Matt Weiss: Cade McNamara Will Play 10 Years in the NFL
Matt Weiss, Michigan Football's Quarterbacks Coach, appeared on Jon Jansen's podcast today. Below is an intriguing quote Matt said:
"Cade is a guy who, for everything that people are gonna say... he's a guy that's gonna end up playing 10 years in the NFL. You can say he's not enough of this, not enough of that, but at the end of the day he's really smart, makes great decisions, he processes things really fast, and his arm strength and accuracy are more than enough to win with."
Matt goes on to say that Cade is the starter.

Why just 10, why not 12 - 13?
April 15th, 2021 at 11:05 AM ^
Why not 20 like Brady?
Why not 30 like Ryan Fitzmagic?
April 15th, 2021 at 11:06 AM ^
He'll get bored after his 10th straight MVP, and that's when he'll transition to being an NBA all star center.

These kind of predictions before a quarterback actually accomplishes anythingalways work out well:
"Ron Powlis will win the Heisman two times and be the greatest quarterback in the history of Notre Dame football. ". Beano Cook
April 15th, 2021 at 11:22 AM ^
Main difference: Beano had a flatulence problem he never could control. What leaked out of him nearly always stunk.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:40 AM ^
Ironically, Bean-o is supposed to control this type of leakage.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:58 AM ^
Ironically, Bean-o tears me up more than anything else.
My mom gave me some when I was 16 and Bean-o gave me even more gas! She actually had to take it away from me.
April 15th, 2021 at 12:39 PM ^
Because what 16 year old doesn’t enjoy the ability to lay it down on command.
I'm WAY past 16 and wish I had that power. It's probably due to being a Dad.
wish I had that power
Try some Bean-o then. Or a couple of Fiber-one bars.
It's probably due to being a Dad.
If that statement means you tone it down around the kiddos, you don't have to. Let it rip.
I guess it was a bit vague, but the Dad part is about the joy of blowing it up in front of the kids at will. The Daddest thing ever.
Oh hell yeah... my daughters are waist high... When it's time to make dinner as a family they're so excited to be cooking that they forget about being at ground zero.
Beano! LOL. I miss his takes and what soup he was going to eat that day.
Always looked like Beano was carrying an extra ten pounds of butter in his neck.
"Arm strength and accuracy are more than enough to win with." Wow, with praise like that...
Actually, it goes to 11.

If nothing else it is nice to hear someone say something of substance. So often these interviews are filled with non answers. I will take it.
I agree! That is one heck of a statement to make. If he can consistently put together play like what we saw last year I believe it. He looked like a comfortable and competent QB.
April 15th, 2021 at 10:49 AM ^
Damnit. Do I need to actually get excited about this now since he is new and doesn't have a history of blowing smoke?
April 15th, 2021 at 11:19 AM ^
We'll find out if Matt Weiss is prone to hyperbole like Fred Jackson was during his coaching days.
<MW's prediction on Cade McNamara has been noted.>
April 15th, 2021 at 11:50 AM ^
He's just falling in line with this program's history of blowing smoke.
April 15th, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
Matt Weiss seems unfamiliar with our history of unfulfilled quarterback hype.
And unfulfilled RB, WR, TE, OL, DT, S and PK hype.
I'll believe it when McNamara signs his non-rookie NFL contract. BTW, even the Brady career-arc would have him as an unheralded, 6th round draft choice, so...

As a child, my mother always told me that I was the most handsome boy in the world. What were we talking about again?
April 15th, 2021 at 11:49 AM ^
Maybe you were. Post a photo so we can verify.

