshman starter playing in a pass-happy offense. His struggles began when Houston switched coordinators. I think he'll be much better than Rudock.

Amazing the lack of love Speight has gotten and continues to get from this fanbase.

Led us to a victory last weekend during nut cutting time with no other options after looking over matched early on.  I'm not sure that Rudock would've done the same thing.

The great hope is that we have like 6 guys competing for the job. Someone out of O'Korn, Speight, Morris, Gentry, Malzone and Peters is going to win the job. With that many guys competing, and with all but Peters being here for at least a year absorbing the system, and with Peters planning to enroll early IIRC, the end result is probably at least going to be decent.

Jim Harbaugh, the quarterback whisperer, is the great hope of Michigan.

O'Korn will have a year of JH coaching under his belt and his experience gives him an edge.  However, there will be a stable full of eager and hardworking young guys who all believe they will be the starter.

Our problem, which is not a problem, will be having hyper talented quarterbacks fighting each other tooth and nail for the job.

Let the games begin!

Michigan would be 8-0. He was the best QB on the field during Fall camp. He will start next year and will have Michigan sitting at 3-0 entering conference play.

The assumption before the season always seemed to be Kugler as heir apparent at Center and if Cole moved inside maybe he'd go to guard in case of injury. Any particular reason this has gone by the wayside?

O'Korn is key for sure, but it's hard to imagine that the passing game is going to be a force next year, given the WR personnel. Presumably Harris and Cole will be a bigger part of the mix, but it's asking a lot for them to go from virtually no production this year to being impact players the next.

Ultimately, it all comes back to the run game. The day Michigan is able to run the ball again is when we'll really have something. Maybe getting to play in the same system for a second straight year (they're on their third OC in three years) will help the OL.

next season will be an upgrade over Rudock, but I think Rudock has done a good job even though I was hoping his passing accuracy would have been better. The competition will be fierce. Morris will probably transfer is he does not compete well with the others during spring practice. Though, he could surprise everyone and be the best QB going into next summer. My guess is that it will be O'korn. He's learning the offense this season and has the experience of starting that the others do not have. My guess is O'korn will start again in 2017, which may help the offense score more points to help out a young defense. You will not hear Harbaugh making excuses about youth and I still think Harbaugh will have this team in contention for 2017. 2018 through 2020 should be exciting with a good defense and Peters leading an offense that will score a lot of points. 2019 is Harbaugh 4th season and I expect him to make it into the playoffs though we may have to deal with more 8-9 win seasons in 2016 and 2017.

As long as O'Korn lives up to the hype of Nathan Brink and Freddy Footwork Michigan will be fine.

who gives a damn about great hopes? People were clamoring for the 'great hope' Drew Henson over Tom Brady and it wasn't especially helpful.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to wait who convinces the coaches and then gets the job..Like any of us are really in the position to know who will be the best QB on the team 10 months from now.

Since I've seen only Wilton and Shane play a college game I'll go with Wilton. O'Korn did compete in a conference not known for much in the way of defense. I would not rule out a freshman. Obviously it happens. How about Vicious Vic V.?
