Is there a chance of a Shea return?
Let me preface this by saying that I’m one of many here that thought Shea would be a one and done at Michigan. I didn’t think there was any chance of two years of him here. That being said, I’ve been looking at some of the updates mocks out there and it appears that Shea may have been jumped in the projected draft rankings. I’ve recently seen him as high as the 4th QB taken but as low as the 6th QB taken. I can’t help but wonder, if those rankings hold true, would it be in Shea’s best interest to return for his last year of eligibility?
Some pros of a return:
- an offensive line that should remain intact up the middle with a high likelihood of improvement at the tackle spots (do I dare say a potential strength of the team, gulp)
- super talented and experienced weapons on the outside could lead to gawdy numbers
- a big time RB recruit coming in with Charbonnete
- an additional year under Harbaugh (regardless of what some think of him it’s definitely a positive from an NFL perspective)
- potential to be the 1st QB taken with a big year
I'm not saying I’d be at all surprised if Shea went pro. What I’m saying is that when he announced he was coming to Michigan I would have put the chances of him going pro at about 95%. After looking at how everything is shaking out, albeit relatively early yet, I think it’s closer to 60-40 that he goes pro.
What do do you guys think, do we have any shot at 2 years of Shea?

sure. why tha fucc not
September 19th, 2018 at 12:53 PM ^
Not if he wins the September Heisman.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
Why don't we play 9 more games and ask again? What's the point in even wondering at this point in the season?
September 18th, 2018 at 4:18 PM ^
Exactly---are we already at the point of looking towards next year???
September 18th, 2018 at 4:26 PM ^
I don’t really understand this. I still have very high hopes for the team this year and think this could be a legitimate 10 win team. No where near pulling the ripcord.
I, like many here, have the brain capacity to remain optimistic about this season while at the same time recognizing what the future may or may not look like.

MGoBloggers: If you don't like a thread topic, just move on. You don't have an obligation to be a dick.
DTOW: This is a fan blog, and you have every right to start this kind of discussion. I have been having similar thoughts myself. I still think he's gone after this year (especially if we have an awesome year), but I can see a scenario where we keep him for multiple reasons.
- He could go higher in the draft if he stays.
- If we don't win the B1G or go to the playoffs, he could come back and try to win it next year.
- Depending on where he is in his studies, he may want to finish a degree.
Let me rephrase...MGoBloggers: You can be a dick, but only if it's warranted, and only if it makes me laugh.

It’s the Lions’ effect rubbing off on a few locals...already getting ready for next year’s draft.

Michigan fans have an amazing ability to suck the joy out of watching this team. "Hey, look, we finally have a competent quarterback for the first time in a decade. Let's skip right past the joy of watching him and talk about what comes next!"
Seriously, some of you people are like happiness vampires...
September 18th, 2018 at 4:48 PM ^
We lost to Notre Dame by 7 and dominated our next 2 opponents in winning by 20+. The season is over, man... We stink! Fire Harbaugh!
September 18th, 2018 at 4:50 PM ^
Kinda like the immediate post-championship interview question in every sport with mic in face "So are you coming back next year?" Just once I want to hear someone say GTFO and let me enjoy this moment.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:43 PM ^
I have a new phrase in my lexicon: happiness vampires. Thanks, Faux Mo.

Is Faux Mo Greatlakestate? I mean why the comma after Thanks?

You nailed it Clown Boy. We haven't even started the Big Ten season and some people are already looking toward next year. Good Lord, life is too short to think like that. Enjoy the current season and let's see what happens.
September 19th, 2018 at 4:55 AM ^
Holy shit is this deadly accurate!!
September 19th, 2018 at 4:46 PM ^
I don't think the OP said anything that sounds like "Let's skip right past the joy of watching him"
Hence, your argument is invalid.
Stay safe, scary clown.

