Best coaching job on the staff ...
Who has been the best coach for Michigan this season?
I think Ed Warinner has done the best job coaching up the OL.
Washington and Jay Harbaugh have been great recruiting.

It starts at the top and Jim has assembled an amazing coach staff at this point. Kudos to all of them

and his willingness to make changes when certain personnel aren't working out.

No room for a "Zach Smith"-type idiot on the Harbaugh staff
November 15th, 2018 at 6:52 PM ^
Yea, Harbaugh was fortunate that his "Zach Smith"-type idiot willingly left the staff to go to Maryland.
November 15th, 2018 at 7:17 PM ^
Durkin had waaay more upside than Zach Smith ever did. I am glad Durkin left, though I'm confident Harbaugh wouldn't have put up with the kind of nonsense he pulled as HC of U of Maryland.

Comparing a coach who failed to provide sufficient oversight to one who was arrested for assaulting a pregnant woman and has know personality disorders is a bit of a stretch. But I get it, any way you can try to deflect from the crumbling program that is OSU is understandable, just maybe find another medium for it.
November 15th, 2018 at 8:07 PM ^
"...who failed to provide sufficient oversight..."
Okay, so this is kind of simplifying things a bit too much. I mean, failing to "provide sufficient oversight" literally KILLED a player. Lets try not to compare the two situations - they both suck. One guy set up an infrastructure that allowed a player to die. The other beat a pregnant woman. There's no winning here...
November 15th, 2018 at 8:15 PM ^
Agreed, there is no winning here. A better comparison would be Durkin to Urban. But certainly not to Zach. I could have made that more of an emphasis in the response though.
November 16th, 2018 at 7:55 AM ^
Remember that the training and medical staffs didn't work for Durkin, so it wasn't his system that "literally KILLED a player" (nice hysterical hyperbole, though). Durkin should have gone outside the system to intervene and save a life. His was a failure to act. Smith was a bad actor.
November 16th, 2018 at 11:36 AM ^
The training works for the HC. But in any case, the culture that afforded the training and medical staff's the lack of care to look the other way and let the kid die, was built and promoted by no one other than DJ Durkin.

Fuck Urban Meyer and his enabling. Your coach is a fucking scumbag.
November 15th, 2018 at 9:47 PM ^
Ok, cool. Hook em.
November 15th, 2018 at 5:54 PM ^
That's pretty much it right there. Being the head coach of a football team is like being the CEO of a big corporation. In each case, success follows when the right people are in the right places. It's always about the people isn't it?
November 16th, 2018 at 12:15 AM ^
Just beat OSU then we can talk about best this and best that. If not nothing matters.

I've watched this gif 17 times straight now. +1.

I'd go with Warinner. The transformation of the OL from last season from now (and even since Notre Dame) has turned this team into a legit contender. The run game has been pretty good and they've given Shea enough time to showcase what he can do when he isn't running for his life. I don't think we'd be where we're at without him.
November 15th, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
Have to agree with you, W84. Warinner it is on the coaching front. And I'd go with Shea as MVP for his field leadership role in turning around the offense and helping to keep the D off the field.

