The most frustrating part about Simpson's free throws

Is that we aren't passing it around and he gets caught with the ball and fouls. Rather he holds the ball and goes to the line. Hopefully 2 games of almost getting burned at the end will change our end of game strategy cause would hate this to happen in a more important game

50 Pts against Prolific Prep is no joke

They're one of the top programs in the country and probably the equivalent of a D2 or D3 school.

Chatman is an interesting piece

Would have been nice to have him and/or Tyus Battle this year. Has anyone ever grad transferred back to the school they left?

Very Frustrating for those who bet on Michigan

Beilein is amazing at player development and conceptual coaching but has never been a great in game tactician.

The amount of late shot clock heroics needed because we were passing the ball around the perimeter without any clear intent can be difficult to watch at times.

Frustrating if we don't go 5 Wide

We've built a collection Blocky / Catchy TEs and Runningbacks that can't catch the ball but are yet to deploy any sort offense that flexes them into a 5 wide formation depending on the defensive alignment.  It's feels like we're stubborn at times to take advantage of matchups that are easily exploitable (particularly when you see our opponents force Mike McCray onto a runningback in coverage). We have the same potential, just haven't used it yet.

Speight had to leave the stadium

Tangentially related - was a little thrown off that Speight had to leave the stadium to get his examination and x-rays.

Feel like there is a full list of updates the stadium needs related to player health.

To me the play of the game

Was O'Korn's 25 yard pass to Gentry on 1st and 25 (where he ate the 15 yard targeting penalty).

In an alternate universe you could see that pass floating up toward the secondary and being effortlessly intercepted by the defense - confirming everything we already knew about O'Korn. Instead his playmaker made the play.

It's the distiniction between a gunslinger and a game manager and paid off today.

I don't have any expectations that we can beat Penn State or Ohio State with Speight, so I'm willing to explore any option that has any potential upside.

I like that you were super selective

And still included a game where we scored 27 points on OSU and 33 points on FSU. Two of the best defenses in the country last year.  If you want to say there is a talent discrenpency, that's fair, but hard not to credit Fisch when we averaged over 40 points a game last year and are struggling so much out of conference this year.

I also think from a pure playcalling standpoint, everyone seems to universally agree that the playcalling was much more imaginative last year, we're all just trying to isolate the reason why it's been so bad this year.

Speaking of Fisch, UCLA has scored 45, 46, and 45 points with a team that averaged less than 25 points a game last year. He also dialed up a Deep TE post from his own 1 yard line as his first play of a 99 yard touchdown drive (which felt very much like an offscript play that Michigan would have run last year).

Bring Back Fisch

Think we all fell for the narrative that Pep was going to be an upgrade, but for whatever reason the playcalling has regressed.  Maybe he's taking longer to assert himself with the playcalling.

Uche

Has there been any discussion of kicking him down to DE?  That seemed to be where his recruiting profile pointed and given the talent that is blocking his path at Viper.

Will Hagerup was the quintessential Hoke experience

It was always frustrating watching him consistently boot every punt into the endzone with Hoke smirking and saying "sometimes your leg is too big" like we were supposed to be impressed by that.

This feels like a situation

where both sides are getting exactly what they deserve

Yes.

Among all the unknown entities, this statement stood out to me as the most definitive thing Brian was willing to say.

I feel like they all have bigger arms than Rudock

so will feel like an upgrade from there.

Agreed.

Without the risk of interceptions, MSU decided that they'd live with1-2 less receptions in order to get the ball in the hands of their best offensive player. This kept him active throughout the game and was the only real rythym their offense ever established. Regardless of outcome, I think MSU would still be happy how the matchup played out.

Also, it's difficult to assign the same weight to both completions and incompletions since the outcome and payout are completely different. If you don't get intercepted, the downside of throwing the ball at JD is an incomplete pass whereas the upside can be as high as a touchdown.

I don't even think it's a weakness in his game, but it is clearly some sort of strategy.

Scroll a little further...

And there is a video of Jourdan Lewis throwing down a nasty two hand dunk. Insane athleticism for a 5'10'' CB.

Agreed.

I think the addition of McDoom and Nate Johnson re-affirming his commitment pushes players like Crawford to the outside. If we have the potential to Asasi that could also push Eubanks outside similar to Funchess.

OLB could potentially be his best position

Hudson does look a little bit like a Su'a Cravens from USC

Canteen comparisons

I feel like the Freddy Canteen comparisons is a little skewed. There was essentially a 30 second video of Canteen doing cone drills and footwork that this board extrapolated to football because we had very little info or data on him since his high school football team had their senior season cancelled.

Vic is putting up really impressive numbers for his Norco team and his workout videos are both more comprehensive and something we use to gauge his overall work ethic, ehtusiasm, and versatility (e.g., "with that kind of athleticism, you could see him contributing at another position if QB didn't work out" vs. "he's gonna be a can't miss quarterback")

Doesn't mean he's more likely to contribute than Freddy but just wanted to call out that the enthusiasm for Vic is layered on something different than just a short clip of him bench pressing.

Vic seemed like the 3 star

Vic seemed like the 3 star flier type that had the upside and a work ethic to transform into a very useful piece. His crazy workout videos had a Brian Cushing flair to them. Was really excited about his potential at linebacker.

USC dug themselves a little

USC dug themselves a little hole though putting him on leave before firing him. Essentially they ID'd there was an issue and then fired him before giving him adequate time to recover or show improvement when they had the grounds to fire him outright. This was botched in every way.

