Backup QB

Submitted by Lawyer12 on November 5th, 2018 at 12:14 PM

Harbaugh has made clear that he would like to keep Joe Milton’s red shirt this year. If I understand correctly he’s only played in one game. I’d like to see him play this week assuming we have the opportunity to use the backup. That would give him the ability to play next week as well and then have some experience for OSU assuming we need a backup (hopefully not).  If he isn’t needed at OSU (or maybe Indiana) then he can still play in the Bowl game(s). One thing to consider is the possibility of two playoff games. I don’t think we ca beat OSU or compete in the Playoffs with Peters, unless the defense completely carries the team.

Any thoughts on how we should manage the issue of the backup now with Dylan out for the season?

It's going to be fine. We have a QB on the roster with a TON of game experience and who will be an NFL starter next year. As a backup QB against Ohio State, that's as good as it gets.

Also, Chase's hair will look sweet when he runs the zone read.

Peters has starting experience.  Has won games for Michigan as both a starter and a reliever and Frankly has some talent and can run a little bit.  Yeah, The Outback Bowl sucked eggs, but let's not act like he can't play or that in the type of situation we're going into that a super raw true freshman is a more viable option than an experienced and talented guy in his third year in the system.  It wasn't that long ago people thought he was the future.

Peters slings a darn nice ball.  The Oline play last year got M QB’s injured. I have zero doubt Peters would do just fine. Not as athletic as Patterson, Milton or McCaffrey but good enough if needed to scramble. Yes, I could see McCaffrey has  the it factor, but don’t sleep on Peters.

I think we have to give Brandon hte benefit of the doubt that he's been putting 100% effort into practice and that he knows the offense and has improved over this point last year and will be behind a more reliable line. He may not have Shea or Dylan's wheels, but Foles and Wentz are not exactly speedsters either. Peters may not be able to make it 81 yards downfield like Shea's Wisconsin run but he could do some keeps and RPO's. This would be his chance to make an incredible contribution to the team, and if he is going to transfer out he can show some good programs what he can do while helping his current school.

Regardless of who is the backup for the next three weeks I think it's safe to say we do NOT want to have them playing against OSU.  So maybe given the strength of schedule for the next couple of weeks we shelf any designed run for Shea and make it our goal to get him the hell out of the game by halftime.

Peters looks as if he lacks confidence at times. I think he can pass and may be with our improved OL he will play better if needed. I don't think he did a bad job playing last year, may be in the bowl game he was off. What is disappointing is that he did not use last year playing time to take command of the backup spot this season.

Peters had us in great shape last year vs Wisconsin on the road before he was hurt.  We've improved in all areas, he's a year older and we still get idiotic comments.

Pretty sure Harbaugh will give them both reps in practice and if Milton is head and shoulders better than Peters, he will be the backup.  If it is close at all, Peters will be the backup.

Harbaugh is pretty smart at this.  He will save Milton's redshirt, but not at the cost of losing a football game.

I think Peters would be serviceable, and pass well... Dont forget he got thrown into fire as a freshman...and current sentiment seems to discount that fact.... Do we not remember Russell Bellomy ?    Give Petes the benefit of the doubt here...

I think Peters position behind DCaff probably has as much to do with a) being hurt early in the season and b) being less like Shea than DCaff as it does with any lack of talent on Peters' part. What I mean by b) is, I think DCaff is better at running the offense designed around Shea than Peters could be. That doesn't necessarily mean that an offense designed around Peters, QB1 would be less effective than the offense you'd build around DCaff.

I agree the fanbase is writing Peters off too early and the people basically salivating for him to transfer so they can say I told you so is kind of gross.

Peters just looks like he's just going through the motions when he drops back to pass, but he's our best backup.  Hope the team send the message to him that he is needed this year down the stretch.

Let's hope for no more injuries, since they've had their fair share last two years, but they happen to the best and happen to the rest.

If so, Peters will be fine. EVERYBODY has improved since last year.

Add in the difficulty for a defensive coordinator to prepare for a third string QB (OSU '14), I don't even think injuries will derail this train from "getting Bama".

Of course to pull the upset on Bama we need the Shea Factor in the equation.

We almost beat OSU last year with John O'friggin Korn. Yes, if Shea goes down to injury the drop-off is significant from him to Peters. But Peters has experience and mostly played well last year in the time that he had, given the circumstances. He'd also have much better protection and a better overall offensive unit to rely on this year than he did last year.

I would not say we have no chance against OSU if Patterson goes down. It would severely hurt our chances, but it wouldn't kill them completely. OSU would still have to contend with our defense.

Isn't Peters also trying to preserve a red-shirt so that he can keep an extra year of eligibility before he transfers out?

I'm not sure how many games he's played in so far though.

Backup QB was always going to be a problem, Shea is that good.  Peters is probably now the best option, especially given the pass protection improvement.  But it was very sad to see Dylan get injured as he looked more like a plug-and-play into the current Shea-led offense.

