Piped in music getting ridiculous
Ok I'm all for it when it gets the crowd loud (Seven Nation Army, RAWK), but Sexy and I know it? Really? I don't know any of the other stuff they played besides Sweet Caroline and Don't Stop Beliving but it was all pretty terrible and it really didn't help with atmosphere at all.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:46 PM ^
I agree. It's nonsense and it needs to die.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
It's impossible to please everyone. More news coming up at 11.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:47 PM ^
I wish that we wouldnt play piped in music every other down, and it gets in the way of the crowd noise on third down if everybody's chanting 7 nation army instead of just yelling as loud as they can.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:48 PM ^
Seven Nation Army was played no less than 10 times. It was awful.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:03 PM ^
That's positively average for a home game now. Against Minnesota I counted 6 in the first quarter alone.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:40 PM ^
but on the opening kickoff? if seven nation army has a place, it is later in the game. i could even live with it being played on a big 3rd down, though i'd rather people just yelled. but if seven nation army is required on the first play of the game to get us pumped up, something is seriously wrong with our fan base.

yet. a reasonable alternative- why doesn't the MMB play seven nation army instead of pumping it in?
October 30th, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
The Jay-Z/Kanye track they kept trying to play sounded like it was being played through someone's after-market subwoofers in their '03 Dodge Neon after they've blown their speakers trying to be cool.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
can we stop whining about piped in music...how about we get our keys out and jingle them like idiots....piped in music is here to stay just deal with it and stop being blue hairs about it.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:56 PM ^
I like the piped in music. I'm just saying, the playlist they came up with yesterday was terrible.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
I don't like watching football games and hearing music and think "Oh, that sounds just like the Big House"
October 30th, 2011 at 2:19 PM ^
October 30th, 2011 at 2:21 PM ^
We should not use PSU as a model. Pretty much all they do is play piped-in music. Even after a TD, they play Zombie Nation.
Personally, I don't really care about the playlist. I want the piped-in music to be used sparingly, when the MMB isn't available.

One thing I noticed about the USC-Stanford game is the band was playing *a lot* more than it was during the Michigan game and they sounded great.
Why doesn't the MMB learn some songs in addition to the ones they know, and play those instead of having piped in music?
Music-wise, my takeaways from the 2 games were:
- USC - great sounding band
- Michigan - 7 Nation Army. (Besides The Victors and Temptation, which are obviously great. But why can't the band also learn other songs and play those instead of the piped in shit? 7NA is played out and boring at this point. Same with Don't Stop Believin'.... (aka "OMG ppl, they're about to say "South Detroit" so let's scream it real loud b/c we're from Michigan... even though South Detroit doesn't exist!!" Lame.)
October 30th, 2011 at 2:27 PM ^
Pretty much just plays "Fight On" every 5 seconds.
It's one of the most annoying things in all of college football.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:47 PM ^
Actually, the one you hear the most is called "Tribute to Troy". It has the slow march beat to it like gladiators marching to war. It is the second part of a three song compilation that together makes up the USC "song".
"Fight on!" is part 3. It is more up beat and is played a lot after first downs and touchdowns. You'll hear "Tribute to Troy" many more times during the course of the game. I like USC but I won't disagree with you on the annoying part. They take the band on all the trips too. It really annoys home crowds.

