I solely stated Davis as a "project" (being a 3-star and having the athletic limitations in high school that you mention). I didn't view Chatman, Donnal, or Wilson as projects. They were all 4-stars and generally touted recruits. I simply mentioned the former pair as more significant recruiting misses for Beilein than a 3-star project coming out of a small high school in rural Michigan. I love JB, but no one is perfect (except Nick Saban apparently).

Loved it. A highlight in a weird, (mostly) ugly game.

12/10/2018 - 2:52pm From an azcentral article…

From an azcentral article this past summer:

"..the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority paid for a complete upgrade of that tray during the off-season. The original waterproofing and drainage systems of the field tray were replaced, along with the sod and root-zone mix. The new system comes equipped with leak-detection technology."

Growing and maintaining perfect sod can be fickle, especially in a climate like Arizona. Maybe the root system was adversely affected by disease. I'm sure the grounds crew is beside themselves in frustration that such an expensive, high-tech system could produce such a rough result.

It's bermuda, so it wasn't dead. Just dormant.

12/10/2018 - 2:27pm Meh, I think Beilein has…

Meh, I think Beilein has always viewed Austin Davis as a project. And let's face it, "projects" don't pan out much more often than they do. TBQH, he's not nearly as significant of a JB recruiting miss as Mark Donnal or Kam Chatman. I have been cheering for Davis since he stepped on campus, as he's from an area of Michigan that a large portion of my dad's relatives are from. I love a good small town Michigan kid success story. I'm pretty sure JB will be using the next 3 games as one last coaching opportunity to help Davis gain some much-needed confidence. Otherwise, it's onto Brandon Johns.

This is so comically ironic and apropos of the cultural, social, and political era in which we live.

My hand is raised (for the banked 3 going in at the buzzer). I've come to the conclusion that strange things tend to happen in Evanston, both at Welsh-Ryan and the neighboring football field. A periodic blowout sprinkled in both sports, but a whole lot of bizarre facepalm stuff on most occasions. Relieved we somehow escaped with a W.

"I’d listen to a 45-minute pod of them discussing Antietam or some such shit."

Guffaw. Kudos, Alex. Those are the kinds of hidden gems that make this blog so..damn..good. Fantastic TWO, gents. Terrific stuff. Hard not to be absolutely stoked about this team's potential. I don't see a loss potential 'til .. (I will shut up now).

11/30/2018 - 5:25pm Looking very forward to this…

Looking very forward to this game. The Purdue battles were must-see-tv last season, even the loss. On another note, there is no way John Beilein is able to retain Luke Yaklich beyond this season, right? Regardless, I'm going to enjoy this season like a case of fine French Boudreaux.

That is an incredibly bizarre photo; I wish to un-see it.

11/30/2018 - 5:04pm Outside of a program…

Outside of a program blatantly struggling and its head coach being on the hot seat (witness the final seasons of Rodriguez and Hoke and the respective impacts on those recruiting classes), I don't subscribe to the narrative of one game affecting recruiting in any impactful manner. That is certainly not the current climate in Ann Arbor. We're still a program on the rise. Maybe a head-to-head battle like Zach Harrison might take a detrimental hit due to the debacle last Saturday. If he wants to come to Michigan, he'll be in the class.

11/29/2018 - 11:19am What was truly amazing is…

What was truly amazing is that I didn't really hear that particular whistle watching on TV either. I can't imagine how much louder it was actually inside the arena. Great stuff. Need an equally participatory crowd on Saturday as well. Let's open the conference season with a bang against a really good opponent. The Purdue games last season were epic.

This is a great post, matty blue. I wish more people could/would buy into this perspective. It's ALL silly (bread & circuses), so embrace the silliness.

11/29/2018 - 11:03am Would definitely agree to…

Would definitely agree to try more for corner than directly behind the basket. But that being said, I've sat in the latter at Crisler a few times, and they're fine. I think the only "bad" seats are the last row or two of the upper bowl.

