MC5 broke a lot of ground in rock and punk that other bands used to become much more famous. They were almost too innovative to be truly understood in their heyday but almost every truly great rock and punk band (Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, Ramones) cite them as a major influence. By comparison Def Leppard is MTV eye-candy.

I share the sentiment about it feeling not exclusive. I also wonder what will happen in 40 years given the lack of popularity in what I’d consider rock and roll and the rise of electro pop and hip hop. What rock bands have the cultural influence that those of the 70s and 80s had? You look at the top rock charts in billboard and it’s not very inspiring.

I also enjoy Greta Van Fleet. I think you just have to take them at face value. They aren't pushing the envelope or doing anything super imaginative, but neither is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (and those are just fine). My hope for them is that they grow and evolve and do their own thing. Kinda like how the first RUSH album is just a Led Zeppelin knock off.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the next big thing.  Current music tastes and the current state of the industry basically make it impossible.  Nobody wants bands to play local bars or parties anymore; they just want DJs.

I tried my hand at playing in a college band almost 20 years ago, and even then nobody wanted live music.  There's nothing enticing young musicians to really go for it anymore.

One of my favorites. Pyromania or On Through the Night were often playing on my Walkman as a kid. Yes, I’m old.

I have tremendous respect for the way the band handled Rick Allen’s accident/recovery. Great to see them recognized now.

‘83 was really when I started listening to what I wanted, and not just the 8 tracks/radio that my mom was listening to. That’s how I got to Pyromania. My cousin had the older stuff (OTTN and HND), so I borrowed them.

I liked both but definitely OTTN better. I’m probably one of the few who does; the band doesn’t even play anything from OTTN in concert.

I listen to a variety of music. I have spotify and Iheartradio. Sometimes I have a hankering for classic rock, so I'll search for "Pink Floyd Radio" or "Rolling Stones Radio" and of course you geta mix of things. For some sick perverted reason, along with the "classic" band you type into the search bar, these apps will play bands such as Poison, Def Leppard, Motley Crue etc. It's absolutely horrible. I suppose the computer is not discerning enough to make a distinction between The Stones and Poison, but God what a shitty thing when "Every Rose has a Thorn" comes on. Or "Wild Side." And then it's in your head for hours.

Neither Whitney Houston nor Janet Jackson are rock, my main issue is non-rock musicians getting in.  Rock at its core is guitar, lyrics, rebellion, etc.  Playing your own instruments...  I digress.

Obviously they're just letting anybody in these days, he sniffed. Def Leppard--they couldn't even get into their spandex pants by themselves, let alone play their instruments.

I mean, this is just not factually accurate.  I am no Def Leppard fan.  The last time I thought about Def Leppard I was in the like sixth grade, but they are an actual rock and roll band with "instruments" and such.  They were fairly influential of a lot of different styles of music in the 80s both in terms of the development of US heavy metal and metal cross-over success and had a lot of touring success for over a decade.  We may not really enjoy them, that is fair, but they are not out of place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They did at the time, though.  All kinds of music evolve but are still considered under the umbrella in which they were originally consumed.  The Beatles hardly sound like "Rock and Roll" as one would describe it now but they are certainly a Rock and Roll band.
