I'm in the 'now I can die…

I'm in the 'now I can die happy' camp. The past 20+ years felt like Tolkein-esque epic quest to slay a dragon, and if the endeavor ultimately consumes the hero of the story in the process, so be it. The dragon has been slain.

Michigan football will still be fun. Losses won't be the season-ruining event they used to be with the new playoff system, so the live-and-die nature of every game will be diminished. I think that's a good thing. Now that we've got this title under our belts, we can hopefully enjoy the process going forward rather than suffer an obsess over it. We all needed this one. We went through a lot on the way to getting it. But we got it, so all that difficult time can be stuffed in a locker and we move on.

Is it really Ravens style…

Is it really Ravens style when it’s the actual Ravens?

This is an incredible…

This is an incredible analysis. One thing it left me wondering about though is: What adjustment(s) from PSU would theoretically have refuted Michigan's heavy gameplan?

I think Michigan should hire…

I think Michigan should hire Urban so when we cheat in the future we get away with it.

I had to put the Iowa…

I had to put the Iowa Wisconsin game on my laptop while I watched Oregon Washington just to remind myself what defense is and kind of balance things out.

I noticed that two teams…

I noticed that two teams from 1979 made the top 5... Utah St. and San Jose St. Both teams were all offense and no defense and guess what...they played each other that year in the first game of the season.

Final Score:

48-48 tie.

So, one more game to…

So, one more game to determine whether he's as good as Yzerman, or only almost as good?

This is one of the best comments on the blog lifetime to date.

I was going to say something…

I was going to say something similar to this. Tennis is also a somewhat isolating sport particularly at younger levels when kids are training, and in women's tennis they reach their professional peak so young that even school is often a side-hustle for top players. Most other pro athletes we are familiar with are playing team games and when they are 25 they may just be making it to the big time as opposed to having already been there a while.

At least they realize…

At least they realize Clemson is the only team who might have to worry about the extra games

I think JJ could win the starting job at UGA this offseason

If JJ's floor isn't higher…

If JJ's floor isn't higher than Cade's floor next season, we should probably blame the coaching.  I share the opinion with many others that Cade didn't have to do anything wrong to lose the job. JJ is the more talented player and if he elevates his floor in the off season to anywhere close to Cade's - doesn't even have to be higher - then it's worth starting him because his ceiling is considerably higher than Cade's.

No other conference will…

No other conference will treat us better in football. In fact, most of the other ones will hate us more and be just as happy to screw us. And the B1G is a fun basketball conference to be a part of.

With respect to Michigan, the B1G is the Jim Harbaugh of conferences. Not perfect, not enabling the results we want, but probably better for us than anything else out there.

so you're saying the dude…

so you're saying the dude with the handwritten bell curve graphs was Harbaugh all along?

To play one year before Arch takes the job?

For reasons that are unclear…

For reasons that are unclear to me based on my general awareness of their recent recruiting successes, their offensive line seemingly cannot block anything and they can't accomplish anything running or passing as a result.

I bet none of us have good memories of watching that game

What makes me sad is that for most of my life I didn't stress about the inevitable consolidation into super-conferences because I never thought Michigan would be one of the teams on the outside looking in.

I can't believe I read all of that, but am kinda glad I did. It was an interesting articulation of problems that are perceptible even to people who don't really care and are hard to nail down without thinking too hard about it. Thanks for the post.

As a parent of a 3rd grader…

As a parent of a 3rd grader and Kindergartener, I could use some insight as to what is really important so that we can work with ours kids more effectively.  I have decided to de-emphasize everything other than Reading, Writing, and Math because those are skills that will build over time and will erode if they don't get practice.

Just about everything else seems to be way more trouble than it's worth.

I have also come to realize that in the 6 hours my kids are at school, they probably are only doing about 2 hours of actual learning. The rest is lunch, recess, gym, and various activities to develop social or artistic skills. Instead of trying to fill my kids' days with 6 hours of school stuff to do, I'm satisfied if they knock out 2 solid hours of work over the course of the day.

The school itself is providing value mainly by sharing the activities and directing us to the resources where the kids can do writing and reading comprehension and math exercises online. There isn't any actual teaching from the elementary school teachers anymore. They also gave up on Fridays and have gone to a 4 day a week plan.

Every time browse Netflix I…

Every time browse Netflix I see a bunch of things I'm not ready to commit the next 10+ hours of my life to.  Random evening sports is creating a tremendous void.

That being said, I'm still not sure I'd choose resumption of sports over resumption of school if I could only have one or the other immediately.  #children'dhousehold

Attorney here. Went fully…

Attorney here. Went fully paperless a few years ago and gradually shifted to working from home to cut down on commute and avoid distractions in the office.  Only reason I would go into the office was to keep the staff morale up or out of guilt that they had to be there.  This year I got my staff approved to work from home two days a week...so the timing of that was perfect because we were equipped for this transition.

