So What Are the Odds John Harbaugh would Join Brother Jim @ U of M?

Mates,

Checking in on the Baltimore Ravens, they are on a losing streak and have gone from 3-1 to 4-5.  The owner only extended John's contract until training camp of 2019.  I have linked an article that talks about some of the surrounding circumstances.  They of course mention a number of pro teams that might want to hire him - the Jets, Dolphins, Bucs, and Packers, to name a few.  His coaching background is mostly offense and special teams before becoming the head coach for the Ravens.

But you have to wonder, at some point guys in their stratosphere have made a lot of money, like, tens of millions.   And at some point for most people time becomes more important than money.  Ann Arbor was home for him, just like for brother Jim.

So two questions:

1.  Under what scenario(s) would John come to Michigan to coach?

2.  What/where would he be plugged into the coaching roster?

If he would it would be purely temporary, like one season.. like others said, he won’t have a problem finding another head coaching job, it will come down to what he wants.

I’d say no, but it all depends on what he wants in the offseason. Does he just want to take a break for a while, spend time with family, etc.? If so, I doubt he comes here. If he wants to scale back responsibilities but still coach in some form, maybe he takes a year and comes up to Ann Arbor as something like an offensive analyst. Or he might just try his hand and jump straight back into the NFL.

Plenty of fired coaches have done it. Steve Fisher, John Fox, Lovie Smith, Rex Ryan, just to name a few.

Ok, to play along with the game - here's a scenario.

Chris Partridge gets an offer he can't refuse to be a DC or HC somewhere. John fills in HIS spot, since after all that's pretty much the exact role he had before he became a HC.

But I do not want this to happen, as losing Partridge would seriously suck.

zero chance.   The Browns go after him.  Maryland would be fun, but that would be a step down for him and not an attractive job.  Be cool to have him in the conference though.

Too Bad the Lions won't fire Patricia this year.   John could come to Michigan for a year waiting for the Lions job to open.  So maybe 1%

i think you are going to see John Harbaugh coach the Denver Broncos next year.

Denver should be doing so much more with that defense and John Harbaugh would be a good defensive minded coach.

Seven winning seasons and only one losing season since Harbaugh has been coach. The Ravens would be dummies to fire him.

Yeah, he's not coming to coach here. If he takes the year off from coaching, he'll spend some time in Ann Arbor and help out as Jim asks him to (possibly as a talent evaluator, part time volunteer analyst, or dude who addresses the team from time to time). But a full-time paid assistant coach? Nope.

He’s one of the more respected coaches in the game. He’ll walk into another NFL job if he pleases. Only way is if he wants to take a year off head coaching and just be an analyst. But even then he’d be gone after a year. I’d love for Patricia to get fired and the Lions grab him. Sadly that won’t happen even if the lions lose out.

its a very different life in the pros.  if he came to coach with us, a lot of it would be on road recruiting...

He's on an NFL sideline next fall. Probably the Giants. If a coach with his resume wanted a college job, it would have to be head coach. Maybe at USC,  if Helton is out. Maybe at Ohio State,  if Urban retires again. Maybe at Florida State,  but I would think Willie Taggart will get some time there. It would have to be a top level program, so they could afford a coach like that. Overstating the obvious there. But who knows, this quarterback class isn't supposed to be great, maybe he decides to kick it with family in AA for a season and scout some prospects for an NFL comeback.  Not probable but it's plausible I suppose.

Maybe we can hire him as a kicking coach!

Seriously though, I don’t think the idea is far fetched that he comes and works with family for a year in the interim. I’m sure he looks at Jim’s situation with somewhat envy in relation to spending time with parents (proximity) as they enter their golden years.

A bigger worry of more mine would be...when urbs pseudo-retires after this year....would OSU throw a bunch of money at him. Then Jim and John have a 10 year war of their own... now there is a story for the media.

And John Harbaugh is just the type of guy Ohio state could use to restore their “image” after Urban Meyer’s malignancy (stage 4) has spread to all areas of the university ..and even throughout the country (Hi Zac!).

Honestly though...John strikes me as an alpha that’s not going to sit back and take a side job for too long. He will be a HOT commodity in the nfl. I can see him being the next cowboys coach. Maybe another high profile team. I think he’s that good.

It would be pretty entertaining to watch John and Jim wrestle on the sidelines over playcalls but it probably wouldn't be very effective.
