OSU Snowflakes - The Defense

This will be the thread for hot takes and snowflakes regarding the defense and defensive playcalling versus Ohio State.

Here’s the game plan to beating Michigan’s defense, with 100% accuracy.

1) double team the ends and make the DT’s play one on one. Our defensive tackles are people shaped bags of wet dogshit masquerading as football players. I never want to hear Dwumfour hype ever again.

2) because the line can’t generate pressure we will bring LB’s on blitzes and leave our shittiest LB back, ie Devin Gil.

3) either throw to the departed LB space or just target our weakest DB on an island

over. And over. And over again.

OSU targeted weaknesses. They targeted Watson and burned him again and again. When Gil was in, they targeted him, They got running backs iso'd on Bush. I wish our offense could or would do the same.

I just think our dedication to man is too easily attacked by top level telent.

Skill on offense will beat skill on defense in today’s game.  The days of winning with defense are all but gone in CFB.

Good teams will find a way to score, no matter how good we are against average teams.

Yes, the defense did not have a good day.  But I blame the coaching and offensive play calling (pun intended) helped the osu offense.  The defense held them to negative yards 2 of their first 4 possessions.  And held them to field goals twice inside the 10, BEFORE the game got out of hand. And once they had confidence, it was over.

If the playcalling on offense wasn't so horrendous, the game would have stayed close, the intensity level would have remained high and the defense would have made a couple of stops.  I don't blame the defense as much as the crap playcalling on the offensive side.  If Harbaugh doesn't change this, nothing will truly get better.

We had way too much talent on this team.  I think as a person Meyer is scum but if he has this Michigan talent, he wins the B1G easy and goes to CFP.  Harbaugh has to acknowledge that he has to change some things.  His huge ego is great in a lot of ways for Michigan football.  But winning most of your games and losing to osu is not acceptable.

I think we can safely say that Ryan Day owns Don Brown.

There was an article linked in a thread this week that explained how the two have a long history together, from both coaching at UMASS on opposite sides of the ball, to facing each other on other teams in the east.

Day did his homework and exploited the weaknesses, while Don Brown just tried his usual blitzing schemes.

Day is probably Urban's future sucessor.

I don't know I just think against this buc's offense you need a cover 3 or something. You should have 3 guys good enough deep next year who can master that. I'd shoot for something like that.

The PSU defense actually played OSU very well earlier this season. Many of us felt that was a good sign that our defense would be able to shut OSU down.

A fan of PSU came on here and posted that we won't be able to contain OSU like the Nittany Lions did.

He said PSU is really good at playing some strong zone defense and Michigan is mostly man to man and probably aren't as good with using zone defense as PSU.

I guess that PSU fan was right.

Even NFL level corners can't live on an island if the pass rush vanishes.

Our pass rush was essentially non-existent in the time allowed by their offense.

Our only hope is that Haskins goes NFL this year. But, there will be another reason we lose next year.

To me the lack of pressure was due to OSU never calling a playcall that did not get the ball out in 3 seconds or more. There would have been pressure (and was) anytime Haskins held on for more than 3. They were clearly planning on quick passes all game.

The defense was very predictable in its coverage schemes. Haskins appeared to know exactly where to throw it on every single play. The presnap reads were telling them who would be matched up on who and they picked on the right defenders all day long. Kinnel, Gil, Watson.

They had a plan to expose people in our man coverage and we never seemed to offer a look that Haskins had not memorized on film.

Kind of ridiculous if you ask me.

And while the injuries hurt, it was not going to matter. We did not make them change their gameplan at all.

Our strength on offense and defense all season has been to show one look and do something else.

Either OSU completely figured it out on both sides or we simply did not offer enough looks.

Everyone keeps mentioning this three second rule.  Three seconds is WAY too long to get pressure.  The QB is never going to need 3 seconds to let a route develop unless its a deep shot, which is a small percentage of the throws in a game.  Haskins had all. day.  The whole season we were seeing pressure from Winovich, Uche, Gary (although he rarely got home), and Bush basically immediately after the snap.  It seemed today like they were running into the chests of the Olinemen rather than into gaps.  Every single snap they were getting stood up.  Its like they forgot how to play.  Their Oline didn't suddenly become Alabama after giving up pressure to every other team in the Big Ten.  Our guys lost their minds.  In a bad way.

I just watched Purple Face Kelly's D adjust in the 2nd half to USC Qb hitting 19 of 23 with quick routes. Dropped guys into coverage 7-10 yards in passing lanes and nearly got picks. Also, disrupted the USC offense because the QB knew they had adjusted to his bread and butter.

DB needs to watch that tape

Welp Brohm has reaffirmed his commitment to Purdue and Ohio State put on a nice show for Harrison.  I anticipate coaching up more three stars on the defensive line and not getting any push for years to come. At a certain point you have to stop scheming to win and just have the talent and athleticism to win.  OSU recruits a 1-3 new 4.5-5 star defensive linemen every single year and it showed today.  When the chips are down it boils down to who's better one on one.  I'd say at least we had Gary, and I love the guy, very disruptive 11 games out of the year, but like it or not I don't remember a single impact play he made.  The offense put up more than enough points to win.  The defensive performance was just absolutely baffling.