I can realistically do 100% of my job from home, but marketing and new business development is basically cancelled for the foreseeable future.  Also, if we can't take depositions or go to court for a while, things will start to dry up and it'll be harder to keep people busy.  Right now all our courts are shut down but for essential functions like custody hearings and criminal proceedings (not my line of work).

if you're going to bet on a Michigan game like this one against PSU... put a good bit of money on the opponent's Moneyline.  If Michigan wins you'll be so pleasantly surprised and happy that you won't care that you lost money. If Michigan loses you'll have made a little bit of money to cover the alcohol to numb the pain.

the payout was -105...($105 wager to pay $100).  Won't say how much I put down but it was 25% of my annual "gambling budget"

Looking hard at the UF line now. That looks like an overreaction giving SC more credit than they are due for UGA's total dud last week, and hitting UF too hard for losing to LSU.  Only concern is the trap potential for UF with UGA up next.

I hit a big 7 pt teaser just now: OSU -20 and OVER 42.5

I don't think firing…

I don't think firing Harbaugh is the answer, but I can't imagine he's enjoying this very much himself. Surely he thought things would go better when he took the job. I wonder how much more of this he can take and if he would ever resign.

More worryingly, I wonder how much more of this Brian Cook can take before HE resigns.

With 2:30 left in regulation…

With 2:30 left in regulation and 4th and 2 at the 50 yard line, I thought we should have punted.

With 1 timeout remaining, there is no way Army could have moved the ball down the field quickly enough to get into FG range to attempt a game winner. Instead we went for a run up the middle, got stuffed, and left Army needing just 20 yards or so to get into range for a FG attempt.

I understand playing for the win and trying to keep the ball and getting a FG of our own, but we hadn't converted anything lately and the coaches surely knew that Shea wasn't executing anything well.  Punt seemed better and we were lucky not to lose to that FG.

I once sat next to and had a brief conversation with Mike Tyson and his entourage at the airport in Atlanta.

Once stood face to butt with Dennis Rodman and Bill Lambier on the escalator at that same airport.

Played a round of golf with Todd Gurley while he was at UGA

Let David Terrell use my computer in the dorm (he lived next door) to write his paper on Komodo Dragons.

My wife, while we were dating, got asked out by Ian Poulter and she foolishly declined in favor of me. To be fair she didn't know who he was at the time and was annoyed that he was complaining to her about the airline losing his golf clubs.

Tennis. Involves physical…

Tennis. Involves physical strength, short burst speed, long term endurance, lateral agility, footwork, hand-eye coordination, mental toughness and strategy. Developing all or any of those attributes can apply to other sports. You also wont get concussed much. The hard part is developing teamwork when so much time and practice is one-on-one.  Maybe throw in some soccer for good measure.

But where does Iowa rank if…

But where does Iowa rank if you remove TEs?

Possibly, but the same thing…

Possibly, but the same thing happens with the defense in every game, not just against OSU.  We realign right before the snap and sometimes aren't completely "set" when the snap occurs.

If OSU scorched us, and no other team did, but the late pre-snap realignments were prevalent in all games then I don't think the alignments were the differentiating factor. I think OSU being better at speed and at preparation are the more likely culprits.

I think a large part of the…

I think a large part of the last second adjustments are part of the defense disguising it's true intentions.  They align a certain way to fool the QB, and they revert into position at the last second, not to react to what the offense is doing, but because that is what they were planning to do all along.

Your question about whether…

Your question about whether being asymmetrical is a flaw in the defense that can be exploited by the offense shifting pre-snap is a good one.  Given what you said, that SDE and WDE are such prevalent distinctions that even recruiting sites project high school players to one or the other, you have to assume that it's not a fundamental defensive flaw to build personnel that way.  If it was such a glaring exploitable flaw, it wouldn't show up in so many defenses so frequently to the point that recruiting sites can project which position a kid is best suited to play.

Your other question about energy being wasted pre-snap seems unlikely to be an actual thing.  Sure, moving requires more energy than not moving, but I don't think pre-snap alignment shifts contribute significantly to fatigue.  It's like the difference between a pitcher's live pitches in baseball and his warmup pitches.

Obviously after you cut off…

Obviously after you cut off your first arm you just leave the chainsaw running and then lie down on it so the other arm rests on the saw and the weight of your remaining arm should eventually make the saw cut through most of it and then you just wiggle a bit until it’s all the way off. What sucks is you’ll have no good way after that to block out the noise of the running chainsaw. If you’re lucky you’ll bleed out before the sound annoys you to death. Either way, there won’t be any more good reasons to come back from the dead, having accomplished the only one already.

This comment is incredibly on

This comment is incredibly on point. The fact that Michigan is familiar to lots of people opens the door to connect with those people because it provides that shred of common ground to break the ice and generate conversation. The sports teams are a major reason that Michigan is familiar to so many people.
