MGOBLOG 3.0 sticky for bugs

Submitted by Seth on

We are using this thread to collect all the (fixable) feedback for the new site in one spot, and if you're seeing it on the main page it means I've updated the OP content.

If you've noticed any bugs in the site post them here and if you have constructive criticism we very much appreciate it. The developers are also going to be in this thread. Even if we can't always respond, you're being heard.

UPDATE 8/23/2018:

We met at HUEL HQ today and worked through a lot of things.

THINGS THAT GOT FIXED

1. You are now able to edit your account info (and your avatar) by clicking on your account name while logged in. Eventually your history and more (see below) will be tabbed from a single user page but this was the quick fix for now.

2. The points issue is still the top priority that they're working on. We're one step further and testing a possible fix in a test environment right now.

3. Next week or so we'll have the ability to vote on Diaries and Board posts (the OPs) themselves. Could have launched today but we wanted to move it from where they were appearing but it works on the dev environment.

THINGS WE ARE FIXING

Please note that while this is a priority tree it's not necessarily the order things will get fixed. We have multiple developers who have their different skills and as each comes free from a project they grab the next highest one they can handle.

1. Points problems

The issue seems to be in the module we wrote for counting points:

Voting module.PNG

Now that they've narrowed it down we have high hopes of getting to the root of the situation.

Lastly IF YOUR POINTS WERE RESET TO ZERO please post in here and let us know 1) A little bit about your points history, 2) When you lost them (was it during the transition), and anything else that can help us track down whatever behavior is creating this. We can't fix this because we don't know why or to what class it's happening to.

(new) 2. User permission issues.

So right now at 100 points you should be able to vote and post new threads, and at 500 points you should be able to post diaries and edit wikis.

THIS IS NOT WORKING because of an issue with the core module. We are trying a fix that might make everything work right away.

It's a permissions issue. What's supposed to happen is once you hit a points threshold you are automatically bumped up to the next user level. It's not doing the bumping because of the "Actions" module, which comes with Drupal. Now that we've identified where the problem is we're working on a patch.

2. Embedding youtubes and tweets automatically by posting a link

So because of site security we have to use Oembeds. There is a module for Drupal 8 for this but it's a paid service, which with our volume is cost-prohibitive (like they want tens of thousands of dollars per month so screw those guys).

So we're going to develop something. We would prefer to have a system that automatically turns a link you post into an image or youtube or twitter embed. That's a better long-term solution and putting something in place in the meantime would cost us time and resources we'd rather put toward more permanent changes. It's a high priority so we just ask for patience now to be paid off with a better final product than the old site had.

For now you can still post these with regular html tags and most sites will give you the source code if you can't remember how to write <img> tags in html language. We had the option to change the post-a-picture box in the comment editor with the ability to post a link instead of upload an image to our site, but we didn't want to lose that ability to post to our site since it's a feature we really wanted for the new site.

3. Side rail becoming unglued.

I've seen it and several users have as well but we haven't had a developer get into it yet because it doesn't happen too often.

4. "Continue Reading" links on front page will jump to the break tag, not the top of the article.

Another thing on the list for a dev to get to.

5. Comments bubble should link to comments

Right now it goes to the top of the article in article view.

6. Voting shows totals not aggregate

We have to rewrite the module ourselves.

7. (new) Latest post timestamp behavior

Haven't looked into it yet but it's a known issue that the latest post says there's something from a few minutes ago and there isn't. It may be bots causing this behavior.

8. (new) Clicking on a comment in a readers' post history should take you to that post.

Moderators need this.

9. (new) Some content is breaking containers

Design issue. When designer gets back from maternity leave we'll get an estimate.

10. (new) We are developing a "User Page" that will be tabbed thusly:

  • Change your user info (name, email, avatar, password)
  • See your recent post history
  • See replies to your posts
  • Your points history

Most excited about the second-to-last one, which is one of many new properties we plan to add that the old site missed.

Things Over the Horizon

1. Showing New comments in a thread as "New"

We got an estimate of big money to rent a specialist in order to build out this module. This is the next big project after we get the points figured out. Personally I wanted to address it sooner but more people complained about points so that got moved ahead. Be mad at the people who complained about points because it's all their fault.

2. Changing Scroll Behavior

We had a specialist look at this and what's happening is a problem with the order things are loaded. When you post a new comment the page DOES take you to your just-posted comment, but then it loads other comments and that pushes your screen down. If you use the up or down arrows it should take you right back to your comment. This is a problem buried deep and got another big expensive estimate to fix. So we have to wait.