Ugh, I don't like these types of quotes because they always come back to haunt us
April 15th, 2021 at 11:00 AM ^
Ugh, attrition strikes again. Best of luck in the NFL, Cade.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
I think/hope Weiss may end up being the best hire UM has made in a long time.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
Well shit, guess we don't need a 5* backup QB in JJ. This would ultimately mean JJ doesn't play for 2 or probably 3 years and he isnt going to wait that long. What a puzzling quote when a more talented guy is #2
April 15th, 2021 at 11:12 AM ^
Cade could theoretically go to the NFL after this season, as this will be his third year removed from high school.
So Cade puts on a Heisman performance, goes top 5 in next year’s draft, and we have a couple years of JJ. /s (not sure if it was obvious or not)
April 15th, 2021 at 11:19 AM ^
Umm... I don't get your concern. You have a guy saying that the QB will play 10 years in the NFL, yet you complain that his backup has more talent. So you, Mr Guy Fawkes, are saying that JJ McCarthy will play more than 10 years in the NFL?
And we're supposed to believe you, and all of your demonstrated football experience, over the current QB coach? Based on, what, a couple of high school highlight clips?
BTW, thanks for starting the next version of McCaffrey vs Milton... Or is this just Michigan's annual mini-series, 'As the QB Turns'?
April 15th, 2021 at 11:49 AM ^
If UM's QB situation is such that their current starter is better than the highly-rated backup, that's generally a good thing. It would actually be super-troubling if yet again the presumptive starter was usurped by an unproven backup who'd likely be prone to mistakes associated with the inevitably learning curve of college ball.
April 15th, 2021 at 12:18 PM ^
This is the best post describing UM fans right now. There is literally nothing the staff can say or do that would make some people happy. It hilarious.
April 15th, 2021 at 12:55 PM ^
What I'm saying is McNamara isnt the answer, wow he threw 10 good passes vs Rutgers and now hes the real deal. If we want a fresh new start to the program it comes by starting JJ and letting it roll. But same ol Michigan fans I guess cock gobbling every bit of positive info.
LOL at Cade leaving after this year, what a miraculous story. Michigan doesnt develop QBs for 20 years and then 1 pops off and goes 1st round after 1 year starting. Fuck off
Matt Weiss has been working IN THE NFL since 2009 (and not as a hot dog vendor). Hmmm, that seems like he may have some qualifications to understand football and football talent. Could he be wrong, sure. However, when someone who has played college ball, coached in college (GA at Stanford for 3-4 years), AND coached in the NFL "speculates" on talent, I feel THAT is worthy of consideration. Otherwise, it is just another Al Bundy keyboard warrior spouting off. Move on, chief.
How do you know McNamara isn’t the answer? He’s played a handful of snaps as a redshirt freshman.
See, this is why we let the kids hash it out in practice and the best player plays. So we don’t have some idiot online saying a kid with 71 attempts (with 60% completions, 5 TDs and 0 INTs) as a redshirt freshman isn’t the answer, but a true freshman that hasn’t played a down of college ball is.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:05 AM ^
When he wasnt hurt last year, he looked impressive. Say what you want about Rutger, but that doesnt change the fact that he LEAD receivers, had touch, and didnt seem to be constantly in panic mode.
Im not crowning him a Heisman but he has the tools to win games.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:40 AM ^
I believe we were down 17 when he came in and led us to a comeback win. Yes it's only Rutgers but that was pretty impressive for a kid who only had 4 career attempts previously.
April 15th, 2021 at 12:54 PM ^
Yeah, the dude played one half of football against Rutgers (and OT) and went 27-36 for 260 with 4 TD and 0 INT. Those are damn good numbers regardless of the opponent. And this was after he came in at the end of the Wisconsin game and looked awesome on a very small number of snaps (I know, it was garbage time). His Penn State snaps are essentially meaningless since he was clearly very injured after the first TD drive.
Small sample and opponent caveats apply, but we saw some evidence that the dude could really play when he was a RS freshman.
If they ever let him throw the ball 36 times in a whole game, much less a half, maybe that will have some relevance.
Not just the stats... He displayed moxie. I remember him looking at the sidelines as if to say, "Let's get the freakin' play in, c'mon let's go!" Leadership.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:47 AM ^
Definitely a small sample size, but he looked solid out there. Hopefully an offseason with starter reps will make him even better
April 15th, 2021 at 11:08 AM ^
Can he play DT?
Gah I have to stop
April 15th, 2021 at 11:42 AM ^
You can stop when we have more DTs
Can't stop anyone with out DT's.
Interesting thought. I wonder if the current staff is aware.
April 15th, 2021 at 11:08 AM ^
Here we go again. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