I know I’m beating a dead horse here. But it’s been 6 hours since the game ended and I’m still in shock.

I keep thinking this is a dream I wake up from.   I can’t believe I witnessed this defense get zero pressure on Haskins.  Like, not even a hint of pressure to make him even shuffle his feet.   How is that fucking possible?  Gary, Uche, Paye, Chase?? Not one time did any of them shed a block and get to the QB.

This was an absolutely awful defensive performance. Just pure shit. Don Brown should punch himself full force in the nuts once for each point OSU scored.

This would be the ultimate disappointment for JH and staff if we look like crap vs. Georgia in a NY6 bowl, have players sit out, and play lame.

I hope leaders step up starting tomorrow. Chase we know we can count on. Rashan - the NFL wants guys like Brandon Graham who step up in the BIG GAMES like he did in SB vs. Brady.

The toughest thing is, Harbaugh went and bought probably the best DC in CFB and there's so much talent on defense and they still got lit up for 62.  I really don't know what else Harbaugh could do with that.

I mean, did Don Brown interview for the Maryland job this week?  Seems like the only explanation.

Our DTs have been average at best all year. Kemp made a real nice play on a 3rd down play today but his impact is few and far in between. Mone is just a space eater who really can’t be put in the game vs teams like this. Let’s hope Solomon is full go for next year and Dwumfour can at least be a scratch player when it comes to stopping the run.

DEs had a rough go today. Tough to get to the QB when he’s in the gun and the ball is out of his hand in 2.5 seconds. With Gary and Chase gone we will se a big drop off next year.

LBs were put in a bad position based on scheme. Gil is not very good at anything and he’s getting Bolden treatment. Just like there was no logical reason Bolden played over Gedeon, there’s no logical reason Gil plays over Ross. It might be time to reconsider the Viper position. I think Hudson brings more as a true safety next year than where he is playing now.

Our top 2 CBs played okay. Hopefully they are both back because after them we have an unproven Ambry and a mystery after that. Watson has been a nice program guy who’s had some solid moments this year but let’s be real, a guy like him never sees the field at OSU.

Safety play has been meh all year. Metellus has kind of maxed out his ability, and has been solid this year. Kinnel is just so poor in coverage it hurts. Whether it be Dax, Hawkins, or Woods taking his spot next year, I don’t expect to see any drop off.

Next years defense will not be as talented as this year’s. And that scares me big time.

If all the expected (Gary and Bush) and the 50-50s (Hill & Long) depart this is the defense we will most likely put out vs MTSU based on the players we have returning and seen thus far

DE: Paye

DT: Kemp/Dwumfour

NT: Solomon

DE: Hutchinson/Uche

LB: Gil/Anthony

LB: Ross

Viper: Hudson

CB: Thomas

CB: Sims

FS: Hawkins/Woods/JKP

SS: Metellus

We thought our defense was better than it is.  At least we found some things out.

We have a few weaknesses.  Need better safeties overall.  Dax Hill come on down.  Need our DTs to develop, hope they can.

Winovich is a warrior, really appreciate his career, but he wasn't 100% today.

Rashan Gary... his career is a disappointment.  He had a few really good games his whole career.

The lack of pass pressure was shocking.

It also seemed like defenders were almost turning down hits on Haskins, when it is well known that he is far less effective after he's been hit a few times.

Where was Trap coverage?  The inability to change up with effective zone coverage (which became necessary when it became obvious that Michigan couldn't cover Buckeye receivers in man-to-man without using lots of hands and the officials were calling those), was another problem. I know he can't stand Quarters coverage, but at the very least Don Brown needs some zone-blitz packages to get more eyes on the ball and reduce YAC against teams with better talent.

Michigan4Life

November 25th, 2018 at 8:10 AM ^

Don Brown did call for a trap coverage but OSU had answers for it baiting trap coverage and hit em over the top. OSU offensive staff knew the adjustment by Don Brown and had every answers for it. They knew what they're going to do and still managed to adjust without changing the core of their offense.  You have to tip your hat on the OSU coaching staff for putting together a great gameplan.

Also, OSU OL was the MVP of the game as well as Weber/Dobbins for being able to protect Haskins when they stayed in when the blitz came.

I refuse to believe that all of a sudden our defense is bad. If we played OSU again today after what we know, I doubt they are beating us like they did.

What's important to understand here is:

1. What exactly happened and why.

2. How do you counter what happened.

In the future, every team we play will study this game.  Meyer did his homework.  Nothing has really changed on our defense the last three years...

Is there any evidence Don Brown was at the game? I've not seen one of his units be outmaneuvered like this in... ever. I still believe in Officer Brown, but that was a really bad outing.
