Easily, and by some distance, the worst analysis I've read on the USMNT 2022 WC cycle

I appreciate the insider…

I appreciate the insider info, and have for a while. If experience has taught fans anything, it's that FB reporting is always too optimistic by a few orders of magnitude.  So it's nice to have a balance of opinions

Crap.

Crap.

Thanks for that, and it…

Thanks for that, and it sounds like you made the right choice on the partner!  GT probably got the single worst seeding/bracket result imo.

FSU is actually on a late season swoon even worse than Michigan's, and watching the ACC this year vs watching the B1G (minus Nebraska) feels a lot like the difference of watching high school vs. college.

I think the B1G is going to show very well in the tournament.  Hope you're right about UConn

As a GT fan, I am very…

As a GT fan, I am very confused about the fear over FSU.  They are a team that tries to out-athlete and oversize you, sprinkled in with some very good 3 point shooting.  But any time they run into a frontcourt with skill (or any team with extremely well-defined roles in general) they tend to commit a million turnovers and then lose.

If you have a couple bigs that can bang with them down low - and the fouls will be more football than basketball - you should be way less worried about FSU than, say, LSU or Bama.  Also the ACC was very weak this year.  I think Michigan matches up well to FSU, with the possible exception of point guard.

Allegedly, what was heard…

Allegedly, what was heard was from Turgeon "don't hang the banner because your banners come down."

Edit: nevermind, apparently not true?

Yeah, and he was so scared of the not great college team, that instead he went to a franchise with no talent in the pros.  Because that would be easier.

Of Michigan vs. the places you mentioned, who would you trust on QB retention and development?  I'm thinking Milton is not the cause of pessimism, just a symptom.

Just in case you were…

Just in case you were getting optimistic about Harbaugh's tenure recently, a friendly reminder why you should not

Contact tracing is actually…

Contact tracing is actually a great example. Its not really working, and it's incredibly difficult (in many cases impossible) to do.  Is that the best usage of resources?

It's also wild that I have such influence in this country that my apparently "sneering dismissal" is a big factor in how a virus spreads and public officials' response.

A very scary statement …

A very scary statement "public health experts determine [what] is best for all."  There are very, very good reasons why public health experts do NOT determine policy directly.  Their motivations are not necessarily what is best for the public in general, and they are not directly elected.  This does not make them bad people.

A public health expert will nearly always choose the most conservative path, because their livelihood is rarely dependent upon being right or wrong - or even how the economy/school/department is doing.  Businesses, student athlete welfare, etc are not really considerations.  They will favor zero or near zero risk consistently.  Then the people actually in charge get to choose to follow those recommendations or not, based upon all the considerations.

Maybe the best thing to do is follow public expert advice, and maybe not.  But public health experts should NEVER determine that directly.

The guy who tested positive…

The guy who tested positive was not in contact with his team.  Both coaches were in communication about the situation,  and Purdue tested everyone else by request from Michigan.  Like Ace, next time get the full story before letting your feelings get the better of you.

I said the “insanity” is a result of one person - the AD, not all sides - making terrible decisions.  If you want to include “the administration” in there......ok, sure.
From that one person’s bad decisions, most results seem rational.  This is exactly Brian’s point as well.  The D-coordinator will not be a great hire, because no great hire will  come into this situation.  This guy might be a great hire given the circumstances.  I agree that extending Harbaugh is also a bad decision.

The twitter craziness is also understandable because experts and non-experts are attempting to fill in an information gap, created by the AD.

Not sure how this is pure…

Not sure how this is pure insanity on al sides, though it certainly may appear that way.  Manuel is a full on disaster over the last month, and everything flows from that.  Fire Harbaugh end of season, this doesn’t happen.  Tell Harbaugh negotiations must be concluded a few days after the season and put your full confidence behind him, it’s at least not as bad.

Instead we half-heartedly endorse a coach who is like 80% certain to fail after letting it seem like coaching Michigan is a backup plan while our rivals get to dunk on us in celebration throughout the process.  Somebody send the AD to a public relations seminar.

More meta, but after one particularly rough OSU loss, the entire site turned pink with kittens.  It remains one of the funniest things I have ever seen on the internet, up there with school promotional video reviews from EDSBS (App State "Hot, Hot, Hot").  I think another time the site banner was the Hindenburg crash?  That's quite a while back so my memory is fuzzy.

Seth, for those interested…

Seth, for those interested in even more technical/neck sharpie learnin', where would you recommend?  After reading your analysis for a while, sometimes I see another pro/college team do something I recognize from one of your write ups.

Or, when I see a running play where (for example) a guard and tackle pull all the way across, I think "wonder what that is called?"  Is there some kind of football run encyclopedia somewhere?

Fully agreed.  Although…

Fully agreed.  Although recruiting as he has the last 18 months is pretty good given the results.

Just too many hits needed…

Just too many hits needed across the board.  While I appreciate the optimistic approach, the 20,000 foot view is new QB, 4 new OL, DTs must hit, New CB must hit, and moving Dax means 2nd safety needs a hit.  And if a single injury happens at DT, CB, or safety, yeah.  There are good reasons why many of these things should be ok, but we have a slightly above average to good coaching staff in addition to all that.

Great coaches get their teams to play with anyone more often than not, and our defense tends to get smashed more often than not when facing similar/greater talent.  And to prevent that the suggestion is Brown reinventing his defense, which is another big ask.  An overall record from 5-4 to 7-2 seems reasonable.
