Put this on the other thread, but I'll put it here too. Bosa's statement:

Nick Bosa Intends to Withdraw from School

He chooses to focus on rehab and training

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State football program will no longer realize the talents on the football field of All-American defensive end Nick Bosa, who decided this week he intends to withdraw from school in order to devote more time to his rehabilitation and training efforts. Bosa, a true junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was considered by many as the top player in college football this year before he sustained a core muscle injury against TCU. He had surgery Sept. 20 and no timetable was set for his return.

“I was hopeful that Nick would be able to return to play again for us,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said. “I know this was an extremely difficult and emotional decision for Nick and his family, and I wish him well as he moves on to get himself 100 percent healthy and ready for his next chapter. I want to thank Nick for the remarkable efforts he gave for this program. He is a first-class young man who we have been honored to coach.”

P.S. let's not forget that Nick Bosa's replacement, Chase Young, was a 5-star in HS, #7 overall prospect in the Class of 2017.

"Focus on the NFL" is unfortunate language, IMO. It makes it sound like he's being selfish; in truth, any return for him would probably be difficult and might not allow him to get up to full speed.

Tough break for him. I hope we don't have that happen with any more key players. OSU fans who complain about what this means for our end-of-season matchup can go ahead and read articles about Grant Newsome.

Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa and his family apparently have decided to focus on the next phase of his football career, which means his emphasis will be on training for the 2019 NFL draft once he is cleared to do so, several sources told The Dispatch on Tuesday.

That means he will not try to return to play for the Buckeyes this season.

The seems pretty definitive.  Best of luck to him in the draft.

Urban has created a "me first" environment. That was pretty clear the year that Zeke ripped him to the media.

I'm glad that his best players are starting to realize that they are disposable to him. They need to look out for themselves because scumbag Urban isn't going to.

This is the sensible thing to do. Seriously, not from a Michigan fan's perspective. He's a top ten pick with an injury that almost always comes back at some point - don't blow millions to come back for Michigan State and Michigan.

I'm OK if Gary goes this route, too. I hope he doesn't, but I get it. Especially given Gary's been dealing with this shoulder since last season. Go get your money and thanks for what you've done to improve Michigan. Love to see you suit up a few more times, but rather have you recover from a minor injury than risk a Jake Butt or Grant Newsome injury.

Makes you wonder if we don't start seeing a change to the 3-yrs post college rule for the NFL. You know, that or letting the players make money off their likeness while in college.

Ok, so a lot of people are moving right to Gary with this. I understand, I thought about him too.

But we're talking about very different situations here. Bosa just had surgery for an abdominal injury. The estimated time he would be out was always going to be most of the season. Even small setbacks are tough to deal with, and he will have just gone through a couple weeks where even basic exercise is impossible. So coming back at 100% would be difficult. Playing at less than 100% might not be a good option for him. It might not even be possible.

EDIT: Per OSU, he's withdrawing from school. No walking to class, no extra study time, no exams. He's trying to get more time and more rest.

Gary's issue is, by appearances, a nagging shoulder injury that surgery can't help. He struggled at Northwestern but was still out there; he can do a lot more than Bosa can.

Now, if it's an injury that can be seriously aggravated by playing to the point where it hurts his pre-draft workouts, it's a problem. But we're talking about something a lot different than what Bosa is dealing with. Gary is with the team (he was quite visible on the sidelines Saturday) and apparently just healing right now.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

As far as Gary goes, with how upset he was last year after MSU, if he doesn’t play this week, I’m going to be a little concerned that we may not see him again in a Michigan uniform.  With the bye next week, maybe they’re giving him much needed rest to get healthy for the stretch run.  Or he returns for Ohio State.  Who knows.  I obviously want him to do what’s best for him and his family.

Will be glad to not see Bosa lined up over Runyan tbh.  Heck of a player, he’s going to have a nice career in the NFL.

Supposedly he's day-to-day. I don't expect to see him against MSU, but not because he's prepping for the draft; my guess (it's only a guess) is that the staff wants him to rest and be better, and getting these two weeks off and then the bye gives him, basically, a month to recuperate for the stretch run.

AC ligament surgery is a common thing in football, especially OL and DL.  If he wants to fully repair the damage, it may be the only real option at this point to 100% fix it.  In hindsight, he probably should have had the surgery done at the end of the 2017 season.  That way he would have been fully recovered by summer workouts and now be 100%.

The problem for OSU is that the "next man up" hasn't been able to recreate Bosa's disruptiveness (which makes sense), but it's shown in the performances of the teams they've played since.  PSU, IU, and Minnesota have all been able to move the ball against them, and Bosa is still 2nd on the team in sacks despite playing about 2.5 games.

A little surprising, but its probably a smart move to secure his draft status. Why risk coming back, injuring yourself even further, and losing out on a few million bucks because of it? The only scenario in which I see he may come back is if OSU makes its way to the title game.

That being said, I'm not going to apologize for Michigan not having to square off against him in a month and a half.

I don’t see Gary as a lock for the top 10-15. Someone will take him based on potential in the first. But I don’t think he’d be sitting out to save himself for the league, if anything he could use another year to really solidify his draft stock. Also this year’s d line class is really strong. If he waited, he could be the first lineman taken in the 2020 draft. I know he’ll leave this year but just a thought. Is it worth it to get paid a little less next year or wait two year and get paid more but lose out on one year of a salary?

They are completely different injuries. His situation is not Bosa.

"Core" injuries (as shown by Verlander and Cabrera, to name two prominent examples) take many months to heal. The core affects basically everything an athlete does, particularly when it involves trying to push around 300 lbs men.

Gary's AC joint injury, depending on the severity, can be healed in 2-6 weeks. It is "just" his shoulder, e.g., "What’s unique about this injury is that most players are able to play through it if it’s only a low grade sprain." Clearly Gary has something more than low, but seeing that he has played through pain, it is very likely not severe.

Seems most likely he'll back for Penn State, if not this weekend, as that would be about 5 weeks.

Thank you robpollard !  Waiting for someone to explain this ... I fully expect Rashan to return as soon as he can play at a high level, be it msu, psu or even Rutgers.  Dude wants to be on the field with his team.  Bosa was likely told "no football for the rest of the year", as I think he was medically evaluated yesterday.  Bosa had nothing yet to prove and wasn't coming back next season ... so he left.  Rashan is NOT "saving himself for the NFL", IMO he'll play as soon as he can.

Gary could also do this but he’s in a different spot. Bosa was probably going to be the # 1 pick. Gary is probably trending to a mid to late first round pick.

If Gary’s injury is a labrum tear and it has been nagging since last year, it would make sense for him to have surgery sooner rather than later. He could still get through PT and be close to 100% by spring. I would not be surprised if that is what he did after the Northwestern game.

I'd honestly expected this and had mentioned in an earlier thread that it is the best choice he could have made.  Sure it may suck for OSU but not many players have legitimate top-3 draft status as he does.  That is some serious money that he'd be turning down trying to come back and potentially risk re-injuring it, especially as that core injury takes a good long time to heal up.

Insofar as a precedent being set - that started happening a couple years ago and unfortunately is out there already with players sitting out bowl games intentionally.  This is a natural extension of it.

Everything is falling into place for Michigan to make the CFP. Cant afford any hiccups leading up the Game. With Bosa out I feel the playing field is extremely level. OSU will still have the major homefield advantage though

Hope we can keep things going in the right direction and Beat State
