So, say the offense is a repeat of this year - averages 37 ppg on the way to a last game battle with OSU for the division win, a trip to Indy, and realistic thoughts of a playoff berth.

Your last straw will be snapped and you'll be finished with JH.

Okay, then.  Sounds legit...  UNACCEPTABLE!!!

They had a 3* true FR catch 2 TDs and block a punt in the game.

I think they’ll be in pretty good shape at WR.

They get Austin Mack back, basically a mirror image of Tarik Black.  Victor is back, Olave the FR is back and they have 2 bluechippers incoming and a pair who redshirted this year

Hartline is an upgrade at WR coach over wifebeater.

bigger question is QB.  Martell is unproven.  Highly rated but hasn’t really played much.

I would hope so, but I don't know.  Just making the point that 37 ppg isn't so bad.  Certainly not bad enough to move on from Harbaugh and find someone else - as the OP opined.

I agree that better use could certainly be made for the weapons and tools this offense has (and I've said so repeatedly since that thing).  But taking the offense we had this year, would you (or anyone else) fire Harbaugh over it?  That is the implication OP was making.  Good for him - he has every right to believe so.  I don't share his assessment...

Um, people forget that our offense only scored 19 points going into the 4th quarter against Ohio State this year.

And 6 of those 19 points were from within the OSU 10 yard line after a turnover.

So, our offense basically scored only 13 points on its own by the 4th quarter.  Meanwhile, Ohio State had already scored 41 points.

Most of our "impressive" final offensive total of 39 points was after the game was already way out of hand.

Look at the Ohio State offensive scores when they play us over the last decade.  They are going to score points.  We need to have an offense that can keep pace.

In no way did our "averages 37 ppg" offense come close to doing that.

Agreed.  If Shea comes back (looks pretty likely) then we have the horses to be a dominant offense that should put up points early and often.

This year we were content with body punches / yards with the expectation that defenses would eventually wear out.  That doesn't work as well if the other team is moving the ball against us and keeping its defense fresh. We need to have the ability to win multiple ways (quick strike or grind-it-out).

Right.   Bench the guy who just won 10-11 games, was 3rd team All Big Ten, and has shown great leadership.  Shea would be the 1st returning starter at QB in the Harbaugh era.   I am excited to see a jump in production from an already great year.

McCaffery looks good and will get every opportunity to have a great career ay Michigan and likely the NFL.  His time will come.

I don't think the importance of this can be overstated.  Next years Oline will be one of the best in B1G. Runyan, Bredeson, Ruiz and Onwenu.  Got a couple potential road graders in the wings to take JBB's spot. Things are really falling into place for offense to be elite next year.

Going to need the offense to step up next year, as defense likely not as strong with Gary, Bush and Winovich all exiting. The replacements are good but not yet All-B1G caliber.  Also, DT takes a depth hit with Mone and Lawrence graduating.  However, with Hinton and Smith coming in we should be better at DT by mid-season ... counting on Dwumford and Solomon to take off in development.  On the backend if we lose L.Hill and Long, things could get a bit dicey for the first time in Brown's tenure.  Hawkins, D.Hill and Metullus in a safety rotation ... hopefully D.Hill can add some cover speed to the group.

With a very solid OL, Shea coming back and we start to feature our elite WRs more can we get to #10 in scoring offense? That is about 41 ppg

Odd statistical finish to the year:

  • Offense @ #19 in scoring / #44 in total offense per game
  • Defense @ #12 in scoring / #1 in total defense per game

Strong run blocking offensive line, weak pass protecting line, new QB in a new system, young unproven WR, stud returning HB.   Of course the offense was designed to bring along the OL slowly and keep them out of obvious passing situations.   They still are not good as a 5 man unit by themselves pass blocking.

The offense will be incredible next year as Shea matures with the weapons he has.   Look for even less but more efficient passing as we jump on teams early then downshift into bleeding the clock in the 2nd half of blowouts.

I think the RPO's will be the difference.   They were slowly working them in.  I think Shea missed 2 good passing opportunities and gave the handoff vs OSU, but he will have it perfected by next year.

I really hope this is not the case.  If the teams in the playoffs are any indication, and if JH learned anything from the last OSU game, we need to throw the ball more often in our base offense and rep that a lot so that we can keep pace with the other high scoring offenses around the league.  Nothing wrong with running, but it seems clear we can't count on beating the top defensive teams, including OSU, with a run first mentality and only throwing on 2 & 3rd down after running into a wall has only gained us 2-4 yards.

I think we need a RB with some vision.  Higdon was good (great by many measures).........and from all appearances a great captain.  Still, he was not "electric" when he touched the ball.  I am probably nitpicking but with a capable OL and a great RB we could be dangerous.  I just watched OSU and Georgia over the weekend and it seems like we are just a slight talent level (and some coaching adjustments) off from a formidable offense.

I know this may be an unpopular take, but I agree.  Higdon was a very solid RB.  But, he lacked the electricity that our running game needed.  He generally got what the line gave him, plus some good YAC, but he wasn't the type of guy who would take over a game like some of our RB from the 1990s.  I am hopeful that one of the young guys coming in can fill that role.  I know that Harbaugh likes the "body blows" that a guy like Higdon delivers, but touchdowns on 65 yard runs are pretty good for winning, as well.

Higdon was more of a one cut back.  He had great breakaway speed once he got past the first line, but he was not shifty and great at finding holes.  Evans seems better at that, but lacks the breakaway speed.  If only we could combine them.  I think Evans will be the #1, but Charbonet looks really good and I'm guess he splits snaps come mid-season.

Attempting to make Chris Evans into an RB1, in-between-the-tackles runner...may have shortened my life by years this season.

I hate it and if I ever see Evans run directly at a LB again I may scream. Kamara from the Saints is an analogous type of runner (except I think Kamara is tougher)

Byeeeeeee!!!!  Listen he made some huge plays, had multiple pick 6's, and overall was a solid tackler and contributor on the nations #1 defense.  Also, I can't name who his replacement would be since Kinnel is moving on too.  Plenty of reasons for us to want him back.  But MAN was he bad in pass coverage and also took some HORRIBLE angles this year because of his lack of speed.  I truly think we'll be better off if he leaves so it forces us to get more speed on the field.

Did we have two safeties named Metellus this year? Because you were obviously watching the other one.

The safety I was watching was fast, played like a safety (not the CB you obviously want), and our defense took a noticeable step backwards whenever he left the field. Should be good for mid rounds in the draft.