Through three games, I have seen nothing to indicate that he will leave after this season. He has a lot of potential, but plenty to work on.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:46 PM ^
I think if he would have went to a team with a flashier offense he would be putting up Haskins numbers right now.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:00 PM ^
When you say flashier, you just mean "good" right? In that case, I agree.
September 19th, 2018 at 1:02 PM ^
I agree. Imagine Shea in an Oklahoma offensive system. His numbers would be huge
September 18th, 2018 at 5:46 PM ^
It has been more or less said by Sam Webb and others that SHEA’s plan is to leave after this year. As long as he projects to go in the first 2 days of the draft, He gone.
Let’s enjoy the ride while he is here and thank him for bridging the gap until we have a fully weaponized Harbaugh (recruited) QB. ——- If we cannot salvage an aboverage QB from a RS-JR Peters, RS-Soph DCaff, or RS-F Milton the Harbaugh era has more serious issues than another year of Shea will solve.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:53 PM ^
This is shaping up to be a pretty weak QB draft class, but maybe even that will change. That's the only indicator that might affect his decision and that we currently know anything about.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
Maybe
September 18th, 2018 at 4:06 PM ^
he keeps playing the way he has, hes definitely a one and done. McCaffrey has a bright future im not concerned with the QBs anymore. Just be able to churn out an effective oline and dline every year and youll have a good team every year. Easier said then done though
September 18th, 2018 at 4:09 PM ^
He's been one of the more efficient QBs in the country this year. If he can maintain his level of play against the top teams on the schedule, he'll be a first rounder. I'd put chance he returns < 10%. If he was for sure not going to be a first rounder then maybe - although that probably means bad things for how the rest of our season played out.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
He wasn't ever been considered to be a 1st round prospect by NFL scouts. Walter Football is not a good draft site. Drew Lock, Justin Herbert, Jarrett Stidham are all likely going to be drafted ahead of Patterson. Dwayne Haskins is rapidly approaching 1st round status and has made a leap forward in the TCU game.
September 18th, 2018 at 9:04 PM ^
Haskins has one more year before he can declare...
September 18th, 2018 at 9:23 PM ^
Nope, he's draft eligible. He's a redshirt sophomore. He does not have one more year to declare.
September 19th, 2018 at 10:45 AM ^
But does it matter if he's the 5th qb off the board? Still would've been a 1st round pick in this last draft right? Not everyone is going to be the best, but again...3 games in...his mobility will be an asset, and if he finishes the year over 70%, with a Harbaugh recommendation he's definitely gonna be a 1st or 2nd round pick
September 20th, 2018 at 5:52 PM ^
As of now, NFL scouts liked Drew Lock, Jarrett Stidham and Dwayne Haskins as a potential 1st round pick. Doesn't matter if you're not a top QB prospect, just as long as you're good enough to get drafted at 1st round. Haskins has that ability
September 18th, 2018 at 6:06 PM ^
i could see him succeed drew brees in two years.... yep.... he reminds me of him for sure...
but if he is slated to go round 3, i think he may stay...
September 18th, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^
He sees Milton in practice every day. If he wants pt next season it’s on Sunday so
September 18th, 2018 at 4:47 PM ^
Milton won't be seeing meaningful snaps at UM for at least the next 2 years.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:20 PM ^

Humor was lost in a generation of kids that had to watch Rich Rod led Michigan teams
September 18th, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^
If he's worried about where he slots in this draft among QBs, what about 2020 when he's potentially behind Tagovailoa, Haskins, and Fromm?
September 18th, 2018 at 4:24 PM ^
Haskins could go this year. PFF has him in their first round behind Herbert and Grier as of today.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:48 PM ^
From what I've seen Haskins will likely be the first off the board in April. Unreal how quick his release is and the accuracy is ridiculous. Patterson should stay for another year.
September 18th, 2018 at 6:09 PM ^
Close the thread, folks. There's all the analysis we'll ever need.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
I think there is a bigger chance he goes pro in baseball if he is going pro after this year. He doesn't have the measurables the pro's want so he would have to have a monster year passing to be a higher round draft pick. Just don't see it.
September 18th, 2018 at 7:22 PM ^
NFL doesn’t care about measurables anymore
See Brees, Wilson, Mayfield and Mahomes.
September 18th, 2018 at 8:40 PM ^
Strange you put in Mahomes since he's 6'2" and 230 lbs.
September 19th, 2018 at 1:44 PM ^
The NFL cares about measurables almost more than anything.
Source: Every debate around every draft that always has the counterpoint "yeah...but have you actually watched him play in college?"
September 18th, 2018 at 4:16 PM ^
He doesn't fit what used to be the NFL QB mold (6'4"+, 220+ or whatever) ... But I don't think there's a mold anymore. They're valuing arm talent and mobility more than ever (Trubisky, Mahomes, Watson, Mayfield, etc). I think Patterson has similar natural skills to those guys. So who knows anymore? If the right people start hyping him, he could be a first round pick. He's very similar to Trubisky in my opinion. Trubisky is similar in size, strong arm, mobile (but not a burner), and doesn't have a ton of career starts in college. Trubisky was almost exclusively operating out of the shotgun, only had like 11 career starts, and stll went #2.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:26 PM ^
Yeah, there are now several guys having success in the league who are 6-2 or less. Patrick Mahomes has been a revelation and he's no bigger than that. I think the biggest thing with Shea Patterson is his arm talent is extraordinary. He gets the ball out so quick, and he is pretty darn accurate. He's smart, competitive. And there is such a premium on QB play in the NFL. I think he's gone after this season, so let's make it a glorious trip.
September 18th, 2018 at 6:02 PM ^
I agree. He's a natural athlete and can throw accurately on the run. Strong arm and he plays with an awareness that there won't always (or even often) be a clean pocket so he's quite good at escaping, buying time and making good decisions on the run. 6-5 statues are going the way of the fullback. Mayfield going first overall is pretty telling.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:25 PM ^
If he comes back, it probably means we didn't do well this season, or worse he missed time due to injury.
I'd be perfectly happy for him to play lights out and earn a high draft spot and be gone. I think Michigan is in good shape at QB behind him.