He's a little slow out of his

He's a little slow out of his stance at times but has really good quickness in steps 2-3. A lot to work with

DJ Wilson is a very interesting piece

Could have a large frontline if they decide to play Wilson at the 4

Alabama

Usesd a very similar campaign that resonated with recruits.

St. Thomas Aquinas

I'm hoping Rudock and O'Korn can start a pipeline to St. Thomas Aquinas. They've been one of the most consistent programs for turning out premium college talent. I think Ohio State has been very successful there.

The stories are 100% true

I lived near South Lake Union and frequently saw Sark, other UW coaches, and what looked like active UW players (they could have been grad assistants) drinking frequently at Joey's South Lake Union and Citrus.

The article actually undersells the incidiences, as you could easily read into the claims as a coach that had too much fun traveling on the road or at crowded bars on the weekend but it was actually much more depressing than that. I mostly saw them on Wednesdays and often there weren't many other patrons at the bar at all, but they were all incredibly intoxicated.

I'm pretty confident that I saw them there before a Thursday game as well.

Not surprised given OSU's offense.

Ezekial Elliot's number of carries is actually misleading, every Ohio State game I've watched there has been a consistent theme by the announcers about how under utilized Elliot is in OSU's offense.  For whatever reasons they tend to use him as a blocking back during critical junctures of the game rather than feeding him consistently.

The Randy Edsall Quote

When the sideline reported that  Randy Edsall told his team "we can run on these guys, we did it last year against pretty much the same players."That  couldn't have summed up the difference between Hoke and Harbaugh any more.

The very end of that clip

Where Caris just discards MAAR and then throws it down authoritatively. He's grown so much since his freshmen year.

Kalis' grade

This actually aligns with exactly with how I felt his performance went. I think his overall improvement is tremendous but a lot of people are talking about him living up to his 5 Star potential like he's a dominant linemen now. He frequenlty misses assignments on pulls and I was surprised you even gave him a +1 on Smith's long TD run. At some point you have to find someone to block.

Georgia would be a nightmare

Nick Chubb is one of the top 2 or 3 runningbacks in the country, and their biggest playmaker might actually be Sony Michel.

They replaced Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall while those guys were still on the team.

I'm more interested in seeing more Charlton than Marshall...

I would actually like to see more Taco Charlton paired with Wormley instead of Mario on obvious passing downs, probably on obvious running downs as well.

There aren't actually a bunch of Valyrian swords

In fact the book only mentions about 8-9 Valyrian Steel swords currently in Westeros and outside of House Stark (and later House Lannister forging their swords from House Stark's sword), most of the swords are scattered across houses that will probably never appear in the show because they're minor.

There are a few lost ancestral Targaryen swords that may turn up later.

Comparing leaked photos from both UA and Nike Meetings

Nike at least used a Michigan term "Those who stay will be champions" vs. Under Armor who used the generic phrase "Protect this house" which is what they have blanketed over every UA sponsored stadium.

These are not mutually exclusive models

People act like MSU has been recruiting 3 Stars by preference, taking a look at a the offer sheets of many of our 4 and 5 stars recruits (particularly many of the offensive linemen who have struggled here) and you'll see plenty of MSU Offers.

I distinctly remember during Commit-a-palooza that we were all having a good laugh because several of the recruits had just finished or cancelled visits to MSU during that weekend.

Ultimately, they've struck out and coached up what they had, but it does not mean that they've avoided recruiting those that are perceived as 5 Star or Elite recruits. It would be stupid to do so.

So...

Hecklinski should be our OL coach?

Was wondering the same thing

Also, in 2016 are we exclusively pursuing Tyus Battle at this point or are we also still going after Cassius Winston and Derryck Thornton?

Doesn't that kind of diminish your first argument

When you say that "You play when you're medically cleared to play. Not when your heart and mind think it's best."

and then you follow up with Rose, "Got hurt again because he let the mental side kill him. Not because he wasn't ready."

I'm not arguing for or against it but it just seems also like an argument for not playing until you're mentally ready.

As a casual observer

I have to state that I find talking about "traditional" weight lifting significantly more often than I do about crossfit. I think most people just tend not to think about it that way because the conversations happen more organically and are usually tangential to talking about things like sports (e.g. a coworker and I had a 5 minute conversation about bench pressing that spawned from a conversation about the NFL Draft and combine results).

The ironic thing about my conversations about Crossfit is that it usually doesn't include a single crossfitter and is usually one of my gym rat friends talking about how shitty it is.

That's actually a different hat than he's been spotted in before

So he's at least "purchased" 2 Michigan Hats

His performance is not dependent on Anthony Bennett's

But his rookie ranking is dependent on Anthony Bennett's performance. Seems pretty clear to me that he was stating that, despite playing well, in any other year they wouldn't be re-ranked as high.

I'm not sure if that's true or not, but his statement seemed clear to me.

Poor Man's Manny Harris

The only other player I can think of who was referenced as "slithering to the hole"

Lots of steals and rebounds from the guard spot.

He's also tested off the charts physically

He's also tested off the charts physically at the camps and combines he's participated in. This is also partly the reason evaluators are willing to overlook his lower level of competition.

Don't forget about Maurice Hurst Jr.

His long TD run was one of the most impressive plays any of our recruits had in high school. Good Offer list too.

Reynolds' long reception

I still think it's a Gardner under throw, looks like Reynolds has 2-3 yards of separation but slows down for the ball.

Great Play Action to Reynolds...

But looks like Reynolds had to slow down and wait for the ball. Gardner spent a lot of time selling the play action and actually didn't get the ability to drive the ball downfield because a late in-coming rusher.

Was hoping to see a downfield throw to Chesson, maybe next week!