I thought it was interesting that in his presser posted earlier today he commented about critiquing offensive plays. He’s obviously more than an offensive line coach, but is also bringing, probably along with McElwain his years of experience as an offensive minded coach. Looking at the whole play. Seems like testament to the culture that there do not appear to highly rigid lines of responsibility.
November 15th, 2018 at 5:33 PM ^
Warrin Brown.
November 15th, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
Harbo number one for the changes and adjustments from top to the bottom of the program.
If you want a position coach it has to be Warinner. Coach Matty and Zordich are great every year, but he change in the OL is better than we could have hoped for.
November 15th, 2018 at 5:36 PM ^
I thought this was going to be for all Michigan sports. Football would have to be Don Brown. Lots of credit to Warinner, but Don continues to dominate. For basketball it would be Luke Yaklich. We need to lock him up for the next 3-5 years, ASAP. I cant say enough about what he has brought to this team. What this team did to Nova last night was no fluke.
November 15th, 2018 at 5:50 PM ^
As much as I’d love to keep Yak, he’ll be in line for a decent head coaching gig after this year. He’s been absolutely extraordinary.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:59 PM ^
COACH IN WAITING
November 15th, 2018 at 7:17 PM ^
I’m pretty sure we’re all hoping for at least another 5-10 years of Beilein. Yak probably won’t be a coach in waiting for that long but if he does well where he moves onto he’s probably at the top of our list.
November 15th, 2018 at 5:58 PM ^
List that is wrong, but all lists are wrong:
1. Don mf Brown
2. Ed mf Warriner
3. Greg Mattison
4. Al Washington
5. Partridge
6. Zordich
7. Pep
8. JayBaugh
9. Sherrone Moore
10. McElwain
This list is wild bc even the bottom is absolutely killing it. This was based on recruiting/unit improvement. All arguments are valid in critique, I'll read them tomorrow morning tysm.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:06 PM ^
I can't argue with Warinner, but Mattison's job has been extraordinary too. He's dealt with a lot of injuries, moved players around, installed his deadly rush package and gotten high level production out of more players than we had any right to expect.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:07 PM ^
Were the pictures necessary?
November 15th, 2018 at 10:01 PM ^
Yes, because I rank them based on their mug shot and not on their contributions.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:10 PM ^
Let's not forget Ben Herbert, Strength and Conditioning coach.
He has this team wearing out opponents, playing physical throughout the game.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:15 PM ^
When you've said Don Brown, you've said it all
November 15th, 2018 at 6:21 PM ^
There is no right answer here so...all of the above. Take the defensive side of the ball. Don Brown is the best D coordinator in the country. That's really not even debatable at this point with the success he has had at all of his stops. But it is not like he has done it alone. The whole defensive staff has been impressive.
Zordich may be the best cornerbacks coach in the country. The more he thinks his DBs suck, the better they are. He has helped turn Brandon Watson from an after thought into potentially a first team all big ten level player, and our other two corners, may be his competition for that honor.
Partridge has also done a great job this year. Last year we were bombed by slot fades against our safeties. This year, we have batted close to 100% against them. Also Metellus may be the most improved player on the D. He was sorely missed last week. I don't know if we would have said that at any point last year had he not been out there. Also, our punting is amazing now.
Greg Mattison is the basically the God Father of D line coaching. We were scared about depth and injuries on the DLine to start the year and now we have a rotation that can go 10 deep. We can use Gary just on expected running downs because we have pass rush d linemen who are that good. That is crazy. We lost Mo Hurst but our pass rushing fancy stats are better than they were last year.
Al Washington and the LBs have seamlessly replaced Mike McCray. Devin Bush is Devin Bush and can get sideline to sideline when teams foolishly test him, but surprisingly, Ross and Gil have show the same ability.
Then you have our offensive side of the ball
Ed Warinner has done what many of us considered impossible with the offensive line.
But the rest of our offensive coaches deserve their dues as well. Yes Shea has made our QB play astronomically better but when DCaff has been in games, he has moved the ball down the field every single time. We can't say that about our backup QBs last year.
At RB, Jay has been great. Tru Wilson has gone from a walk on into a real contributor and a blitz pickup artist. Higdon has been the best in the B1G other than Taylor. And we are in line to land a great RB haul on the recruiting trail. I don't know who the lead recruiters are for those guys but being the Jay is the position coach, he is playing a large role in that I would assume.
Our WR are improved. Our TE are improved. Our play calling seems improved. Pick a coach any coach on this staff and you could have the right answer.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:22 PM ^
This is one of those questions that's difficult to answer for the most wonderful reasons.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:25 PM ^
I don't want to compare because when you compare someone is always diminished.
It's been a great year so far. Five more games to go.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:58 PM ^
I don’t think the coaches are that fragile over MichiganTeacher’s ranking.
November 15th, 2018 at 7:11 PM ^
Nor do I, I was just trying to quote/paraphrase Harbaugh. Guess my humor didn't come across (or didn't exist in the first place).
November 15th, 2018 at 6:36 PM ^
Thanks for including them all - that's awesome. As I scrolled down I can honestly say there wasn't one position with which I've been disappointed, not even Pep (after the ND game). Here's hoping we can keep this staff for another year!
November 15th, 2018 at 6:46 PM ^
I feel like Zordich is the forgotten man on our staff in a way because of how boring our corners are at giving up huge plays. Hats off for that man teaching our young men the best way to play.
November 15th, 2018 at 6:56 PM ^
1. Don Brown
2. Harbaugh
3. Warinner
November 15th, 2018 at 7:00 PM ^
These Coaches are all getting it done this year, and doing a great job. Everyone on the staff deserves honorable mention, but to play the game will go with Coach Brown, Coach Mattison, Coach Zordich, and Coach Warriner tied for first.
November 15th, 2018 at 7:21 PM ^
Jim Harbaugh for making the tough off season moves to put the pieces together for this championship run (brought in Washington, Roundtree, Warinner, McElwain, Herbert, Moore) wow...
November 15th, 2018 at 7:52 PM ^
Not even close... I hear there is a top secret program at the University to clone Don Brown...
November 15th, 2018 at 8:10 PM ^
I won't compare them - Harbaugh doesn't compare... Propping one up diminishes another.
November 15th, 2018 at 8:33 PM ^
Greg Mattison, every year.
To hoping he serves the Michigan program like a Supreme Court Justice.
November 15th, 2018 at 8:49 PM ^
Who in hell invited BLOsu chuckwagon in here... Dude get the hell out of here. Your coach the liar is a piece of shit.
