OTish: Wolverines in the G-League tonight
I went to the Wisconsin Herd/Motor City Cruise game tonight, and was pleasantly surprised by the presence of two great Wolverines.
That’s Zavier Simpson (24 in white) and Glenn Robinson III (13 in green).
X was awesome! Sliced and diced his way to 32 points, most on blow-by layups and one signature hook shot.
GRIII was … there. Six points on maybe five shots. The man’s 30 years old now. I don’t see him having another shot at the Association. I’m sure he’d make much more money playing overseas now. Not sure why he’s even there.
As an aside, tonight I saw something else in the game. Something I have to admit I’ve never seen in a basketball game on any level or any sporting event of any kind.
(7 in white)
After he made a three, I yelled out “THREEBREW!” Nobody laughed at my joke.

That's Ryan Turell. He's Orthodox Jewish and plays on Sabbaths which is interesting, but he walks to games or practices on that day. I hope they don't play too many road games on Friday night or Saturday.

I see on his Wiki page that he went to D3 Yeshiva University. I’m assuming there were no issues with games on the Sabbath for him in college.

I also see that he was a McDonald’s AA and had several D1 offers, but went to a small Orthodox Jewish college. Props to him.
He was also a featured character on the show, "Destination NBA," on Prime Video. I think I recall him telling a story about how Duncan Robinson inspired him.
I hear his nickname is the "Hebrew Slammer."

Don't forget Tamir Goodman, the "Jewish Jordan." Starred at Towson and was considered a pro prospect. Mostly played overseas.
X-cellent to see X to the Z still excelling! Love that dude.
GRIII probably doesn't need the dough. Some players prefer to live Stateside and be more readily available for a call-up (even if his isn't coming soon).
You obviously never played in the Oakland Activities Association against Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, or Lathrup :)
I remember playing in the mid 90s against Seaholm I think, and they had a point guard that wore a yamaka and had white Nike hightops with "Air River Jordan" on them in sharpee marker. Dude was a ball handling wizard but couldn't shoot for his life.
Thanks to the gallery for explaining the joke, which flew over my head.
Ten years ago I figured he was one of the high-ceiling guys on the team along with Mitch and Caris. (Hardaway and Burke exceeded my expectations in the NBA.) In terms of duration and utilization he had a decent career:

Not bad. His "three" ball never really developed.
The deal with GR3 is that he quit or retired from basketball a couple years ago and then decided to come back. Landed this gig as a path back into the sport hoping for one more shot at the NBA. Probably not happening, but going overseas makes you money but puts you farther from the league.
X is going to keep killing it in this league for years to come.
