OT: Let's Hear Your Unpopular Opinions

Submitted by Cereal Killer on

Okay, I know I'm getting sent to Bolivia about 8 nanoseconds after I post this, but here goes.  I'm not trolling.  Absolutely for real.   I like Jemele Hill . . .

AND

I think she's pretty attractive.

Got any unpopular opinions you are willing to share here?

See you on the other side.

There is a difference between a fan and an alumnus.... but that difference has nothing to do with sports / fandom.

When people say University of Michigan to a fan it may mean only sports (maybe, I dunno, this could be where I am wrong), but the connection an alumnus has goes well beyond sports, as it carries the obligation to represent, and be an ambassador for the University as a whole, of which sports are obviously a part of.

Michigan and Harbaugh got crapped on on the recruiting trail for only winning 8 games in 2017. I believe the questionable 2018 (in some people's eyes) class is a direct result.

If UM doesn't win a decent amount of games in 2018 (10ish?) then they will miss on a lot of their remaining big name 2019 recruiting targets. I won't go so far to say that this season will make or break the UM program but it is a huge swing year in what this program can be.

I do not like bananas or anything with banana in it. They are one of the most unfathomable things on the planet.

Also, as much as I like Easter, Cadbury Eggs and Peeps suck the big one.

OK, one more - Country music. Blech.

The new site isn’t that great and still needs work. It’s basically the old site with some polish rubbed on. Can a brother get responsive images/videos and tables on the homepage posts at least?

Michigan fans, at least on this site, have become progressively more intolerable.

I thought it was bad when people were bitching about Beilein after his first final four run. Our top player kept getting injured and we had just sent our entire starting lineup to the NBA. Just such knee jerk reactions.

Then it was followed by this years football season. Was it disappointing? Yes, absolutely. But holy hell, we were one of the youngest teams in the country, and were down our incumbent QB after the first couple of games. Just look at what happened to FSU last year when their QB went down.

We just have a large section of dumb fuck fans that refuse to take in to consideration any legitimate obstacles that the team faced and instead just like to shout unacceptable.

(I apologize for the swearing. That has been bottled up for a bit.)

This is just fact. The unfortunate other truth is that as totally expected as 2017 was for any fan paying attention, many recruits don't fit that description. I think it is hurting us, despite being reasonable and expected.

FWIW, I'll go further - I don't see what the coaching staff could have done to fix the problems they had, once Speight was down. I was hating his approach as much as the next guy, but IMO, if he plays the whole season, they lose only 2 games.. Penn State and..another one where Speight doesn't help enough. FWIW, I'm not calling him a savior or even a good QB. But uninjured Speight would have been better than the guys who couldn't provide them with big 10 level qb play.

Though it's objectively good to be nice to people -- or at the very least to not be actively offensive -- political correctness will never be a practical way to fix this about the world because its spirit of scolding is egotistical, off-putting, and naturally causes the objects of its scolding to recoil and double down.

We deserve a more humble formula than "Whereas you're wrong, I'm right, and listen here because I also know the best way for you to live."

Kanye West's Gold Digger is absolutely the worst hip hop song of all time.  Lyrically it may have said something, I don't know, couldn't get best the atrocious muscality.

On a related note, I think Kanye's recent challenging statements and his willingness to stand by them take a lot of courage.  I don't agree with many of them, but it's very difficult to stand in the face of the blowback he's received and hold to what amount to really, really radical views for many communities.  Hey may be wrong in a lot of it, but the discourse could have been really interesting.  Instead the echo chamber twitter and meathead mobs responded with a lot of viciousness.  I hope he holds on and that the echo chamber which once considered him the poet laureate of this generation can re-engage in a more meaningful manner.  He seems open to the discussion, the possibility that he may be wrong, and to many different viewpoints, and I applaud that.  We need a hell of lot more of that.

Here goes!

Golf and baseball are excruciatingly boring things to watch.  I understand that there's a lot going on beneath the surface that most people don't get and their respective practitioners spend a ton of time and thought into perfecting their craft, showing determination and focus that I don't have.  You could say the same of hunting (something else I'm not into)  - I know jackshit about hunting but know that it takes a lot of dedication and careful study of nature to master.  I still have less than zero desire to watch some guy cramped in his blind for 10+ hours waiting for the quarry to present itself.

I think people w kids should pay more taxes, not less, than single people at the same income level.  They use more services - schools, libraries, etc.  Why should they get more deductions on their tax returns?

I see your point but will counter with: they are more likely to spend more into the economy than someone without kids which is a benefit for all.

Or I could ask your question a different way:

Why should someone in Iowa pay as high of federal taxes as someone in say NY since there is a very low chance that Iowa will actually need any of the defense spending that a lot of our taxes go to compared to someone in NY.
