B1G East Division Co-Champions

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on November 27th, 2018 at 2:46 PM

Unfortunately, it's just co. But Michigan did win their first division championship in program history.

With both Michigan and OSU at 8-1, both are declared East Division Champions with the tiebreaker obviously going the way it did. This is per the B1G rules. Their website had a release up after we beat Indiana that stated we clinched at least a share of the title.

B1G record books have a table of division titles as well.

Michigan will receive a B1G East Division trophy for its accomplishment.

Yes, what happened was very VERY disappointing last weekend, but look at the whole body of work this season.

Is this all that different from 2000 when Michigan, Purdue and Northwestern all tied for the Big Ten title? Michigan lost to both and gave up a ton of points and lost the Rose Bowl tiebreaker to Purdue.

Jack Harbaugh even had some words to say about the title on The Harbaugh Podcast, saying a banner should be put up.

And before OSU trolls laugh, well..........they celebrated theirs in 2015 so hard they made t-shirts for it:

We're finally on the board with a division title and let's use it as a stepping stone to an OUTRIGHT Division Championship in 2019. Go Blue

I'm so mad right now.  I have been telling myself that everything is all good for 72 hours but everything is not all good and it took a BIG East Division trophy without a BIG title game for me to really understand how pissed I am.

I have been able to put the various disappointments over the years into different compartments fairly well but I can't find anywhere to put Saturday.

If it was MSU celebrating an Eastern Division Co-Championship, MGoBlog would be on fire with sarcasm about Sparty participation trophies.

After getting our asses handed to us, this is a bit pathetic.

Well you know what they say about ties? It's like kissing your sister. No one wins.

I don't want to diminish the team's accomplishments, but I wish the conference didn't do this. Just feels really hollow. OSU won the tiebreaker. They won the division. That's it.

So to recap in the past 24 hours we've had threads created on the following:

  • Hey we still got a chance to make the final four
  • Should we move to the B1G West?
  • Hey we tied for the eastern conference title

If our goal was to provide fodder for the good folks at 11 Warriors and the other OSU blogs to laugh at us even more than Saturday's results yielded then I think we've succeeded wildly.  And, FWIW, based on these jewels I think I miss the Hawt Taek threads.

Exactly.  Nobody needs to jump up and down with excitement over this and I doubt the players would.  They didn't earn a Big Ten Championship and are disappointed, but they earned this when they beat Indiana.  OSU could have won it outright.  They just needed to spend some of that Michigan game planning time on Purdue.

You already posted this nonsense. Most people don’t give a damn about being co-division champs, especially after being demolished by OSU.

I made a post when we clinched at least a share. Now that it's been determined that (sadly) it's a co-championship, I made this post which is completely different in its content from the other one.

You and other fans may not care, but you don't know that the players don't care. Winovich liked and retweeted a tweet about the trophy and the fact this team was the first division championship team here.

His first year we were 5-7 and lost to Rutgers, Maryland and Minnesota. He's been through some shit here and has helped turn it around tenfold. I'm sure he and the other 5th year seniors care.

Michigan is clearly the second best team in the B1G. We're good enough to beat the other good (not nationally elite) teams when they're slightly down, but not so good that we don't lose to them when they're atypically good.

That's Harbaugh's accomplishment after four years at Michigan. I think it's pretty good given that he inherited a dogshit program that lost to RUTGERS. It's not where I thought we would be, but it's still a good job done by Harbaugh.

It's easy to be pissed at Harbaugh for not getting Michigan to be elite, but damn did he ever walk into a dumpster fire.

MSU used to light us up like OSU just did. Shithole little brother filled with players that Michigan didn't look twice at. We were in a bad state.

Now Harbaugh needs to reevaluate and do what's necessary to make that next jump.

He definitely came in at a tough time.  OSU and MSU were both at their programs' respective ceilings - OSU was defending national champion and MSU coming off a NY6 Bowl win.  ND also had its best coach since Holtz (even if Kelly has had some bad individual seasons).

A decade earlier, OSU had Tressel (very good but not quite Meyer), MSU had John L. Smith and ND had Charlie Weis.

A few years before that (2000), OSU had John Cooper, MSU had Bobby Williams and ND had Bob Davie.  Imagine Harbaugh getting to face those guys.

Hard to have perspective after Saturday but this says it well.  We have a top 10 coach, and when we don't lose 2 QB's during the season we're a top 10ish team.  The roster will basically 100% have turned over since Harbaugh arrived at the start of next year and I'm excited to see where the program goes next.

So, they gave us a parking meter to celebrate, um, whatever it is we're supposed to celebrate after Saturday?

Does it count down the minutes until the Wolverines can win a real trophy?

Yeah, I'm passing on this one. I hope Harbaugh does, too. Rather than putting it in Schembechler Hall, they can nail it to a post outside the Law Quad and laugh as exhausted students try stuffing quarters in it.

Ugh. This screams "participation trophy" to me. I get the pride over shared conference titles in the pre-divisions era, particularly the impressive 5-year streak from '88 to '92. But the conference and college football have changed dramatically since then. And the fact osu made & marketed merchandise in '15 doesn't make it okay. Hell, that seems more Sparty than anything. We are not the East Division representative in the Conference Championship Game. There should be no trophy. The fact that one exists doesn't justify any argument for such a triviality.

Looking forward to cheering on the boys in whatever bowl comes our way and anticipating even better success in '19.

Can people put aside their feelings for just a few minutes and recognize that this does have meaning for the guys who worked for these victories?  I mean, you don't have to like it, maybe just refrain from crapping on someone else's accomplishments.

A Co-Division Championship doesn't mean anything if we don't play for a Conference Championship.

That being said, Harbaugh has had the team playing OSU with a division title on the line 2 out of 4 years (3 if we count Co-Division titles, which we shouldn't). That is a damn fine job by someone who inherited a .500 program coming off its 2nd worst season in 40 years.

I think we all expect to be 10-2 or better from here on out with Harbaugh and I think we need to appreciate how far that is from the days of Rich Rod and Hoke. It wasn't good enough this year, but we are light years further than we were at the beginning of 2015.

Good post. Hard to keep perspective after Saturday but I told a friend last week that that's all we can ask for. Just keep putting yourself in position to win championships and eventually it'll break your way. Seems like we're long overdue, but this thing is on track.

Michigan deserves the championship as much as osu.  I only won 6 games and still curb stomped Urban.

Michigan lost to a 1 loss team

Ohio State lost two a 6-6 team

I'm not very smart but that's one loss each and Michigans loss is much better that osu's loss

Where can I pick up my:

“We’re co-divisional champs!

..but gave up 62 points to the other co-divisional champs who get to play in the actual champ” t-shirt?