If you care to listen to the whole thing together, the annoyingly overplayed "Tribute to Troy" is at :40. "Fight On" is at 1:40.
No matter how many times it is played, it beats piped-in music. Sadly, it is the way of the world at these games.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:36 PM ^
Maybe the problem could be solved with better microphones on the MMB curtosy of ESPN2.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:41 PM ^
I don't think USC's band plays more total songs than ours does. As far as I can tell, they just play their fight song, that Trojan chant thing, and the "Charge!" song over and over.
Yesterday, during the game, the MMB played "The Victors," "Let's Go Blue!," "Intimidation," "Temptation," "Respect" (I think), "Lose Yourself," the Caribbean Victors, the Blues Brothers song and I think at least one other one I can't remember. It's not the number of songs, but the frequency of playing that is key. The problem is simply that we kept on piping in "Seven Nation Army" before defensive third downs, so it was easy to miss all the times the MMB did play.
October 30th, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
USC's band is not a good example to follow by any means. They play the same two songs 13 billion times throughout the entire game. That Conquest/Men of Troy thing they do is played so often that it's become a running joke with the rest of the PAC 10 opponents. When USC's band starts playing it, they sing along with the words, "This is the only song we know, the only song we know, the only song we know." They're as bad as Florida State's band and that stupid Braves cheer which they play after every down no matter what's happened (20 yard gain or 20 yard loss).
I'm glad our band has a little more variety.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:32 PM ^
Yeah I think you're right about the total # of songs MMB plays vs. USC band. The main point I was getting at above was that USC's band sounded much better than hearing 7NA piped in.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
I'd rather have all piped in music than those sunglass wearing one song playing idiots. You could've named almost any other band and you would have had a better point.
October 30th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
South Detroit is Windsor
October 30th, 2011 at 11:51 PM ^
That's not how you spell 'Mexicantown'.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:32 PM ^
You sir, know nothing about Marching Bands. The USC band is one of the least musical and least least liked bands in the nation, and that includes from their own fans.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:50 PM ^
MMB already knows both of those songs, among many other would-be piped-in alternatives.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:16 PM ^
is the proper attitude. The piped in music will go NOWHERE. But, they play what they play because it's what everybody plays. If you want better stuff, send them recommendations.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:55 PM ^
Agree and Agree! How do I get that gig anyway? I will rock that place and you wont hear the same song twice/ game! Anyone with connections to the press-box staff... let me know. I'd be happy to improve the atmosphere!

October 30th, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
year they seemed to have found a nice mix, but yesterday was atrocious.
On the plus side I did catch Denard head bobbing to one song, including after the song was over while lining up for a snap. He then proceeded to run for about 30 yards.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:50 PM ^
I had no qualms with sexy and I know it, but then again i like having an excuse to do the hip thrust motion.
Seven Nation Army every down is the most annoying thing in the world
October 30th, 2011 at 10:06 PM ^
It wouldn't be such an annoyance if they didn't play it 10 times per quarter, but instead of pumping people up, everyone around me groans whenever it's played now.
I don't understand who thinks it's a good idea to keep blasting the same 3 songs the entire game.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:52 PM ^
Get off my lawn, rabble rabble. It's gonna happen. Not that big of a deal.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
Every time we substitute "The Victors" for "In the Big House", we are essentially replacing the near-concensus greatest fight song of all time for the toadstools of queefcore. To me this is a big deal.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:59 PM ^
On that note, I don't think "In the Big House" was played yesterday. Or if it was, it must have been during the pregame.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:03 PM ^
I never heard "In The Big House" once yesterday.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:34 PM ^
i heard it from outside the stadium about 30-40 minutes before kickoff.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
If we have to play it, play it a couple times per drive, and not more. Most of the people here complaining about it are in favor of night games and new scoreboards, and not blue hairs.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:55 PM ^
its so...EVERYBODY ELSE!!!...Id much rather iisten to our band anytime, anyday anyplace...
ENOUGH with the piped in music
October 30th, 2011 at 1:59 PM ^
What would you recommend they play to get the crowd fired up? Because it was pretty god damn awesome during the Notre Damn Game. The crowd was pretty STALE yesterday...i guess you can blame that on Purdue.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:01 PM ^
I can't tell if that's a typo or if you did it on purpose. Either way it's awesome.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:15 PM ^
Jesus Lizard, Massive Attack, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, Wire, Gang of Four, James Brown, The Pogues, etc.

Just curious, what Massive Attack and Mastodon tracks are you thinking of? Big fan of both groups.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:32 PM ^
The crowd was fired up when there wasn't piped in music going on key plays in the ND game.
