This is a great interview where Eisen and Klatt discuss the upcoming game vs MSU. If you pick up the video at 4:39 or so, Eisen makes that point that many on this blog have made – that Cade has done a really good job, has made very few mistakes, but seems to have a limited upside. He then asks Klatt if he has asked Harbaugh about what his plans are for QB moving forward. Klatt responds that YES, he has spoken about this with Harbaugh and Gattis and then paraphrases what they said.

My transcript of the relevant portion of the video is below.

Klatt:

“Let me put it to you this way and I’m going to paraphrase what they (Harbaugh and Gattis) say. And these are my words, not theirs. But I’m going to paraphrase what they say. They would not be 7-0 without Cade McNamara being their starting QB. There’s a good chance they can’t get to 12-0 or 11-1 without JJ McCarthy playing a more significant role or even being their starting quarterback moving forward. OK, so if you start to think about this, and I think that they had a long view to begin the season, where they know, like, listen – in order to give ourselves the best chance to win, Cade’s got to play. He’s not going to turn the ball over, we know we’re very good up front on our offensive line, we got these two great backs, and we’re just going to be able to bludgeon people to death really, and win games. Now if we can get through Wisconsin on the road or Nebraska on the road, And we can win those games, we’re going to set ourselves up for a chance to make a run here late in the season – late October and November.

Now having said that, rather than just put all their chips in that basket, they understand that Cade McNamara probably has a lid or a ceiling to where he can take the offense. I wouldn’t categorize him as an above the X’s and O’s player. Here’s how I would put it. They don’t have a wide receiver that takes Cade’s game to the next level and Cade doesn’t take any of their wide receiver’s games to the next level.  JJ does, potentially, but he’s the unbroken colt that you get on, but you just don’t know. You don’t want him to buck you off against Wisconsin or Washington early in the season and lose you a game with a poor interception or a mistake, but at the same time you know that that ceiling that Cade has on this offense may need to be ratcheted up, and that lid may need to come off of that offense at some point down the stretch. Maybe it’s this week.

So they played him (JJ), and it wasn’t just small packages – they gave him the offense and would allow him to play in big moments and shuttle him in at times. And now, if and when they need to go to JJ McCarthy, he’s not an unknown commodity. They’re not, quote, “replacing the quarterback”, they’re just giving him an expanded role within the offense. I think it’s very smart of them, they understand what they’re going to need here in the back half of the season and I think they’re more prepared to answer some of those questions if and when they arise, than maybe they have been in the past.”

So it sounds like the coaches see things similarly to how many of us on the blog do – Cade has a high floor, but a lower ceiling. And the coaches chose to go with Cade to start the season because they didn’t need a super high ceiling to start the year and could use that time to continue getting JJ up to speed and ready to take the reins. It sounds like the coaches are riding with Cade as the starter until we play a team where we need the higher ceiling in order to have the best chance to win. And then it’s time to unleash JJ.

JJ can make the receiving group better.

JJ can stretch a defense in 2 ways that Cade cannot.

I believe many understand this.

I believe many don't understand this.

I don't disagree with your points about Cade not getting sacked or throwing picks. He's also not producing more yards through the air than our run game produces. That's why I lean JJ. He changes the run game numbers, and potentially opens up more lanes and causes the defense to make mistakes that lead to home run type runs instead of a ground and pound approach. We're a run first team, go with the QB who maximizes that. How many times has a mobile QB been the difference maker between OSU and UM? We finally have a guy who can freeze their LBs and edge defenders for a split second, and possibly sends Corum on a 60 yd run, like we've seen Dobbins, Zeke,. Hyde, etc do against us.

Cade has thrown an interception (JJ has not in the last two years throwing against D-1 talent).

Cade barely takes sacks (same with JJ except he can turn a broken play into a positive)

Cade hangs the running backs out to dry by not actually being a threat to keep the ball.

"Cade barely takes sacks (same with JJ except he can turn a broken play into a positive)"

JJ is much more of a mixed bag. He has great athletic talent, but sometimes that talent is highlighted because he uses it to get out of situations *he made*.

