Webb on Viramontes
I know Vic is a fan favorite due to workout videos (Freddy Canteen says hi) and enthusiasm unknown to mankind, so thought I'd give some talking points from this morning's radio show - most is known but the new info may be how hard they plan to work to get Vic back. (spoiler alert - not so intensively)
tl;dr - decommit was a surprise but at this point UM has a # of targets and is not falling over itself to get Vic back in the fold due to variance between # of open spots in class vs # of targets who UM has a viable chance with. If they reconcile it will probably come after mid January after UM gets word on a good # of other targets and UM will be better able to determine if they have a spot to fit him in. So not a plan A guy at this time.
http://www.wtka.com/2012/09/06/podcasts/
- Vic is a jack of all trades recruit
- As for as Michigan was concerned a man without a position - he could be FB, QB, LB, S
- He had long expressed no real preference what position he would play in AA...then suddenly word leaked UM wouldn't allow him to play QB and he decommits. Come to find out that info wasn't correct; someone within his circle threw shade.
- UM would have allowed him the opportunity to try at QB.
- At this stage he is "one of the recruits on the board" as opposed to "THE guy" we need to get back.
- Harbaugh is visiting running backs rather than fueling up a jet to fly out to correct things with Vic.
- This is a year UM has a large # of targets and UM has more viable targets than openings right now. How hard they pursue Vic will be a function of how other guys fall (or not) in the class.
- Webb would be surprised if this was resolved in UM's favor before the coming dead period (mid Dec - mid Jan). If there is a reconciliation it would be after the dead period... as rest of the recruiting board clears up.

decommitted based ona guy "in his circle" who told him a false rumor about Michigan and then didn't confirm this with Harbaugh, then good luck at Cal to him.
I feel like this is an 80s sitcom, where somebody overhears a partial conversation, makes an incorrect assumption, and then hilarity ensues.

Ralph Furley's attempts to give sage advice always fell hilariously flat too, but yes, he was great at running with half a sentence and leaping to a very interesting conclusion about Jack Tripper and what went on in that apartment. Don Knotts really was perfect for that role on many levels.

I wouldnt call it that - I would say UM needs more open spots and some people were going to be left behind. Viramontes was not necessariy one of those that was going to be "guided away" but now that he did, that open spot - which was going to be created one way or the other- is first going to be offered to higher valued targets.
If it was not Vic, someone else would need to be ushered out of the class to make room. (And I do believe there will still be others ushered out before it is all said and done).

Really good question. Position of need, wants to enroll early which means contribute early. If we miss on others and this kid goes to Texas, well that's no good.

I think its mostly because he wants EE.
Webb says they want to give the EE to Bush Jr.
So if Bush Jr. goes FSU you may see them circle back and go back to reese. I assume they think Bush Jr could help more in 16 then reese. But that's just reading tea leaves.
I have also been surprised at the quality of teams going after reese considering guys like Magnus saying he would be a better fb than lb in Big 10. I dont think Bama has visited him but FL, TX, and NEB.

Thats what has always puzzled me.
As the need for LB's became more obvious, one would think you'd want more lottery tickets at the position and readjust resources accordingly........... Unless the coaches really feel confident in a guy or if this is a polite way to say they're not interested.
December 9th, 2015 at 1:26 PM ^
I think the Michigan coaches want to keep David in the class, they just don't have an early enrollment spot for him right now. Which means a full court press for the likes of Jones, Bush, Jackson and Kelly.

OK, here's where I have to admit my ignorance:
Is there a limit on the number of scholarship athletes who can enroll early? I was always under the impression that if a kid has fulfilled his high school grad requirements, and his HS will permit early graduation, he could enroll in the university early.
But from what I've read here, it sounds like there's a limit on the number of EE's.
Anyone care to fill in this gap in my knowledge?

Re: RB recruiting---should we be worried about Walker if the staff has started looking around? I mean is this base-covering or are we suddenly unconfident about Walker ending up at Michigan?
December 9th, 2015 at 1:35 PM ^
No he said he was visiting Walker and Kingston Davis as his top priority. Not abstract other rbs. Lorenz has said in the past Harbaugh is absolutely smitten withh Davis despite the low rating by recruiting services.
Webb did say Auburn hit it out of the park on Walker's visit so we are sending in a lot of troops including the big gun immediately after.
I wouldn't worry unless you start seeing other rbs offered but surely it would be more cool if the SEC was not involved.
December 9th, 2015 at 1:38 PM ^
the staff could be looking at rb's for a couple of reasons. Smith, Green and Johnson are entering their final year of eligibility. You're going to need some running backs to fill in departures.
Combine that with the complete disappearance of Issac as the year progressed and Houma getting time as a tail back and I think the staff realizes they have running backs on the roster to fill the depth chart, but those running backs maybe aren't exactly what they are looking for when it comes to on field performance.

I feel like the Freddy Canteen comparisons is a little skewed. There was essentially a 30 second video of Canteen doing cone drills and footwork that this board extrapolated to football because we had very little info or data on him since his high school football team had their senior season cancelled.
Vic is putting up really impressive numbers for his Norco team and his workout videos are both more comprehensive and something we use to gauge his overall work ethic, ehtusiasm, and versatility (e.g., "with that kind of athleticism, you could see him contributing at another position if QB didn't work out" vs. "he's gonna be a can't miss quarterback")
Doesn't mean he's more likely to contribute than Freddy but just wanted to call out that the enthusiasm for Vic is layered on something different than just a short clip of him bench pressing.

Maybe you are just doing it wrong
December 9th, 2015 at 1:54 PM ^
But if he is losing interest in Michigan, then it is probably not worth any travel time for the coaches to try to reel him back in. We have Peters and I'm sure there are more 3* QB prospects who could make good backups or even starters. What we need are more LB!
December 9th, 2015 at 3:54 PM ^
He lives in the LA metro, I am sure there are other good reasons for a coach or two to be in the area, so may as well stop by and see where you are with him.

at Michigan, then he is someone we can afford to lose - especially if a highly rated guy at a bigger position of need came along to take his spot. With Peters in this class and some dang good QB's already here, his spot as QB was expendable. That being said, I'd still love to see him back in this class if a spot were still there on NSD. I doubt that will happen though at this point.

Always snicker at these observations "based on the workout videos posted - said athlete has incredible work ethic". That is not work ethic. Doing stuff in front of a camera is not work ethic. Many teams get kids who post a lot of stuff and go to many events yet struggle when they have to really work out of eye of the public.
Regarding Viramontes (sp). His film shows a very athletic and sold duel threat QB at that level. It shows some LB although looking at many of the teams' film he didn't seem to be a starter (understand completely if he is the star QB). Don't see anything that would say he could definately be a safety nor fullback. A kid that plays that much QB probably wants to be a QB. Kids also say alot of stuff during the recruiting process and their decisions are often in flux.
Looks like a good QB for someone if thats the set direction he wants to go IMO. He is an outlier in terms of the types of QB's the roster is gaining (body type, build, etc)
