As a DC resident, full…

As a DC resident, full support on keeping Maryland on the schedule every year.

It’s so nice to take a $25/20 minute Uber up to watch the team every other year. There are a ton of us here and we show up in significantly greater numbers in College Park than the NYC alums do to Piscataway.

Logged in for the first time…

Logged in for the first time in years because this is almost exactly my life. Seems like you have a reasonable handle on things.

I pretty much only drink in social settings or to compliment a meal, smoke to wind down or have a low key evening, and I share a lot of the same feelings, overall. Could I go without alcohol or other substances pretty much cold? Yes, fairly easily. But I also enjoy it and think part of being an adult is growing through responsibility, including treating almost everything in life with moderation - from alcohol, drugs, sex, etc. on one end (of what people traditional consider those things) to work, exercise, religion, sports, family, etc. on the other end. Too much of anything does not seem like a healthy lifestyle, at least from my perspective.

Be responsible about what you’ve taken on responsibility for in life and find a happy medium to enjoy the other things. Sounds like you’re pretty much there and continue to occasionally evaluate where you stand. The fact you’re introspective about it before being forced to by external factors is a great sign.

Dave Biddle is probably…

Dave Biddle is probably equally or less credible than random internet person, just to be clear. He’s absolutely a mouthpiece for the more insane factions at OSU.

Yes - it's all coordinated…

Yes - it's all coordinated effort and maneuvering behind the scenes by those who want to play.

Unless the medical reality…

Unless the medical reality changes dramatically in the next 3 months, I'm not supporting the team if they play. It's stupid and irresponsible when people are having long-term, serious lingering issues from COVID and a substantial percent of football players have underlying conditions making them more susceptible to them. Sports are entertainment; life has been put into perspective: Entertainment is for functioning societies and, frankly, I don't think we meet that criteria at the moment.

I don't know why I'm surprised by the amount of people here who are losing their minds about it, but I've just thrown up my hands and will do my best to practice what I'm preaching and not be a hypocrite.

Jesus Christ this is stupid…

Jesus Christ this is stupid.

The Presidents made the decision out of safety. It was their decision to make and they gave the reason.

Employees have regular update meetings with their bosses. They even sometimes schedule meetings to talk about specific topics. But yes, there's no way an AD and President could have communicated other than a conference call with everyone on at the same time.

I still have two of those…

I still have two of those from the Big Chill. Fantastic!

I don’t think most are saying he can’t have an opinion. I think most are saying “Who is this guy and who cares what ridiculous inflammatory thing he said?”

At least, that’s what I’m saying...

This is the dumbest post I…

This is the dumbest post I’ve seen in a long time.

Hey detective - high school kids change their mind and we could replace Texas with Michigan/Alabama/Georgia (or Michigan with OSU) in this story and it reads like the last five years of recruiting.

Who knows, maybe he changed his mind. Maybe he got paid by someone. Maybe he’s 17. You’ve made a strong argument. It’s all stupid anyway. Hope he lives up to his potential and makes a solid paycheck in the NFL and if not, gets a good education and is a good person.

I haven’t posted in a few years but I’ve learned to lighten up. But damn, easy. He’s not coming to Michigan. Or maybe he’ll change his mind and come here.

My point: the main red flag is you. Relax.

Because of the well-stated…

Because of the well-stated reasons slightly above this, most important in my mind is the actual prejudice that exists in the world (not fair but reality) and how recruiting 13-17 boys would work. With Juwan, that factor is exactly the opposite impact as an NBA player, NBA coach, iconic NCAA team, etc.

Plus, she’s on an NBA track and it’s safer for both her and the university to go a more traditional route.

My opinion is that the recruiting prejudice is too risky to take the chance. I’d rather have her than the bottom half or third of the list Brian gave us. She could be a great coach but the pressure would be on - her, the university, Warde. Big time.

Regarding Brian’s loss of…

Regarding Brian’s loss of words for the $0 buyout, my speculation is that negotiating point (with Beilein as his own agent) may be one of the things that led Ward to say (paraphrasing) “I knew he was taking the next NBA job he was offered.”

Not sure that’s still around but a great place to enjoy a 3:30 game and be as rowdy as you want while basically having the place to yourself until around 9.

Also bizarre to see the OP asking this.

In addition to the other suggestions, you can always go to BW3 on State if you want to enjoy what it feels like to watch the game everywhere else in the country. But...why?

Rough. Change her birthday to May?

Nicer weather anyway. Plus she gets two birthdays the first year.

Great point that I left out…

Great point that I left out of my post.

I’ve turned big games/uneventful Saturdays into events at our place that she can invite people over and go big on food, drinks, etc., and she loves to host. Excellent win-win.

The sad part is when everyone heads to the bar after and I want to watch the night games. But there are worse tragedies than coming back to catch two random PAC teams playing a 48-42 game at 1 AM.

Great problem to have!

“This game is better!” is far more preferable than “why are we doing this?”

Great topic. Interested to…

Great topic. Interested to read the responses.

1 - 32 with 30-year-old girlfriend. Been together 6ish years.

2 - All, with exception of major events I can’t control (2018 has been rough - her childhood friend’s wedding on ND evening, international trip with/paid for by her parents on Wisconsin weekend [cant really complain]). She loves AA and likes my Detroit-area social circle so we generally fly in for a game or two per year. The tailgates are her highlight.

3 - Generally super cool. She comes from two Buckeye alum parents who aren’t crazy fans (her mom couldn’t care less) so she understands the intensity of my fandom. Went to a small, private college so she can’t relate directly and her friends refer to my cfb Saturdays as “#sportz” to put things in perspective. I am (in my mind) very accommodating throughout the rest of the year to earn this freedom and I think she recognizes this. I’m not a big NFL guy so I can usually push things to Sunday when necessary.

