"Rutgers was the crown jewel of conference expansion"

For your morning enjoyment and hilarity...

Between a top-10 recruiting base, a lack of any meaningful in-state competition, a powerhouse conference, the biggest media market in the country, and a rabid, growing fanbase, Rutgers is poised to join the upper echelon of college football dynasties in the 2020s.

This has caused a fair share of angst throughout the Midwest. As Rutgers rises and traditional power programs fall (looking at you Nebraska), the football world has experienced some pretty serious cognitive dissonance. This can't be right they say. So hands are wrung, excuses are made, and facts are swept aside.

"Rutgers was the crown jewel of conference expansion.

No other school combined the desirable traits that conferences wanted to the same degree. No other school has the potential and no other school would be as excited to join the Big Ten. It's the perfect acquisition and one that will pay dividends to both parties for decades."

And your piece-de-resistance...

"Rutgers is poised to become the LSU of the Northeast."

I DO NOT WANT Michigan to become the "next Alabama"!

Instead, I prefer that Alabama's goal is to be as good as Michigan.

And with Harbaugh guiding us, I don't think it'll be long before 'Bama is looking up in the polls and playoff standings and seeing us as the team standing in their way.

What in the actual fuck are they talking about? Maryland was a better addition (and not even a good one), because you know, they are actually good at one or two sports.

Rutgers has access to money and a huge recruiting base. As the school grows, it's fan base grows too. It's already academically at the level of all the B1G schools except for UM and NW. I'd rather be in a club with Rutgers than MSU, that's for sure.

I have no doubt that plenty of people get a very good education at Rutgers. However, your assertion that it's considered to be at the level of all conference schools other than UM and NW is just laughably wrong by every rating organization that's not affiliated with the school.

So one of the historically, (and reigning,) worst athletic departments in america will soon become one of the best, because the writer says so, and anybody who passes out from laughing too hard at him is a victim of "cognitive dissonance." Dude.

Rutgers has definite potential and the author I think is just being positive about that. His timeline is the 2020s...so give it 10 years. Not today.

I would be more interested in seeing if there are dozens of other positively written articles appearing like this over the next few years as Rutgers fans have been notoriously depressed regarding their program. If positivity continues, then that may sway a few recruits and a few donors to continue to support the program and it grows.

There's no "insurmountable" reason that Rutgers can't be a solid top 25 team perenially in the 2020s. Yes, they've screwed it up in the past, and they could use a top-5 coach, but they will be getting more money from the Big 10, too, to bolster their program.

I personally think they are in a stronger program position than even a year ago.

Odds of a Rutgers dynasty? Tiny. But is there potential? Yes.

Does Michigan have more potential? Yes, of course.

But the author of that piece is fucking retarded.  Over and over he keeps saying that Rutgers is on the rise, without giving a single piece of evidence to back that up.

Probably because there isn't any.  Rutgers sucks.  At everything.

This guy is grasping at straws that just aren't there. And most of his arguments actually worked against him! I'll give him this; there is tremendous potential for Rutgers to be a decent program. The problem is that current leadership has no clue how to tap into that potential.

What he does not get is that Delany didn't expand to bring Rutgers and MD into the Big Ten.  He expanded to bring the Big Ten into NYC and DC.

Every year now a parade of Big Ten schools make their way to the NYC and DC area, and also occupy TV slots in those areas.  That's what he was going for.

He does not care about Rutgers or MD per se, he's just renting their stadiums.

Rutgers will eventually be removed when they fail to meet academic requirements, I believe. The university presidents must still have some say there.
