Vicious Vic Decommits

The MGoStaff is going to have to find a new favorite commit. Three-star CA QB/ATH Victor Viramontes decommitted last night, leaving Brandon Peters as the only quarterback in the class and, well, nobody capable of being a quarterback/fullback/linebacker. Viramontes picked up a Cal offer right around the time he decommitted; he has a better shot of sticking at QB there. I look forward to seeing him play wherever he ends up.

With so many quarterbacks on the roster, including two who redshirted from the 2015 class, it's unclear if Jim Harbaugh will feel the need to add another; Viramontes' open spot may be better served going to an additional defensive prospect, especially one at linebacker.

Devin Bush Jr. Sets Decision Date

Shortly after receiving an in-home visit from JIm Harbaugh, four-star FL ILB Devin Bush Jr. set his announcement date for December 16th. Michigan has long felt good about their standing with Bush, who plans to enroll early at the school of his choice. Auburn and Florida State are M's biggest competiton; Bush's father played at FSU, but he's also become close with Harbaugh and Co. after hosting one of last summer's satellite camps.

Gary's Mom Calls Muschamp "A Pure Liar"

Auburn has been considered Michigan's primary competition for five-star NJ DT Rashan Gary, but the departure of defensive coordinator Will Muschamp for the head job at South Carolina may have taken them out of the race. Gary's mom unloaded on Muschamp—calling him "a pure liar"—in an interview with 247's Keith Neibuhr, and while she stays she still "love[s] Auburn," their chances don't look good:

The question now: Can Auburn remain a contender?

"I don’t know,” Coney said. “I'm in the business world. If you bring representatives to me and one of your representatives tells you a blatant lie and almost immediately you find out they’re lying, well, what does that say about your organization?” Coney said. “In doing that, you make Auburn look bad. I’m not saying anything bad about Auburn. I like Auburn. I can see my son at Auburn. But these things happen for a reason. It just made me and Rashan realize, do not commit because a coaching staff is great. You cannot depend on these people. Am I upset at Auburn? No. I’m hoping they’re telling the truth when they said they were blindsided by this. I’d think they’d be smarter than to send him on a recruiting trip knowing he wasn’t going to be there. Thompson and (defensive line coach Rodney Garner) could have come.”

Coney added that she hadn't yet heard from Alabama or Georgia, which both had staff shakeups, but Jim Harbaugh called her Thursday to discuss DJ Durkin's departure. As I said last week, I don't expect Durkin's departure to impact Gary's recruitment.

Tight End Recruiting: Another Name To Consider

Five-star GA TE Isaac Nauta remains Michigan's top target at tight end—and right up there with Gary overall—but the Wolverines will have to wait for him to announce a top three on December 20th before getting word of a decision, one that may very well go Georgia's way.

Four-star FL TE Jacob Mathis is the most realistic backup option, especially if Nauta surprises and winds up at Florida. While this recruit's name hasn't come up in a long time, Jay Harbaugh had an in-home with four-star FL TE Nick Eubanks, who told 247's Steve Lorenz he's now considering a trip to Ann Arbor ($):

Eubanks, who has held a Michigan offer for months, has been recruited consistently by the staff but has long been considered a player that will eventually stay down south to play his college football. A December visit from Harbaugh has him potentially re-thinking that possibility.

"Coach Harbaugh showed me how they have used their tight ends," he said. "It's a focal point of their offense and it's an offense that allows tight ends to make plays. I'm thinking about coming up there now."

Eubanks seems like a longshot, but if a trip materializes you never know what can happen.

More 2016 Updates: Walker Has A Final Five

Five-star NJ RB Kareem Walker discussed his final five schools and visit plans with Scout's Brian Dohn:

"Florida State visit. I'm catching a flight in a little while," Walker said Saturday. "Ole Miss isn't (under consideration) any more. Just Florida State, Arizona State, Michigan, Alabama and Auburn. I have Florida State now and Arizona State next week, if I don't have to take the ACT. I'm not for sure on that yet."

Walker already made official vists to Michigan, Alabama and Auburn. He is visiting Florida State this weekend and with the visit to Arizona State, it would mean his trips are over.

Walker will be an early enrollee, so a decision will come in the relatively near future. Michigan is still widely considered the favorite.

Three-star FL WR Eddie McDoom is taking an official visit in January and is strongly considering Michigan, but for now he's got another program out in front, per Scout's Corey Bender:

"I have an official to Oregon for the first week of January," McDoom said. "I think I'm taking three visits. I think I'm pushing towards Georgia (for my last visit), but I don't know yet.

"I guess Oregon would be my top school right now."

He doesn't sound dead-set on that, at least.

Jim Harbaugh made a savvy recruiting move when he bumped Chris Partridge up to interim linebackers coach for the bowl game; that distinction allows Partridge to recruit off-campus, and by the time the announcement was made he was already in Florida doing an in-home with four-star LB Jonathan Jones, per Lorenz ($). Partridge should be very active on the recruiting trail until the dead period begins in a week.

Yeah, I think people fell in love with his film and the potential, but I always thought it was weird him coming in as a QB prospect, and so if you are switching him to LB you already have a bit of an uphill climb given his HS usage.  He looks like a good player and I think he'll compete at Cal for a spot, but the likelihood is that he'll make a switch wherever he winds up.

I wish him the best, but yeah, this isn't a huge loss.

That's always easy to say after a player is no longer committed. Look at Ohio State, they no longer consider Walker that type of player. Viramontes could be an impact player at multiple positions and that's why people were so high on him. With that said, we can live with any recruit choosing to go elsewhere. Michigan will be fine.

Oh yeah, Michigan will be fine! Players don't make any real difference, right?!

Going 2-13 vs osu hasn't been any big deal...

