Ohio State officially announces Mike Yurcich as new QB coach

Submitted by Wolverine0007 on January 3rd, 2019 at 3:00 AM

One day after OSU secures the Rose Bowl and caps off their 13-1 season, what do they do? They hire Mike Yurcich as their new QB coach/passing game coordinator.  I interpret that this means Day may be shifting away from the type of Urban Meyer offenses that rely more on QB's who can run but not throw in favor of more pro-style QB's.

And what do we do after we end the season with two major face plants? Nothing. Pep is still here along with all the uncertainty of whether Harbaugh is going to revamp the offense by bringing in an OC.

No, Bill Davis will be fired if they get Al Washington.  If they don’t get Al Washington, Bill Davis will still be fired.   Being the best man at Urbans wedding got Davis the job but he is absolutely not going to survive this offseason.  His only skill set is making 5* linebackers play like they belong in DIII.

I don't think this means they're aiming for more pro style QBs. It really just emphasizes OSU's transition to Air Raid offense. They're modernizing their offense which means they'll be that much harder to deal with. I think Don Brown will have to think of some new wrinkles to take care of what OSU is shelling out. Maybe look into playing zone more often.

Yes, not all passing offenses are created the same.

Ryan Day already told us what he's going to do, right in he first 10 minutes of his intro press conference.  He said "We are going to spread the field, and make the defense defend every single yard of it."

He's going full Big 12.  He's not going to play in a phone booth.

We better be able to keep up on offense.  No matter what our defense does, OSU is still going to score 30+.

UNACCEPTABLE!!!! HARBAUGH IS OVERRATED AND THE GAME HAS PASSED HIM BY! WONT MAKE NECESSARY CHANGES!

UNWILLING TO MAKE CHANGES TO BE ELITE LIKE BAME, CLEMSON, OSU!

I DESERVE MOAR WINS, I AM ENTITLED TO BETTER THAN THREE 10 WIN SEASONS IN 4 YEARS FROM A COACH PAID SUCH A SALARY...I DON'T CARE THAT HE INHERITED A SHIT STORM.

NO MORE APOLOGISTS.  I DESERVE VICTORIES AGAINST OSU AND THE PLAYOFFS, AND ANYBODY THAT DISAGREES HAS LOW STANDARDS.

PATHETIC THAT THE WHOLE OFFENSIVE STAFF WAS NOT FIRED AFTER THE LAST GAME...SABAN AND MEYER NEVER LOSE BIG GAMES!

UNACCEPTABLE!!!!

I would be surprised if Pep is still with the team by the start of spring practice. There's some wisps of smoke that he's sniffing around and/or being pushed out. Harbaugh has had good track record of repairing and addressing issues with his staff.

After Durkin left and he went out and looked for "the best DC available" which he flat out said was his only criteria when making the hire. He made it. He pushed out Drevno when it was clear he had dropped the ball in recruiting and developing talent and couldn't make it work with Frey. He brought in a guy who's widely considered one of the best O-lIne coaches in the country (Alabama has been in touch with Warriner this year, if you need more evidence).  He needed to pick up recruiting and brought in Al Washington (recruited Trente Jones, Kalil Branham in '20 class, Erick All) and Sherrone Moore (recruited Dax Hill, Mazi Smith, Keegan). Now everyone's freaking out that OSU might poach Washington.

Harbaugh is far from perfect, makes plenty of questionable decisions, and is sometimes slower to make changes (Drevno), but he's generally made the right staffing decisions. Give it a few weeks.  If Pep stays, which again I'd be surprised, they can still make changes to the offense. If he goes, you're looking at a new pass game coordinator which means a new system and a new learning curve, so it's not like that's gonna be an instant fix. It'll just make us feel better because we have a shiny new thing to crucify later when we don't like the product on the field.

Based on the agreement, it was a "mutual-parting" - he sure as hell didn't just quit for funsies. He didn't leave for another job - he wasn't picked up by USC until March 5th and there was no mention of USC in any of the "Drevno resigns" articles from late February.

If he quit under his contract he owed Michigan $150,000K unless he was taking a head coaching job. They didn't ask for the money and in fact paid him out a portion of his salary.

The 1%ers get richer.

BTW, we're a 1%er too.  But we keep all our money under the mattress and termites have eaten a lot of it.

This board cracks me up.  Most on here hate all these Twitter type news hounds that throw shit at the internet walls to see if it sticks and then come on here and do the same.  Whiffs of smoke, rumors, rumblings.  Throw enough false misleading shit out there and hope its somewhat right.

Wait, I got one.  Harbaugh has “apparently” lost the team.  There is grumblings of “lack of offensive innovation”.  Ummmm, I saw Tarik Black, or someone, on the sidelines, look disinterested.  There will be turnover this offseason.   Al Boges will take over for Pep.  We’re getting the band back together again.  Just what I heard anyway.  Brian Bosworth didn’t use steroids.

Am I doing this right?

Actually Harbaugh and Brown almost did lose the team. The team voted Devin Bush as captain for the Peach bowl. Harbaugh and Brown got pissed and overruled them making Chase the captain. There’s a reason why Chase wasn’t voted captain in the beginning of the year. The players didn’t vote for him

New coach, new staff. It’s not surprising Day wants to get his guys on the team. Not really the same as firing Pep. I’d like to see Pep replaced, but firing him just to fire him isn’t going to help. You need a better replacement.

Well, I was hoping that Michigan would get Yurich, so it does feel like a kick in the pants. He's fielded top 10 S and P offenses nearly every year at Oklahoma State. He would have been a similar hire to Brown as DC at Michigan. :(.

Big 12 vs SEC

Big 12 offense averaged 36.25 ppg and went 3-1 against them. SEC is known for their defense yet got shredded by the Big 12 offenses. Maybe, just maybe, Big 12 defense isn't bad. It's more likely that the Big 12 offense is so good by spreading them out and pass all over the field.

Look at Oklahoma, they put up 34 points on Alabama without breaking much of a sweat especially in the 2nd half. It's a good thing that Alabama got out to a big lead quickly or the game would've gotten more interesting

So you’re stating that Oklahoma was able to do what experts thought they could against Alabama. I guess it is easier for folks like you to ignore that Bama had just as much time to prepare for Murray and company, but that he made the Tide’s Top 2 defense look beatable is not inconsequential.

Sigh. They scored 14.4 point below their average ppg (48.4) against 'bama.  I'm saying their stats are inflated because of the defenses they are playing against, that's all. It took the best QB in the country to even get to 34.

'Bama held them to their second lowest point total on the year (Army 28 (?!?!)).  All i'm saying is I wouldn't look at a high scoring team's OC in the Big 12 and immediately anoint him the savior of Michigan football.

Believe whatever stat you want.
