Considering Chicago has the most non-homestate alumni for Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin (and I bet Minnesota & Penn St aren't far behind), Detroit and Minneapolis are kind of bookends for the non-home state alumni in terms of reasonable travel. Plus Twin Cities and Detroit actually know how to host a winter sports event, so I would imagine the "event" portion of the tournament will be well taken care of. I give it a tentative thumbs up. Until Michigan gets screwed in the championship game, at which point I'll complain about bitter former WCHA or CCHA refs. Chicago would have been ideal geographically, but you gotta make sure you sell tickets, so you have to make sure you have the event in a city with multiple large alumni bases. Twin Cities and Detroit both fit the bill. If the CCHA had survived, I would have wondered where they would tourney at (Grand Rapids?), but with the new WCHA, have they announced a location? I would imagine either Twin Cities or some other location in Minnesota. |

I have a still photo of the aftermath that my friend took on her camera framed on my work desk. It's of the melee with O'Malley pinning the mascot up against the glass and trying to pull the jersey over his head. I remember thinking as soon as I saw OMalley sprint skate over that this was going to be a real life "SlapShot" moment. That was the year after Bob Gassoff graduated... my friend and I just looked at each other said how much more awesome that would have been had Gassoff been on the team. We both agreed he would have taken his skate off and tried to gut the mascot with a rusty blade. |

I just happened to bring a portable tape recorder with me that weekend as my last weekend at Yost as a student. I was a 6th year season ticket holder weeks away from finishing my master's, I was single as my long time girlfriend broke up with me earlier that semester and my "hockey family" was all I had at that time. So I brought the tape recorder into Yost that weekend and ended up making tracks of the chanting that happened during the UM/SCSU and UM / Denver games. Listen to the crowd still going nuts after the goal name announcements. That weekend was a reaffirming experience. I was for my last two years at Yost one of the main chant leaders. I literally almost passed out during the "Dubleiwicz, Sieve" chant as held the last one for wayyyy too long. I remember getting the death glare of all death glares from Wade D's mom b/c I pronounced his name wrong. It was glorious. |

Commercial on Fox Sports Indiana between periods is for Columbus Crew. Apparently their motto for this year is "Dare to be Massive". Didn't know Mr Plow played soccer. |