I posted in the VV decommit post at great length defending his decision to go somewhere he was promised a shot at QB - but I'm not gonna pretend it doesn't hurt us to NOT have him here at all. Kid coulda played and contributed at several spots - including possibly QB. Are your JT Barrett nightmares already going away?

Wish him well, hope he goes Pac12...

JT was a 4 star top 300 recruit with interest from alabama and an offer from lsu, not to mention ohio state.  Viramontes has offers from cal, colorado, wisconsin, and nebraska.  He is a d1 player but he isn't anywhere near the quality of qb barrett was coming out of high school and he isn't as good as a lb recruit as devin bush is.  So I'd rather get devin bush and stick with peters as the qb recruit in this class.  Not uspset about this decommit at all, we have too many guys who are better than this on the board and not enough spots for them.

Players make a difference but not any ONE player. So yes, we'll be fine. Whatever position he was destined to play there's another player out there who can fill the void and he will be signed. People freaked out over Hand and McDowell then guess what? We fielded a damn good D-Line anyway. Missed out on Treadwell and other top WRs but guess what? Fielded a damn good receiver core. You can choose to freak out after every decommitment or lost recruitment if you'd like, though. Enjoy that.

I'm STILL freaked out over McDowell, and if we had him we might be in msu's spot now instead of them!

And as for whether Barrett or VV had better offers coming out of HS - completely irrelevant to my point. If VV was osu's QB against us they'd have still kicked our ass!  He's a threat!

He could end up at LB or FB or who knows at some other school, but that school is gonna give hima a chance to play QB 1st. RichRod could do something with him, Whittingham too. Huskers... list goes on.

Not suggesting he's irreplaceable, but he wasn't taking D. Bush's spot or anyone else's on our board for that matter. If we come up with some commit that isn't on anyone's best guess list currently then we can call that player the one who took VV's spot.

THEN we can compare how their college careers arc vs each other.

I'm just saying the kid could've helped us in some way - wish him well, but he will be missed in some way.

People keep saying he could have been an impact player at multiple positions.  He is a 3 star with a middling offer sheet and doesn't appear to have elite athelticism and moslty falls under the 'tough' category.  Sure that could have turned into something but he doesn't really scream impact player.  Not to mention if the staff felt that strongly about him sticking around I think he would still be in the class, he wasn't going to get a shot at qb and moved on, if they wanted him they probably would have promised a shot at qb and kept him in the fold.  We have other needs in this class and I'd prefer to take an actual lb recruit with that spot rather than a guy who could wind up at lb after he doesn't make it as a qb.

Ok ak, you just changed the entire discussion... WHO is that LB we're getting that we weren't gonna have room for because of VV? Reese?

Using your logic, if the staff cared that much about him they'd be acquiesing to his wishes as well?!

If we weren't gonna take Bush or Jackson because of VV then I'd agree with you, but that's not the case. Now, if it's J.Jones, rated like 500th or so nationally (I only bring this up because you and others refer repeatedly to VV's starz & offers) who gets VV's spot, then I'd rather have VV. More versatile is all.  And that may very well be the case because Partridge went straight to Jones' house right after they hung up the phone with VV.

That simple!

For me, I'm bummed because (a) he seemed like a denard level entertaining guy who will be a blast to cheer for and (b) he seemed like a pretty unique athlete would could do some great things.  He's not an elite prospect, but the kind of high upside guy I was looking forward to cheering for. I agree, he's not a top level, critical talent (although I think his tape was better than his ranking), but he seemed like the kind of guy who would be very good to have on the team.

Agreed, was really looking forward to getting his athleticisim and versatility on campus and seeing where it shook out.  I do feel like it's a loss for the class and am interested in seeing A) where he ends up and B) how the staff mitigates this.

I do worry a little bit that they're aiming so high they may be left holding the bag towards the end of this cycle, but this is the fun of big boy recruiting.

Yes you are.

And how about Kareem Walker. He's potentially taking his ACT next weekend (this weekend?) and enrolling at a university in three weeks? What a world we live in.

And if he has to retake the ACT what are the chances admissions wont take him even as an athlete? Maybe hes retaking it because they already know his current score isnt enough.

IIRC, the last ACT test before December is in September, so he should already know his score. The retake is probably based on if his chosen school approves it. Now, why he wouldn't already know what that score has to be is strange.

During his introductory press conference at South Carolina, Muschamp said former Florida president Bernie Machen had a simple message for him.

“Clean it up,” Muschamp said Machen told him about the football program.

Meyer was wildly successful with the Gators, but earned criticism for a high number of off-the-field incidents and arrests.

(not earth-shattering, of course; not really much else at the link either... but thought it was interesting re: Meyer)

I've read all the rants but I really appreciate seeing those who wish the kid well in his endeavors. Now let's focus on the other priorities to build on one heck of an awesome first season. Harbaugh.

Say it ain't so!!! Was so looking forward to seeing him a winged helmet. Oh well, wish him the best.

If UM had to lose Vicious Vic, then getting Eddie McDoom would be of benefit in the "name" department.

and not surprising to me in the least given which school we're talking about.  All the better for us.

Viramontes leaving the fold is sad, but actually can create another opportunity to bring in a top player the rest of the way.  Maybe Michigan can go for another LB or OL to create even more depth.  Or possibly an extra talented DB is ready to commit.  It seems we really won't need him at QB with the guys already here or coming in.  Either way, I wish him the best of luck.

I mean, you could argue that M did the same thing. They had Durkin recruiting basically until he left and at least one recruit (Dontavious Jackson) was under the impression that he wasn't going anywhere as of the day before Maryland announced him as their head coach. I'm happy it seems to have helped us with Gary, but I don't understand what you're trying to say about Auburn losing their DC basically the same way M did.