(updated) 3. Apps

The process has begun. We might have a couple of light ones first then more developed ones later. FYI the problem with the old apps is they were not built to play nice with the site. If they worked great on your phone that was because they were downloading the whole site before you went to read it, and that was placing a huge drain on our resources and causing the site crashes. We will have apps and I hope to have a timeline in a few weeks. The latest is there's a drupal module we're going to try. Maybe it'll work the first time with no kinks.

(updated) 4. Saving User Preferences

We want comment settings to stick permanently for each user. Right now it resets when you post a comment. This is a BIG fix so it comes after we get other things done.

Also they're working on a bunch of functions we need internally, like the process for creating breaks, windows live writer issues, and lightbox for UFRs.

First of all, I still love mgoblog, and now that I'm getting used to it, I'm on a whole lot more than I was during the summer.  Wait.  That might have something to do with football season.  NVM.  Anyhoo, I would like to humbly suggest that the site add a "Home" button to the banner.  Sometimes I've been pirouetting through the board for a while, and I decide I ought to get serious and read the front page articles.  At the moment, the only way I can find to get back there is either to close the site and reopen it, or to click "back" a million times (this is an exaggeration).  A "Home" button would be awesome.  I promise I would use it faithfully.

Geez.  Forget I said anything.  I just discovered that the MGOBLOG on the left side IS the Home button.  I just had to accidentally run my mouse over it.  It's Christmas in September!  As you were.

FYI, the point counter still doesn't seem to be working for my account. I thought somewhere I saw that it had been fixed, but that doesn't seem to be the case for me. Thanks.

Points are still dead. Deader than Cleese's parrot. Not resting: STONE DEAD.

Good: Seem to be logged in from iPhone now.

Bad: There is no way to post from an iPhone (at least with 12.0.1): The keyboard doesn't pop up when tapping in the field to type. This is unique to this site/software. So the goodness of finally being able to login is entirely wiped out by it being useless to be logged in.

i get notifications of new posts via an rss reader, after which i almost always go directly to the site.  i understand that rss readers are not a huge priority, as (if i understand correctly) they don't contribute to pageviews...and, by extension, ad revenue.  you want people to visit the site, right?

BUT, i realized that my podcast app also uses an rss feed.  so i didn't get the friday show in time to listen to it before saturday's game!

so.  rss feed.  pretty please?

If we told you it would help, would you believe us?

But actually, we have an update to this issue and are testing it on staging this week. If all goes well, we will hopefully have the points/voting problem amended before any sparks fly.

Suggestion -

I started a thread because I saw nothing in my MGoBoard search about why Ben Mason did not play more.  I don't know why it wasn't listed.  Also, the hierarchy of hits did not seem to list the most recent first. Perhaps if I paged down I would have eventually found it.

Add to your enhancement list better search tools to avoid bad threads like mine.  Also, perhaps add a requirement to search before creating a thread with a most recent first instead of best hit.

Just checking in again to say: (i) still no way to vote, and (ii) still no change in points.  I know I'm not alone.

Archaic as it was, I really miss the old site.  Sure, it looked really dated, went down too often and had it's own bugs, but coming on here every day and having to look at features that I no longer have access to is extraordinarily frustrating.

These ads are cracking me up now. Now I'm getting ads related to Barbados - Colgate's "Keep Barbados Smiling" campaign; some rental car company in Barbados; a Caribbean mobile carrier; and some beach party called Bim Tipsy. For the record, I've never been to Barbados and pretty sure it's never come up in a search. Maybe because I travel for work frequently?

This! Several people (including myself) have advocated for this as I think it makes way more sense to read content and the replies and then be able to make a response once you reach the end versus having to scroll all the way back up to make a post. I thought perhaps the bye week would've been a good time to implement some of the things that have been in dev/testing (such as OP voting which was said to be "ready" back in August) but now I'm thinking it won't be until the football offseason.

When you check for someone's comments, I just noticed that it is "Recent Comments" only, looks to be the last 50. Any way we can get back all comments, with page numbers to scroll through? For some of the more prolific posters, posting history goes back barely a day.

Now getting the participation point for posting, but still can't vote. It's hard to play Siskel & Ebert with no thumbs. Wondering if non-voters can get banged and have it stick, though, so if anyone reads this, please contribute to science and give me the ol' J. Arthur Rank treatment...

