Poll: Which Michigan Road/Neutral Games Have You Attended?

Submitted by UNCWolverine on

Tomorrow night will be my 19th road/neutral Michigan game, including 4th straight road opener. I'm 8-10. Here's my list:

2015 Utah
2014 ND
2013 Northwestern
2012 Alabama
2012 ND
2012 Purdue
2012 Virginia Tech
2009 Iowa
2007 USC
2004 ND
2004 Purdue
2001 Washington
2000 UCLA
2000 Purdue
2000 Northwestern
1999 Wisconsin
1998 Northwestern
1998 Washington State
1997 Indiana

I should add we only lost those three games in 2000, and by a combined 7 points. Saw three goal posts come down that fall. Had I not gone we might have won another national championship.

So what's your list?

1985 Iowa
1986 Notre Dame
1987 Illinois
2011 Northwestern
2012 Sugar Bowl

Most exciting was 1985 Iowa (#1) vs. Michigan (#2). Mr. Harbaugh was our QB. We lost 12-10 on a last-second FG, right in front of us.

I lived in Des Moines for a while so went to the 2011 and 2013 games in Iowa City. Not great results but I thought Kinnick was a great venue and Iowa City seems like a cool town. I'm likely going to the Minnesota game this year since I may be relocating to Minneapolis. I've been to TCF once before, not really impressed with the stadium but it is Halloween night.

Overall record: a putrid 4-8

That stretch from 2008-2010 was just brutal: 1-5 with the lone victory over a terrible Indiana team.

Have Minnesota and Maryland on the docket for this season.  Looking forward to some revenge on the turtles.

It's hard being a Michigan fan in Georgia. We (Michigan and Georgia) seem to almost always ALMOST be matched together in bowls but thank god it's never actually happened yet.

Went to Northwestern in 2013 and witnessed the ovetime victory. We got tickets from a Northwestern alum who made a point to ask us not to drink or smoke in his seats as he was among the "big" donors. Which ended up being all these old Northwestern dudes that talked shit about Michigan the whole game. It s a really laid-back old guy kind of way but still. It was my first experience ever at an away game of any kind so all-in-all - awesome. I almost died of a heart attack during the overitmes though probably.

And then the train thing to get back downtown was kind of a nightmare.

2012 Nebraska 9-23

2003 Oregon 27-31

2001 Washington 18-23

1998 Rose Bowl 21-16 (Washington State)

1989 UCLA 24-23

1983 Washington 24-25

Overall, being in attendance at the Rose Bowl which capped the only undefeated Michigan season in my lifetime makes up for:

  • watching Denard geting injured on what would have been the go-ahead TD drive at Nebraska
  • losing to the effing Ducks (in the state in which I live)
  • losing @Washington when a blocked FG is run back for six
  • losing @Washington after giving up 15 fourth quarter points

The 1989 win at UCLA came when UM scored the last ten points, IIRC.

1981 MSU (W) (my junior year; game that shows up on TV screen in The Big Chill)

1989 UCLA (W) (at the Rose Bowl, but a regular season game; won after successful on side kick)

1990 Rose Bowl v. USC  (L) (Bo's last game)

2010 @ South Bend vs Notre Dame (Denard's Long Run / Rainbow Game)

2012 @ Dallas vs Alabama

2015 @ Indianapolis vs Minnesota (Big10 Conference Championship Game)

2016 @ Pasadena vs USC

...

Did I jinx it?

Don't really keep track, but know I've been to:

  • 1993 Rose Bowl
  • 2004 Rose Bowl
  • Indiana
  • Northwestern (at least three times)
  • Illinois
  • Notre Dame (at least three times)

I live in metro Chicago, and would like to go to Wisconsin, Iowa, MSU, Purdue, and OSU. Maybe Minnesota. I don't see going to Nebraska, Penn State, Rutgers, or Maryland ever.

ND: 2010, 2012, 2014

Purdue: 06 or 07? It was Purdue and we were good (and I was drunk)

NW: a few games but I can't distinguish NW-M games from high school games

Wish list: Wisconsin, Nebraska, Bloomington (the city) (may go this year for the game too)

My list is smaller than I would like, but in my defense I made some pretty massive trips to non-Michigan games in my peak traveling years and felt that I needed some weekends at home to watch games on the 4 TV satellite setup I invested in. My Michigan list as I remember it: 1999, 2001 MSU 2000, 2002, 2004 OSU 2012 Minnesota 1997 Outback Bowl 2007 Rose Bowl My big holes are Wisconsin and Penn State, trips I wanted to make but could not prior to leaving Michigan. I have a much larger resume of college football venues that I attended on non-home weekends, and a huge list of hockey games (watching those on tv isn't the same at all) as well.

1998 Rose Bowl vs. Washington St. (the greatest moment of my sporting life)

2002 Citrus Bowl vs. Tennessee (Ugh, painful end to what should have been a great season...  derailed by Steinbrenner stealing Drew Henson.

2007 Rose Bowl vs. USC (had the better team on paper but couldn't overcome the triple blow of Bo dying, losing the OSU thriller and then getting screwed out of the rematch.

Also have been to 121 of the last 124 home games (Started in 1997 season).  Missed only 3 games due to weddings.  I might add I have missed many weddings to go to games just 3 I couldn't.

2004 Purdue - kid from my HS was Purdue's starting LG at the time. Got a press pass from our local newspaper to sit in the pressbox while my dad took photos from the sideline.

2009 Illinois

Now that I live in NC, I plan on making the trek up to DC when they're @ Maryland. Unfortunately due to a wedding, it won't be this year.

Also plan to be at the VA Tech series in a couple years. Short drive and my sister-in-law went to Med school at Tech so it'll be well worth it.

Don't remember all the years but I've been to Wisconsin two or three times in the 1990's, I've been to Northwestern a few times in the 1990's and early 2000's.  I've been to MSU a few times including the 1997 Woodson game!  I've been to Notre Dame a few times in the 1980's and 1990's.  And I've been to the Rose Bowl twice including the 1998 National Championship game versus Washington State.

2005 Northwestern and 2007 Illinois. Pulled both out despite the opponents being decent and coming in not-very-good years for us.
