Pat Caputo from 97.1 says Beilein left UM because of Izzo surge
I don’t understand the logic on this one. Caputo was adamant on air today stating his beliefs that Beilein left Michigan because of Izzo. Says MSU won three straight (which is true) and that the Spartans were accomplishing things that the wolverines no longer were. Claims Izzo was gaining so much momentum that Beilein knew he couldn’t compete with him anymore.
Am I alone in believing this is one of the worst takes possible?
The idiocy of many Spartan fans adds just a little more fuel to the fire for these upcoming games. Sorry for the rant.
Go Blue.

The dumber the take the more the clicks. But sure focus on history because that's all they have this year.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:32 PM ^
Not clicks in this case, but callers. They constantly say inflammatory shit on that station about UM to get people to call in and argue with them. That's the nature of the business. When people don't call in, they claim people don't like basketball.
February 27th, 2021 at 1:01 PM ^
Their business model on UM sports is so obvious. I tuned in on the weekend out of boredom and they had some truly bargain basement troll on the air trying to rile up M fans. Enough called in I guess. IDK, maybe some people just like the grabass of trash talk, but it's too bad we can't get decent car-radio analysis on any UM sports around here. Last I checked on TKA they were still mainly sunshine-blowing.
February 27th, 2021 at 2:25 PM ^
If you are looking for anything even remotely resembling decent analysis, local talk radio anywhere is probably the last place you should look. Ever.
I know. It's possible to be halfway decent though. We can't even get that.

If you haven’t realized that rationalizing Michigan success is their way of life for Michigan State fans, you need to come to grips with this reality. It is a sad existence. Just chuckle at them and then adjust the Big Ten crown on your head. ? ?
February 27th, 2021 at 5:17 PM ^
This. With every radio host on any talk show, their “success” is based on callers. Larger number of Callers makes the radio station seem more popular, which drives up advertising money.
So when listening to stations like 97.1, you have to take it with a grain of salt. Know that they have to throw in a few hot takes and have to rile up the local fan base to generate calls.
For guys like Caputo and Valenti, that means throwing shots at Michigan. For guys like Riger, they throw shots at Stafford and the Lions. People get pissed off and call in. They’re doing their jobs.
Is Caputo dumb enough to have a take like this? Sure. But he’s also smart enough to sell it the way he is to generate callers.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:49 AM ^
I don't think anyone that's seen those teams play against each other believes that.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:15 PM ^
End of thread
All those games were great rivalry games. Back and forth in everyone of them.
what a stupid take by a stupid radio personality
February 27th, 2021 at 1:55 PM ^
Yeah, and he was so scared of the not great college team, that instead he went to a franchise with no talent in the pros. Because that would be easier.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:50 AM ^
Ah yes. He left two years after making the NC game b/c Izzo beat him on the strength of some spectacular Winston performances. Beilein ONLY made the Sweet 16 that year. Clearly he saw the writing on the wall.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:50 AM ^
The hawt-est of hawt takes from talk radio. shocker.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:50 AM ^
Caputo is valenti's older evil twin....
Both are total a$$?
February 27th, 2021 at 1:20 PM ^
A classic example of "Consider the stupid source."
Run along, Pat. I'm sure there's a microphone somewhere that needs spitting on.
February 27th, 2021 at 1:31 PM ^
Caputo might be the only 97.1 host worse than Valenti. All he does is come in with hot takes, mispronounce names/words, and brag that he was a beat writer.
February 27th, 2021 at 1:53 PM ^
Once upon a time (like 20 years ago) Caputo hosted a morning show with Mark Wilson on DFN that was actually semi-entertaining. Since then Caputo, former beat writer and columnist for the legendary Oakland Press (legendary the length and breadth of Pontiac, Michigan), has become a caricature of the caricature of the caricature he initially became.
February 27th, 2021 at 6:23 PM ^
For the Oakland Press ...
February 27th, 2021 at 11:51 AM ^
It's not worth the breath to tear this "argument" apart.
It's dumb and he should feel bad for being this dumb.
February 27th, 2021 at 1:01 PM ^
Dumb people don't realize they're dumb because they're dumb.
February 28th, 2021 at 1:39 AM ^
Which is why trying to discuss/argue a topic with dumb people is an even dumber proposition
February 27th, 2021 at 11:52 AM ^
And then we are where we are now. This comment by Pat Capoodle is about as relevant as he is (okay).
February 27th, 2021 at 11:54 AM ^
Thank you for not providing any links. This isn't sarcasm. 97.1 nor any of its employees deserve any clicks or listens.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:54 AM ^
That take shows a total disregard from everything on record that is John Beilein.
It us much more evident that Pat Caputo is a douche.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:55 AM ^
Truly hilarious.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:55 AM ^
Going to see this on facebook in a few days claimed as fact.
February 27th, 2021 at 11:55 AM ^
Caputo is such a blowhard and staee slappy.
Someone ask him why deantonyio quit???
February 27th, 2021 at 11:58 AM ^
Obviously a dumb train of thought. Izzo has picked up his recruiting lately, but it hasn’t done much to widen any perceived gap. The only thing that was holding Beilein back recruiting wise was the perception of them playing a certain style of offense that made a lot of 5-stars think they couldn’t “shine” at UM, which I never thought made any damn sense. But overall in terms of team success, both programs are thought to be on even footing nationally at this point. I would argue they are the Top 2 basketball schools in the conference currently as far as program prestige/coach/etc...
February 27th, 2021 at 11:59 AM ^
Is there anyone on that station that makes it worth listening to?
February 27th, 2021 at 12:06 PM ^
Not a one.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
Jon Jansen. I was disappointed when Jon left SiriusXM to go to 97.1
February 27th, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
Caputo is unlistenable and clueless. Give me Valenti over him any day.
February 27th, 2021 at 1:16 PM ^
Why would you pick either of those 2 options when severing your ears is on the table?