She’s a part-time fitness instructor when not doing her day job so I’ve bribed her fandom with awesome dry fit M workout gear. For a few hundred bucks a year, she’s always repping the good guys.

Let’s just be clear that as…

Let’s just be clear that as a DC resident, I am still wholeheartedly in favor of them playing on the East coast once a year.

I mean, I’d be down to drop Rutger for Virginia or UNC (out of ACC they won’t get away with that shit) in a second but this is an easy game to get to, costs $30/ticket, I can watch w my NYC friends, that is basically a home game.

Somebody’s gotta lose in the Big Ten East, otherwise we talk about how much Indiana sucks. Why not Rutger?

Up, overall. Based on…

Up, overall. Based on expectations:

Offensive line: better (excising ND game - thought we were dead after that game)

Shea: more mobile, less gunslinger than expected. Overall performance about right. MOXIE.

Higdon: Wow, love the play. Wasn’t high on him but turning into a guy to talk about in 10 years.

DPJ: playing well, throw him the ball more, Shea!

Defense: excellent, better than expected, especially D-line depth.

Gary: clearly injured but, like Peppers, wish we had more time.

Bush: Damn, amazing LB and leader. Pretty close to locking up all-time-favorite-M-team-in-my-life status.

Winovich: knew he was a beast, love him taking over for Gary when out. Not a one trick pony.

UCHE: Damn. Winovich heir apparent?

Metellus: Favorite safety since mid 00s (sorry more fun than Kovacs/still love Kovacs)

Coaching: clearly improved in many facets on offense and coming together. Wouldn’t trade the D staff for anyone, Bama included.

Website: I post less and more mainstream dweebs but still better than many give credit. Brian’s writing on point this year. Miss Ace. Seth has become a great analyst (in addition to his biz acumen), and the rest of the gang does a great job with the rest.

As someone who has dipped…

As someone who has dipped for 10+ years since junior hockey and ya been trying to stop for a couple years, this is great news. I try to be disciplined but it’s consistently better with less side effects than any other vice I’ve tried. I know it’s bad for me but it’s pleasurable and I’d rather do that than consistently drink or smoke.

In summary: bad but good to know it could be worse. I’m just glad I’m not a regular automobile user.

Great piece. Really…

Great piece. Really interesting & well-written. Bummer we missed on Jack Hughes but 2/3 ain't bad.

In Don Brown's defense, Sam…

In Don Brown's defense, Sam and Viper are the same spot on the field with different positional/situational roles and strengths/weaknesses.

The Viper has rarely taken the place of a second safety, hence why Brown has prioritized the linebacker-shaped prospects you pointed out (Gay, Reese).

I can't tell if you're trolling or not, but I really hope you get banned asap.

Dammit

This is so frustrating...

I don't care

I don't care. I never understood "fan interaction" with athletes. Same with movie stars or musicians.

They're people that I don't know. I want to see them do what they're good at: play sports or act or make music.

And from the player's perspective, I wouldn't want to not get paid to say hi to a bunch of strangers I've never met when I already have limited personal time. Leave the players alone.

I root for anything Pujols.

How can you not root for someone named poo holes?

It's hard...

It's hard to separate actual coaching ability (talent identification, player development, game planning and in-game adjustments) from other program-building activities (recruiting, publicity, donor/alum relationships) from bottom-line results (winning games, championships, and NBA draft picks).

Program building often comes with inherent historical or program advantages/disadvantages. Bottom-line results often means all of the shadiness involved in dirty recruiting, shoe company relationships, and looking past player misconduct, be it criminal or just immoral.

I'll take Beilein and Jay Wright in the first category. I'm sure there are a solid number that could fit in here from mid-major and low-major programs.

It's hard to argue with Calipari, Self and K in the latter. Izzo used to be in the middle category for me but now falls more into this category the more that comes out about how he let a lot of his guys get away with pretty much anything.

LOL

LOL whatever Crowell.

There's a lot people haven't seen State coaches do in Dantonio's tenure.

Dayenu!

Day day dayenu!

Just went to my second-ever Passover Seder on Friday night. Sang that song!

Great, great post!

Wow

Wow, I didn't even make it to the end. This has to be some sort of mind-fuck troll, no? Let's review:

  • Post an 11W article
  • Agrees with conference pride
  • Would encourage M fans to not root against OSU(!)
  • Has tough time rooting against Duke
  • Would root for MSU(!!)
  • DEFENDS MSU(!!!)
  • DEFENDS RCMB(!!!!/head asplode)

If you're looking for a template for downvotes, here it is, people! ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?!?!

I appreciate

I appreciate you posting this because it is one of his best pieces, up there with his treatise on fall weddings.

BUT - but but but - conference loyalty is lame in the playoffs. During the regular season, whatever, it helps SOS. Playoffs? No way - I root for rivals to lose as early and painfully as possible. End of story.

WTF

WTF...man those are some terrible hockey suggestions. Normally we're generally on the same page about hockey but if you implement those rules, that's not hockey anymore.

If your entire motive is to create more goals at any cost, you might as well remove checking, make the puck smaller, go totally crazy on goalie equipment (get rid of goalie glovehands, make their blocker the size of the back of their hand, give them a smaller version of football goalpost pads as leg pads), outlaw butterfly-style goaltending by making it a penalty to be on their knees longer than a second, make it a goal if only part of the puck crosses the goalline...

At that point, what sport are we playing again?
