Harbaugh said during his press conference today that the B1G admitted to officiating mistakes in the MSU game and he was specific to the overturning of the Hutchinson TD

How about we get several things.

1  Michigan vs msu game, put the 7 back on the board and fix the result.

2  We get the osu games reviewed.

3  We get a full game officiated in our favor vs osu and then the partial favors vs osu for two more games considering the games that had the same bs but not at the same extent..

4  All officiaitng crews, head of big ten officiating are fired............Kevin Warren fired

Ha accountability for officials. Officiating is a major problem at both the FBS and pro levels and I don't know why nothing is ever done to make it better. The NFL officials at least have a union that impedes any progress ever being made - I don't know why college doesn't have more off-field officials to deal with this stuff

Yes, until there is some accountability the B1G can fuck right off.

I heard somebody say last week that they could hire permanent officials for $2 million a year? Seems low, but still given how much they generate from the Big Ten Network alone they could have permanent officials that didn't suck this bad. They again overturned a 50-50 call made on the field when they took away Selzer's catch.  They do not seem to understand the idea of clear and convincing.

What are you talking about? This thread is about Harbaugh talking about stuff that happened 2 games ago. It would have been cool to him to say it doesn't matter what they did or said, that game was a couple weeks ago and we're focusing on the Penn State game.

But gotta feed the "Michigan never loses it's always something" part of the fanbase.

Was pretty careful to point out it was not a big deal.  How dare I make a suggestion about how your words would be received by someone with BPD?  Clearly I am a fool for not knowing you were using the urban dictionary definition and not the one that would logically follow the world "surly."  Glad you find such humor in this.

So how do you know that quieter channels are more effective?  Lets just assume that those channels have been used - what changes have you noticed that affected officiating in a positive way?

I think public outcry probably had as much (or more) to do with this admission than anything done quietly.  Even if that outcry amounted to nothing more than disbelief and sarcasm, the optics of that one call were bad.

I haven't seen any evidence that officiating has been on an upward trend.  Quite the opposite!  So I'd say that the quieter channels have not been effective...

Well, there's an actual process to address officiating complaints. My recollection is that teams generally send in clips of issues or questions from each game to be dealt with in the officiating office. Any more that needs to be said can and generally should be dealt with in private, because publicly calling people out is... unseemly. It's like complaining about your management to the coworkers; gets some attention and makes the management look worse, but doesn't improve the situation.

The tangible evidence of the issue is that Harbaugh was known for showing up officials in his first two years and the result was that we got bad calls against us against OSU in a game when it mattered. Warde showing them up with a press conference would be completely out of character and wouldn't improve the situation.

A big public show griping about officials isn't going to measurably improve them; it can, quite possibly, antagonize both the officials on the field and the office responsible for managing them, making them less receptive to the actual complaints rather than more. If the goal is to actually improve the calls, that's not the best way to go about it.

Good points, but I won't always agree that private is always better.  Sometimes, public institutions need to be called out publicly when they're wrong.

I'm not convinced that Harbaugh's public vitriol in 2016 included the right things to say in a format that would gather opinions in his favor (post game tirades rarely work that way, even if I'm a MAN! about it).  But I do think a better public statement following the fine could have made a difference.  The biggest problem with officiating across the entire spectrum of sports, is the lack of transparency surrounding it.  We don't need every missed holding call discussed, but game-long biased officiating should very well be open to questions.

It might be different, though, if complaints are attached to actual reform proposals, like retaining full-time refs. Then, instead of it just seeming like pointless kvetching, it might seem more like presenting further evidence that reform is needed. Reform never happens without people first complaining about the status quo.

Nah, Harbaugh was (and probably is) disliked by every official in that '16 OSU game and the anti-Harbaugh/Michigan bias probably extends beyond that. Harbaugh was far from the only coach in the conference to "show up" the refs.

All this money and we get neither competent officiating nor any institutional accountability.

It's sad that we're in a "just win" society because Harbaugh has been more adaptable than most coaches, attempting to help his team win by making changes both personal and institutionally. His undoing will be his strategic stubborness ironically.

Generally, Stephen, you are an elite poster with excellent insight. But this post pretty much takes the cake-in a bad direction. Suggesting not one but two possible hypotheticals happening in registering your own complaint about the posters on this forum...oh my.

Otherwise, screw the conference and the officials here. So, pay Michigan a million bucks, fine the officials 5 games worth of pay and declare an MSU forfeit-and reduce their scholarships to 50 for the next five years-or just crawl back under your rock. A meaningless apology is worse than no apology.

I concur. But the response to Michigan's complaint about mistakes in calls made in the MSU game are based on league timing, not the school. Beyond that, Harbaugh actually wasted a timeout talking to the officials after the Hutchinson TD fumble recovery was overturned. Later, after the game, he was asked in a way that suggested he should have gone off on the officials from the sideline. Instead, he said he just talked to the offiicials when incidents occurred.

Remember, Harbaugh and Michigan were fined $10k after the 2016 OSU game for remarks about the officiating of that contest. So, what did the league do after that? The B1G didn't assign that crew to a Michigan game for a year. Then, sporadically afterward.

Look, the officials get strongly evaluated. They get paid pretty well per game and put in a lot of time, study and preparation in order to work league contests. Just like visiting teams, crews have to be on  site 24 hours before game time. These guys have other jobs.

Other than lack of game assignment to Michigan contests, I can't imagine what other punishment or accountability we can expect. In this case, we are looking at errors that largely resulted between the booth and the referee, who runs the crew.

He was asked if he had received a response from the big ten regarding the plays they submitted for review from the MSU game. Obviously he wouldn’t bring it up without being asked. Are people really dumb enough to think he’s bringing up the MSU officiating out of nowhere? This has to be an attempt at trolling.