11/28/2018 - 11:46pm That was simply super fun to…

That was simply super fun to watch. Only nitpick was the FT shooting. This team is fully capable of making a similar run as last season.

11/28/2018 - 10:30pm Once again, the free throw…

Once again, the free throw shooting is .. a concern. Finish 6 or 7 missed layups/dunks & shoot FTs adequately, and we're up by 15. Love the overall poise, though. Could have easily gotten rattled a time or two, but nope.

11/28/2018 - 4:13pm This will always be a…

This will always be a divisive, controversial issue in the fan base. I grew up loving the Notre Dame rivalry, as it was early in the season (if not the outright season opener like this year), and it was generally the first big national spotlight game. I still love the rivalry and attended the game in South Bend this year (and had a fabulous time despite the loss). I know guys who pay a crap ton of dough for really nice season tickets at the Big House. They want to see good matchups, not three MAC teams. I think the scheduling is fine. Notre Dame or similar (Washington in '20-'21), a middle tier traditional program (SMU this year, Army in '19), and a MAC cupcake is nicely balanced OOC scheduling.

The huge problem is the much mentioned off-kilter tilt of odd/even years imbalance. I still have no f'ing clue why we had to play those back-to-back games in East Landfill ('13-'14). So moronic on the part of Delany & Co. And then the salt in the wound of having to resume the Notre Dame rivalry down there after playing there in '14. A condition of resumption should have been a game in Ann Arbor, even if they had to wait a few seasons for schedules to clear. The MSU & OSU imbalance does not appear to be getting fixed before '26, as conference schedules are already out through '25. This is a maddening issue.

11/28/2018 - 12:32pm We're likely in the extreme…

We're likely in the extreme minority, but I'm with you on this. Would really love a chance to see our boys play in the Rose Bowl. An ideal game time on New Year's Day for viewing. Classic Pac 12 matchup. The other options appear almost nauseating to me in terms of spin cycle boredom. The Peach Bowl at noon on the 29th (a hardcore 10:00 am Mountain - guh)? No thanks. Another tiresome bowl matchup with Florida? Pass. A zero-to-gain matchup with UCF? Ugh. I'd happily settle for a Fiesta Bowl bid vs. LSU, but that is seeming increasingly unlikely. Can't wait for Sunday evening for all of this to be officially announced.

In light of various game times, at least things will be relatively settled by kickoff in Indy, since I don't wish to be pulling for the bucknuts in any way/shape/form.

11/27/2018 - 11:10pm Damn, really good game…

Damn, really good game between Wisconsin and NC State too. Nice late comeback by the Badgers after hanging around within spitting distance most of the 2nd half. Doesn't look quite like the Ethan Happ one-man band of last season.

11/27/2018 - 10:38pm Super entertaining game…

Super entertaining game. March in November. I thought Izzo was going to have a heart attack when he was bitching at Loyer late in the game. His face was an especially dangerous shade of red. Seeing Sparty lose this was particularly enjoyable, as they seemed to get a bunch of chippy foul calls go their way in the last 10 minutes. The Josh Langford foul line shenanigans to close things out were downright hee-larious. Classic 'Sparty..NO!'

11/27/2018 - 4:59pm Beautifully played.

Beautifully played.

11/27/2018 - 3:08pm Ugh. This screams …

Ugh. This screams "participation trophy" to me. I get the pride over shared conference titles in the pre-divisions era, particularly the impressive 5-year streak from '88 to '92. But the conference and college football have changed dramatically since then. And the fact osu made & marketed merchandise in '15 doesn't make it okay. Hell, that seems more Sparty than anything. We are not the East Division representative in the Conference Championship Game. There should be no trophy. The fact that one exists doesn't justify any argument for such a triviality.

Looking forward to cheering on the boys in whatever bowl comes our way and anticipating even better success in '19.

11/27/2018 - 12:43pm NBA Commissioner Adam Silver…

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is already on record stating that the one-and-done rule is nearing its end. IIRC they're discussing 2021 or 2022, so impossible to determine at this point if the rollback will affect Bates or not. Regardless, always exciting when the #1 overall player in a class is from Michigan. Super rare. When was the last time it happened? Webber? (I don't recall if Battier was a #1 overall.)

