OT- Kiper has Lions taking J. Jones
January 16th, 2013 at 11:51 AM ^
Would definitely be okay with that pick up, but would much rather have Dee Miliner if he falls to the Lions' draft pick. Desperately need secondary help.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:53 AM ^
From what I've heard, Miliner is not expected to be a top 5 pick and the Lions should trade down if they want to get him.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:58 AM ^
I totally agree with that assessment, however, kiper's list has him going 4th, so....

People always talk about "trading down" as a viable option, but that assumes that there are teams that want to trade up into the #5 spot. I could be wrong, but it seems like there isn't a huge market for teams trying to get up into the Lions' spot this draft. I don't know that trading down is really an option.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:33 PM ^
Every team would trade down, pick up assets, and then draft the guy they wanted anyways...if they could. The only teams that are really able to do it are just lucky and happen to wind up in a coveted draft spot. And you never really know which spot will be coveted until the dominos start falling in the draft.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:40 PM ^
That was my thought too. I'd like to see them try, but I don't think it will happen. If it does, it will be because team 7-9 wants whoever team 6 is going to take. So, basically, you have to hope that a team is reaching so that we don't have to.

"will sack quarterbacks, and skip the dance as he helps them up"
Not terribly typical for the esss eeee seeee, but I've seen this kid has class in games of theirs I've watched. Stafford will like having another Bulldog around, methinks. Agree with Pedo though...still need some secondary help. Awful.
January 16th, 2013 at 11:58 AM ^
I'm hoping for a cornerback, too. The Lions haven't had a shutdown corner since Dick Lebeau...

I didn't want many Lions games this year, but I don't think the pass rush is their biggest problem... Between Avril (if he comes back), Suh, Fairley, etc., somebody ought to be fired if the Lions can't generate a pass rush.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:08 PM ^
AVril is not worth the amount of money he wants and we do need A DE bad cause if Vandenbosch is the best we have next year we r screwed. Imo they will cut him and try to sign him to a better contract because the lions the way they r set up have neg 1.1 million as is towards next years cap. but saying that we need talent anywhere on this roster except QB.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:28 PM ^
January 16th, 2013 at 1:41 PM ^
That's the ticket. Despite having all those guys, they couldn't generate any rush. Avril took a huge step back, KVB is old, and the other guys (Willie Young and Lawrence Jackson) are pretty young. When you add that in with Suh's lack of concern for the run game, and it's a weird situation when Nick Fairley was our best overall D-Lineman.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:41 PM ^
As it turns out, I didn't want many Lions games either. But the played the damn things anyway. Lost most of 'em, too, surprise surprise.

Terry Fair...oh wait. Bryant Westrbrook...oh wait.

January 16th, 2013 at 12:45 PM ^
Oh, that's not fair. Bryant Westbrook always made sure his receiver never caught the ball. Usually he did it by tackling them before the ball got there, but semantics semantics.

Lem Barney.

is a hall of famer and the first of the great #20's in our lifetimes.
January 16th, 2013 at 3:34 PM ^
No doubt, additions to the secondary would be big for the Lions.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:01 PM ^
The Lions will probably take Te'O and that will just confirm with me that they have no clue what they are doing.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:03 PM ^
Where does Kiper have Teo going now?
January 16th, 2013 at 2:05 PM ^
8th to the Bills
January 16th, 2013 at 5:53 PM ^
Now where does he have Te'o going?

January 16th, 2013 at 12:17 PM ^
If that doesn't sound like the Lions, what does?
Trying to up their overall talent level at the expense of common sense by drafting Mathieu. I keep saying it, but that would be the most 100% Lions thing to do come draft day. And I don't necessarily mean in the 1st, just at all. Ever.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:04 PM ^
I like that pick a lot and hopefully we can take a good CB or S with the 2nd round pick.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:05 PM ^
J. Jones...the first player I could think of was RB Johnny "Jam" Jones who played for Texas in the late 1970s. Had teammates Johnny "Lam" Jones (WR) and Johnny "Ham" Jones (RB) who were each pretty good players. Best collection J. Jones' ever on one team.

was a solid RB on the lions for a while.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:39 PM ^
I went the other way...to Jamarco Jones.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:35 PM ^
I was thinking Julio Jones. Apparently there are a lot of J. Joneses out there.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:30 PM ^
Best Atlanta Falcons QB ever.

January 16th, 2013 at 12:12 PM ^
Good. This guy deserves more hype than he gets (which is rare, I know) but he's a great pass rusher, and a great tackler. Not bad in coverage either. He's worth a top 5 pick, unlike all the mock drafts over the holidays that had KC picking Geno Smith #1 overall, smdh.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:14 PM ^
he is a perfect pick for the Lions!

January 16th, 2013 at 12:30 PM ^
Maybe he'll draft Denard as a QB?
Edit: Aaaaand wrong thread...

the lions have 7 starters who started last year who are unsigned so we need everything. but I dont know if the way the nfl is so much offense that we shouldnt just try to be the best in the league and just outscore everyone it seems defense is overrated in the NFL nowadays.
January 16th, 2013 at 12:48 PM ^
the most dysfunctional wide receiver on the board. After watching the Lions futilty in drafting players since the 70's, I gave up on them decades ago. It's mind boggling to see how few of the high draft picks they've gotten over the many years actually turned out to be stars. And even with them, they've almost never made the playoffs.

I agree he is a stud but he seems more suited for a 3 4 cause the lions wouldnt use him right cause they dont blitz the LBs enough. I would prefer MOORE for Texas AM if he is there becuse he is a DE which LIons i am pretty sure only have 2 signed for next year one who had no sacks and the other never seen the field.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:06 PM ^
Would be a great pick. They need to address many positions, but you can't pass up on a player of that caliber.
January 16th, 2013 at 1:06 PM ^
January 16th, 2013 at 2:12 PM ^
Kiper also says Lewan made a mistake coming back and that he was beaten by Clowney 4 or 5 times in the Outback Bowl. Coming back, the value of that move is debatable I suppose, but I certainly don't remember seeing Clowney beat Lewan 4 or 5 times in the bowl game.
January 16th, 2013 at 2:32 PM ^
you should scrutinize anything he says. And what's up with those glasses from the 70's that he's wearing? Don't tell me his prescription didn't change in 40+ years.
January 16th, 2013 at 3:49 PM ^
Thanks for summarizing, because I refuse to click through.

He had this to say about Denard in his ESPN.com chat today:
"I think he's a solid second rounder. He'll show great speed at the combine. He's a heckuva football player. Teams that could look at him at WR moreso than return man, Cleveland, St. Louis, Minnesota, Buffalo, Miami, Jets, New England, San Diego, KC, Tennessee."