Look, I wish Cade had a higher ceiling; but the floor on JJ is pretty damned low and right now the people who want him to play are kind of in wishful thinking mode that once he gets in, and D's get a chance to get some queues and film on him, that he wouldn't be pressured into making alot more mistakes.

I like what they are doing with him. I think giving him the reins right now is really premature.

JJ is still learning how to make reads and not dance around the pocket and lock on one WR. JJ is still learning to consistently identify defensive schemes.

JJ is a tremendous talent and is contributing when needed—and everyone knows he is the future. The coaches have been great with getting him in and using him when and how they need. They’ve done a great job of calling plays for him and helping him grow and limit mistakes.

Cade’s ceiling is still higher than a majority of D1 QBs, including P5 teams. If Cade played on any team we have played so far, those teams may have beaten us.

Fans who want JJ only look at Cade’s limits and not the things he does better than 99% of college QBs.

That interception came after a missed penalty call for offsides against Nebraska. I am convinced that Cade threw that pass without fear of it being picked for that reason.

He represents the status of this team as a steady-as-it-goes offense led by a superior running game. Truth is, in this game particularly, victory through the ground game has always been the winning formula.

Michigan hasn't shown even with the freshman 5-star it can score at will with his arm and legs. Just the implication of that threat. That is the scary part for Sparty, the what-if prospect McCarthy represents. And that threat is more enhanced when both quarterbacks are viable to play any possession or down, not pigeonholed by score or circumstance.

Regarding the receiver group, after Bell got injured, Baldwin went from being a solid, depth-piece, 3rd option, to the number 2 guy. He caught 6 balls against Nebraska for 64 yards. Fast forward to the Northwestern game. 0 catches, 0 yards. I’m going to assume he’s battling something health-related.

Now let’s consider Roman Wilson. He has what appears to be a breakthrough game against Wisconsin, 6 catches for 81 yards. He gets hurt around that time and has 2 catches for 4 yards in the next 2 games.
My point is this, JJ cannot make the receiver group any better than Cade can if they cannot stay on the field, through no fault of their own. Injuries happen, but we’re expecting Cade to establish chemistry with a new WR practically on a weekly basis. Sorry, that’s not fair or realistic.

Teeba, JMO the rec group issues fall on Gattis.  It’s his group!  Bell going down and was obviously looking good till he went down but it was still against Western.  And no doubt he and Cade seemed to have chemistry so that hurts.

Henning and Wilson are second year players.  No excuse for them not being ready!  Henning is the best athlete on the team, 2nd yr rec running lazy rounded and drifting out route..  Not precise like he should.  In fact it’s my main disappointment with the receivers is not running precise routes setting up defenders followed next by too many drops and then not attacking the ball.

Receivers have to step up!

I dunno, it seems like a stretch to conclude "it sounds like the coaches see things similarly to how many of us on the blog do" from this clip.  Does Klatt have a bunch of insider information on the coaches?  It sounds like he's just watching the games and speculating the same way we are.

Klatt has certainly spent time talking to the coaches.  That being said, I'd imagine the coaches are pretty guarded with what they say.  Certainly not impossible that Klatt "fills in the blanks" with stuff from his own observations or filters what the coaches say to fit his preconceived notions.  So, yes Klatt has more information than the rest of us, but that doesn't mean everything he says accurately reflects the coaches' true thoughts.

So what we are getting is second hand information, i.e., the first step in the game were people sit in a circle, and one whispers something to the person next to them, and the message goes all the way around the circle. The message become something unrecognizable to the original speaker by the time it gets back to them.

Does he say that?  I'm just reading the transcript: it says he paraphrases what the coaches say, but it's not obvious to me if that means publicly or if he has a significant private conversations with them on the topic.

I'm not trying to be combative; I'm interested to know if that's the case.  It's just not obvious that we should conclude that it is from the transcript alone.

Edit: I listened to the rest of the video.  I guess he says he talked to them, for whatever that's worth.