I'm fully in favor of the mods maintaining loose trigger fingers with the nuclear codes after these 2 most recent threads.

Great post, particularly "I pulled the emotional ripcord early." I wish I could have. I simply sat stunned at a friend's place, clinging to some faint, faraway hope. Upon the Parris Campbell jet sweep dagger, I began collecting my things and said my thank-you's and goodbyes. I do not recall watching the extra point being kicked. I had already seen enough.

Meh, life goes on. Will dust off and cheer them on in whatever bowl game comes our way.

Thank you for mentioning this. I assumed I was losing my mind when I mentioned to the friend with whom I was watching that Chase looked like crap after he made that great play (TFL?). Pale, pasty, totally devoid of any color in his face.

Dude, that's an awful shank of his name. It's McCaffrey. I usually don't care - but had to call out that one. Sheesh.

So 62 is not only the most by osu in the history of the rivalry, but also the most points we've ever given up in a regulation game?! Double ugh.

Was he drunk while "composing" that tweet? Rambling gibberish. This is not a good look in a myriad of ways.

11/20/2018 - 4:42pm Absolutely. Which makes the…

Absolutely. Which makes the false narrative of RCMB and the rest of their delusional fan base that the media is "out to get them" and is heavily bias toward UM even more nonsensically jarring. Simply a cesspool of immorality at MSU these days. Glad to hear the pair of newly elected BoT members want Engler out. Absolutely absurd choice from the beginning. They need someone from outside the green-tinted echo chamber.

11/20/2018 - 3:08pm "Also, we feel bad for…

"Also, we feel bad for celebrities in Malibu having their 14th house burn down now? Interesting."

If the above is to be construed as a "joke," don't quit your day job. Weak sauce.

11/20/2018 - 11:12am Indeed. I'm always baffled…

Indeed. I'm always baffled by this take. The median household income in Paradise (the town which was obliterated by the Camp Fire) is about $32,000. California is a massive state in terms of geography, population, and varying demographics. Wildfires are equally-opportunity life-destroyers.

11/19/2018 - 5:06pm And yet they STILL had an…

And yet they STILL had an opportunity to get things right after time expired with a quick conference and placement of time back on the clock. I have never seen a worse officiating crew than John O'Neill's in the 4 decades I've been paying close attention to college football. It's pathetic and an embarrassment to the conference as a whole.

11/16/2018 - 7:19pm Beat me to it. Mike "Kuato"…

Beat me to it. Mike "Kuato" DeBord is a rather gross thought. I need to go look at puppy and kitten videos now.

11/02/2018 - 4:30pm Booing Chris Webber? Really?…

Booing Chris Webber? Really?!! If a smattering of fans present at Michigan Stadium tomorrow dislike him, I hope/wish they'd simply stay silent.

Gosh, this is such water under the bridge that emptied into the river that emptied into the ocean many years ago. Hell, black athletic socks went out of style and then came back in style during that span. That's a friggin' entire generation. I wish people would simply move on with their lives. I hope C-Webb gets a very warm reception.

Bill Hader is brilliant, isn't he? Stefon is one of the most hilarious recurring SNL characters of the past decade or so. Absolutely knee-slapping good in Superbad, Pineapple Express, and Adventureland. Simply a tremendously funny dude. On a winter snowstorm weekend, I'm going to rent a bunch of Bill Hader movies I haven't yet seen.

10/24/2018 - 7:17pm "Shea is tremendous at…

"Shea is tremendous at executing the ball fake."

Except that single occasion last week whereby he bungled the handoff to Higdon. Pretty sure that was mostly his fault. But mistakes happen. I just wish it wouldn't have happened on the road in East Lansing during BPONE DEFCON 2. However, the sample size is approaching a level at which we can safely say that he's becoming pretty damn good at executing it.