Point System Isn't Really Fully Working

Now that points-for-posts has been restored (Hail!), what’s the over/under on the number of months or years before the crack programmers and website designers at Human Element have enabled the features that (1) permit voting on the original post, (2) show total up votes and total down votes, instead of the net amount of votes for each post, (3) properly indicate whether or not you’ve already voted on a post and (4) immediately show the changes in vote totals without having to refresh the page when you’re viewing MGoBlog on a desktop?

It’s still hit or miss as to whether you’ll know if you’ve already voted on a post.  If you see a blue-shaded thumbs-up emoji, you have no way of knowing if you’ve voted on it until you click on the emoji again.  If the vote total decreases, then that’s the only way for you to know that you’ve already given the post an up vote.  Then you have to click on the thumbs-up emoji again in order to restore the proper vote total.

Errors trying to upload images..points broke again (3rd?  5th? time)....not a surprise to anyone unfortunately.

This web board software sucks ass and it's RIDICULOUS that you guys are messing around with this stuff when you could probably buy a forum for $100/month or something.  Message board drives traffic I don't understand why this isn't a higher priority.  Whoever is messing with your board code doesn't know what they're doing..or this Drupal stuff is absolute garbage.

I mean most of us would be willing to pay for a sub to a functional normal message board to offset the cost.

I still don't have the ability to vote like I did with the old site. I also don't have the ability to create posts. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but it's annoying to see users who have been banned and then created new accounts with more functionality than I have.

Do I need to make a new account?

There is a relevent post from a rivals website on the eve before The Game that I'm unable to post via mobile.  It would be helpful to copy and paste from mobile devices without using a function key, which isn't available on mobile devices....

....and my wife has yelled at me for being on my phone for so long while trying to figure this mess out.

Is there any way to avoid the drop downs after refreshing the site?

My cursor/pointer is at the top and as I drag the cursor down to click on threads the damn drop downs are in the friggin way and won't go away.  So annoying.

Ok.  Thanks for listening.  I'll hang up and listen.

Ongoing problems with my profile under MGoBlog 3.0:

1) my points are still frozen at 459, despite several posts over these 3 months.

2) votes on posts, either net total or itemized up and down, are not visible.  No effective way to vote on posts as well.

3) given the above, are there browser issues for Safari users, either on iOS or MacOS, as opposed to Chrome or Firefox, i.e. are you Apple user-friendly?

4) can you add a component to your profile, allowing one to list their alma mater or relationship to the University of Michigan?

Thanks for your ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the site!

Merry Xmas and Happy Holidays!

META: not sure if this is the best place and didn't want to send an email for this. But, is it possible, and not too much trouble, to add the basketball schedule under useful stuff tab? I think it would be good and appropriate addition, again if it's not too much trouble.

So here's an upgrade request that seems relatively simple (I know, nothing is simple!): Can the MGoBoard list be routinely updated and sorted by active posting activity, rather than by chronological order based on new posts?

This comes from a suggestion by Magnus in a recent post ("META Down Vote Button for Thread OP") as a way to self-police bad thread topics/OP's.  The idea being that popular threads would stay at the top of the list while less popular threads would eventually filter their way off the main page.  I think it would be fair to place new OP's at the top, so everyone would get a chance to see them.  After some amount of time, new posts could be evaluated, along with older posts, based on posting activity within each thread.  More posts on a given OP = higher placement on the list shown on the main page.

This change feels like a relatively easy DB query fed into a basic call to reorder the list whenever the page updates.  I suspect you're collecting enough metrics to make it work...  This could also be a way to relieve some pressure on getting an OP up/down vote ability re-enabled (I know the points module has been a particular headache).

The downside to this change may be that some popular OP's become HUGE, and never leave the top of the list, let alone the main page.  It would keep the topic front and center, and we might (probably would) constantly return to continue conversations (ie: arguments).  It's certainly a reasonable assumption that days old topics could be chronologically and situationally out of date, but ongoing arguments keep the OP on the front page.  And now that I've dropped that turd, I'll let you consider cleaning the punch bowl and rolling with the change...  (Maybe just force it off the front page after two days, or whatever?)

A change that would help readability in the comments sections would be the following (keep in mind, I have no idea where else these classes are used, so it may cause other issues to have them changed completely).

.views-element-container .child { margin-right: 0; }

.views-element-container .indented { padding-right: 0; }

These issues make the replies shrink from both sides, making the reading area smaller and smaller, unnecessarily so (no need to shrink from the right).

I like to use the Post Date - Newest first sorting feature during game threads, nice new feature that the old site didn't have. However once the thread gets too many posts, the feature seems to get overwhelmed and just dumps you into the middle or back at the beginning of the thread?