February 27th, 2021 at 12:02 PM ^
He and MV are unlistenable. Sophomoric takes from guys who never played, don’t do homework, and are obviously green with envy.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:03 PM ^
dumb take.
I think Beilein got tired of watching kids leave early for the draft and having to start from scratch every year or two replacing key players personally...
Not only that, Beilein was actively interested in the NBA a year after being in the NC game.
Izzo didn't have anything to do this Beilein leaving
February 27th, 2021 at 12:03 PM ^
I always find it funny when people complain about Valenti, because he is far from the worst talking head in sports talk radio. The majority of them are closer to Caputo types.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:06 PM ^
I don’t understand how people can listen to windbags like him, Valenti, Colin whatever his name is . . . Those guys are just completely full of shit
February 27th, 2021 at 12:10 PM ^
John Beilein is the Man, Tom Izzy can never become.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:15 PM ^
Pat Caputo sounds like an idiot
February 27th, 2021 at 12:15 PM ^
Tom Izzo is an irrelevant meaningless factor and does not compute in John Beilein’s love of Michigan and world view of life.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:17 PM ^
Whatever helps them feel better about Michigan dominating the big ten. I don't know why this would make them feel better but I'm not a sparty.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
Lol. Like a retirement police sergeant friend told me once, "there is nobody stupider than people".
February 27th, 2021 at 12:24 PM ^
Beilein gets Mr. basketball Brandon Johns from East Lansing and says: I just can’t compete with Izzo anymore. I’m outta here.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:25 PM ^
This is the dumbest logic I ever heard.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:30 PM ^
I highly doubt it. No one team, rival or not, dictates so much sway over another program’s trajectory in college basketball. While it had an impact on the local recruiting, Beilein was still pulling in quality recruits and, largely, out-developing Izzo’s squads. I don’t see that changing. We dipped in his last year, but every team dips (see 20-21 MSU).
If I recall, it was rumored Beilein was flirting with the NBA for a couple years, and he finally bit. This wasn’t Saban leaving MSU for LSU supposedly for recruiting reasons, which at least is a more feasible explanation for football with so much quantity of recruiting, whether that was ever confirmed.
February 27th, 2021 at 12:39 PM ^
Izzo is going to be B1G coach of the year per Sam Webb.
February 27th, 2021 at 1:14 PM ^
it took izzo 20 games to figure out it's best to start your 5 best players
February 27th, 2021 at 1:51 PM ^
You realize that Webb is indulging in gigantic amounts of sarcastic snark when he says that, right?
February 27th, 2021 at 12:39 PM ^
Why pollute this board with such shit?
February 27th, 2021 at 12:42 PM ^
The Izzo angle is false. Beilein beat Izzo in previous years then came 2018-19 which Izzo's team won them all. The real truth behind Beilein leaving U of M was the 24/7 recruiting cycle. In the pros, he didn't have to recruit but that travel schedule required was a head scratcher to me. He also would have been afforded a real offseason in the pros which was what made him switch to the NBA. His age and energy required, per recruiting efforts, was a big factor for leaving Michigan as I heard it on local sports talk and on this message board in the past. I'll stand by that.
At least Beilein went out on a high note as he transformed the program into a winning culture and making NCAA runs was the norm.
