CC-Call Your Shot

I thought this would be a fun way to waste some time today while at work.

Since it appears as though Brady "Nice Guys finnish* last" Hoke is going to be canned today, we should all throw our chips down on the table and declare who we think the next head coach, OC, and DC at Michigan is going to be.

My money:

HC: Tom Herman

OC: Lincoln Riley (No connection here; just a good coach)

DC: Chris Ash (Coached with Herman at Iowa State, OSU)

I think I could roll with your lineup of Herman (Ash and Riley as coord.'s).  I wasn't too familiar with Riley, but I just looked up ECU's stats.  #11 overall offense; #23 off. eff. in the country.

Nice.

EDIT: and not for one second do I think that Fickell is the brains behind that DC duo in Columbus.  Ash must be bringing something to the table.  Why Fickell is getting credited with the lead role (aside from being the holdover / interim HC) is beyond me.

Not sure who would be best for the program.

IMHO:

Best chance of a fast-track, short-term turnaround:  Les Miles or Jim Harbaugh

Longer-term turnaround, but perhaps longer-term coaching stability:  PJ Fleck (I like his youth and infectious enthusiasm)

Fleck should be someone we look at in the future but we can't take a chance on him now it's way too risky. That being said he's young and he'll be in the game for a while so if he moves up to a bigger program, say Cincinnati or something, then we should take him seriously.

destinations for Harbaugh this morning. Their "take" was all parties involved in the 49ers should try to work it out, but I think that was just Greenberg wanting to hear himself talk ... seems like that ship has sailed. They mentioned "Michigan" briefly and then started going through all the franchises with potential openings next year. They also referenced a Tim Sando insider story, but I don't have the Insider subscription. Doesn't sound like it contained anything more than what Schefter said yesterday (the web page includes the Schefter video).

Then I had to take off for work. Did anyone catch the full conversation?

Getting back on topic, my gut just doesn't see the Harbaughs or Miles happening. However, we all know that we need a lights-out home run. The weak-ish Big Ten is there for the taking but standing in the way are two outstanding coaches (you-know whos), and two more pretty darn good ones (Andersen and Franklin). Therefore I think you have got to back up the Brinks truck for Mullen, Wittingham or Patterson. Talk to Pelini and inquire with Stoops.

End of the day? Mullen. It's indeed a very Rodriguez-esque move, bringing in an outsider but hopefully all parties involved can learn from that previous transition.

On whether Harbaugh is coming. One says he is staying in NFL and the other says he's interested in returning to Michigan. Both have sources. The one I heard yesterday that was for coming to Michigan said Harbaugh hasn't comment on Michigan job out of respect for Hoke , who still is Michigan coach at the present time.

When I look at Mullen's HC record, I don't see the type of trajectory that would command us to go after him. He's had one stop and aside from this year, has basically bounced around a .500 winning percentage (.563 to be exact). Is this year an outlier or an upward trajectory? I would not be willing to hire a guy with one "great" data point.

2009: 5-7

2010: 9-4

2011: 7-6

2012: 8-5

2013: 7-6

2014: 10-2

Urban Meyer owns that offense, not Tom Herman. Frankly, most Ohio State fans don't like Tom Herman and think Urban Meyer should be calling the offensive plays. As with Narduzzi and Kirby Smart, how much of these coordinators' successes is attributable to having a head coach who is an excellent defensive (or in this case, offensive) mind? No thanks.

I definitely agree with this but only to a certain extent.  Yes Urban is going to own some of the offense since he’s an offensive guy but if it was his entire brain child why would they bring in guys and pay them as top coordinators?  Why not just bring in a guy for nothing?  Let’s not forget they are brought in because they add some good value.  I’m not saying Herman is even 1 of my top 5 choices but if we start missing on guys he’s someone we definitely need to take a look at.

Yeah I get your point and I don't think we should hire a coordinator as HC, I really think Herman knows what he's doing offensively. Believe it or not, Urban's offense at Florida was very different with Mullen at OC (almost identical to what Miss State runs).

I personally think that Herman has added more running elements to Urban's spread because if you recall while Tebow was a great runner they didn't have a feature back. I mean Carlos Hyde was Urban's first 1000 yard rusher so that has to count for something.

Contrast Florida/Addazio with OSU/Herman. Meyer relies on his OC more than you suspect.

it will NOT be Les Miles. . .

would love to have him, would have loved to have him here 7 years ago.  But the same reasons why he didn't get the job 7 years ago are still valid today.

issues are those?  Dave Brandon doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground and Martin doesn't understand cellular phones, issues?

Miles would be a perfect fit here.  Just like he would have been the last two times we went looking for a coach.

I honestly can't understand why people hate him so much.  Because he has some skeletons in his closet?  Who doesn't?  He takes Juco's and does what every other good coach in the SEC does to win?  Well, that's because he's a winner.

I think Les knows what would be expected of him both on and off the field in A2.  I don't think he would do anything to hurt the program, if only because it would tarnish his own legacy.  Pretty sure he won't try to push kids that don't know how to read through admissions.

The man eats lightning, craps thunder, and pisses excellence.  We'd be lucky to have him.

HC: Jim Harbaugh

OC: Cam Cameron

DC: Vic Fangio

Long shot, but I think it happens. I think Jim is tired of the controlling owners/GM's of the NFL. I think he only stays in the NFL if he's given HC/GM powers by the Jets or Bears.

Sorry to disagree but I'm saying it's Miles.  The Harbaugh's are an extreme longshot and while they'd definitely be anyone's plan A, Les is one hellofa consolation prized IMO.

It makes sense.  End of career - comes home to resurrect the franchise and tben grooms his successor to take over.

I've been on Miles from day 1 and I'm not waivering now.

Mile would be a perfect fit. I feel like he has an aproach to coaching that would toughen up our kids, mentally, very quickly. He could come in and have immediate success, recruiting would pick right back up , if not improve. And he could ride into the sunset after MAlzone wins us a National Championship. Yup, my coffee mug is full of Maize and Blue Koolaide this morning...

I agree completely.  Our situation is too dire to do anything but take the most minimal risk possible.  That means hiring an established winner.  You don't go for someone who has not been a successful head coach at a P5 team, which rules out coordinator promotions and MAC level guys.  If you don't succeed in the first round through Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen, and whatever few other names you want to throw in there, you just go back with more money until it works.

I admit that I am terrified 1) that they might sentimentally keep Hoke for another year, which would be utterly ruinous; or 2) roll the dice with an unestablished guy.  But I have optimism based on the clear financial message being sent by Michigan fans.  Our patience is up.  Keep Hoke and watch season ticket holders flee.  Hire some high risk, affordable candidate and watch us declare Michigan to be a basketball school anyway.  Surely a guy like Hacket can tell that '14 is different from '10 in terms of the fan's level of despair and frustration.  All that points to Harbauch, who probably will turn down the chance to be the next Bo, and then to Les.  Bring up the Mad Hatter.