Hope Shea doesn't get hurt, hope McCaffrey bounces back quick from the collarbone, and I hope Peters gets redemption in the event he has the opportunity set in front of him to do so.  I remember how excited I was that he was going to play for us.  Few bumps and bruises along the way and he is not the bad guy on my books.  Football guys don't check out.  If he does end up transferring it would be in his best interest to soak up this opportunity to learn behind coaches with NFL resume's.

Coaches can say what they will, of course, but I think that - realistically - that #2 spot became Peters' the moment that we found out that Dylan was going to be out for an extended period (I think a collarbone is a 6-8 week deal depending on severity). We haven't really seen Peters behind an offensive line on all cylinders, so it's difficult to estimate how that might work if we needed it to work.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of Milton against Rutgers when it hits mop up time.  If that happens against Indiana then you'll see Peters first.  It's the only way to guarantee reps for Milton while still leaving two more potential appearances for him against OSU and in the postseason (whether it be 1, 2, or --eek-- 3 games).

You are generally boned if you have to put the backup QB in (and I said generally, before you bash me with Cardale Jones references). That said, you can do a lot worse than having Brandon Peters as your #3.

Peters is the guy. Milton has promise, but handing off to the RB against shitty Rutgers isn’t going to prepare him for osu. Peters needs the reps.

Honestly, If Milton is better or the better option, who cares about a redshirt???  I don't. You have Dylan coming back next year, along with Milton, and another good QB recruit coming in.  Im not saying he is a better option then Peters as I have no clue, but if he is then play him if it comes to that.

The hype surrounding Milton really baffles me. It seems everyone thinks he’s this dual-threat danger who can run the offense the same way that Shea does. Milton was a drop back passer in high school who has a cannon but major accuracy issues.

For some reason, a lot of this board thinks he’s already ready to step in and take over. I have no idea what everyone else is seeing. I hope you guys are right, but damn, Peters can lead a game or two if need be. He’s not playing behind last year’s OL and having Crawford and McDoom as his main options on the outside.

Peters will undoubtedly be the back up. However if it’s down to him and Milton( And with our luck the last 15 years I wouldn’t be surprised) and he plays poorly, I’d give Milton a shot. He’s a similar player to cardale jones and that worked out pretty well for OSU.

You have to do what gives you the best chance this year. Red shirt be damned. With that being said though, Peters gets first crack. I just doubt his ability to run this offense.

2018 Brandon Peters needs actual playing time before anyone can accurately gauge his ability this season.

I wouldn’t write Big Cannon Joe Milton off either. He too needs more PT but he’s physicallly ready to go (we’re not talking about a scrawny, one dimensional freshman)...and we certainly don’t lose the RPO with him at the helm.

This will be the perfect 2-game stretch to give both back-ups a number of reps. Our offense as a whole is gelling, so it’ll make things easier for both QBs. Even the 2s should be ready to go.

Peters needs to get as many reps as possible, just Incase he’s needed. We won’t see too many qb runs the next few weeks but come game 12 all will be on the table

Peters has thrown one pass this season and it was a bad interception.

That said, I think he's serviceable.   Our offense takes a step back with him, but my gut tells me he'll manage the game just fine.  Supposedly he was #2 on the depth chart coming into the season and then suffered a minor injury which moved Dylan up.   He has performed very well and secured the #2 spot through his play on the field.

Milton is raw talent.   Peters has some polish and some game experience, not to mention 3 years in the system.   I don't see Milton moving ahead of Peters unless he has truly checked out and it's obvious he just doesn't care.

Hopefully we start really fast and build a huge lead and Peters gets inserted with an opportunity to run the full offense and not just hand the ball off a bunch of times.

The intelligent thing to do is to play Peters against Rutgers maybe for entire 2nd half with some of that time with 1st string offense and see how he does.  Peters has started games previously, has a number of years of experience in our O, and is our most experienced back-up. Maybe if he gets some protection from our improved O-line he might do fine.

BBQJeff

November 5th, 2018 at 5:56 PM ^

I agree that he needs to get a couple of series with the starters running a complete offense before being a handoff statue.

It would be nice to see him play at least half of the game, maybe bring him in before the game is a complete blowout so at least some of his snaps are somewhat meaningful.

Note:  I'm not 100% convinced this game is going to be easy.   This game will be a test as to just how focused this team is.

If we are up by 4 touchdowns and are running the ball at will, I think that would be a good time to bring Peters in.

4th and Go For It

November 6th, 2018 at 9:20 PM ^

It’s simple. Play em both on every snap, put Gentry in the mix as well with that three QB formation and then direct snap to Mason to mash it up the middle, ignoring all three “QBs” - they’ll never see it coming.

Who the hell knows -  We’ve seen a bit of Peters. We’ve seen next to nothing of Joe Milton. Let’s hope Shea stays healthy and if we have to fall back to any of our qb options beyond him it’s probably going to make it hard to win any game against a serious opponent. Not impossible but far less likely if based on nothing other than the fact that neither of them is getting tons of snaps with the ones. Could either of them surprise us? Sure. Would I put money on Michigan vs OSU, Bama, Clemson or rematch with ND with Peters/Milton at qb? Hell no
