Paterno family to conduct their own review

Paterno family to conduct their own independent review of the independent review conducted by PSU.

Just when I thought this story couldn't get any uglier, it does. In other news, the Paterno family is also vowing to find the real killer in the OJ Simpson murder trial.

Joe covered his butt and the teams butt. That is all that anyone can conclude from this. Yea he gave a million here and there but made millions while poor kids were raped by a perv he could have stopped.  Sorry he was a scumbag, nothing less.

I feel like this is a bit arrogant of the Paterno family. The Freeh report comes out and because it came to the conclusion that Joe Paterno knew about more than what he said intially, that apparently means that you feel the need to start your own investigation? No matter what weird way they try to spin that Paterno didn't know about it he is still going to look guilty in public opinion. The Paterno's need to move forward from this and not look back as much as possible.

This is literally the worst thing they could do. It's rapidly going to turn them from potentially sympathetic figures who see their husband/father's legacy crumbing around them shortly after his death into clowns, as well as costing substantial amounts of money.

That apple (Jay) did not fall far from the tree.  Just pretend that your dad was a feeble old man that couldn't recognize what was going on around him; pretend that he didn't have the authority, or the power to stop Sandusky; pretend that the grand experiment was working; pretend that you had success with honor.  Jay Paterno is a fool.

You nailed it.

I felt some sympathy for them because of how wrenching this all must be.  That sympathy has evaporated in the last week.  Their lack of concern for Sandusky's victims borders on disgusting and their timing of their outreach is lousy.  Their handling of this looks ham-fisted.  Put a sock in it, Paterno family.  If you really think there is much legacy to be saved, then start doing that quietly.

Do they really think that anyone will take the results of this report seriously? Of course it's going to come out in Paterno's favor, then everyone in Happy Valley can high five each other and keep selling their Joe Pa shirts and memorabilia. This is just sick.

With all this stuff going on, Black Shoe Diaries makes an attack on Brian and MgoBlog a priority. Sorry can't link. Just see today's lead posting, if interested.

of denial about what happened at PSU have gone to die. And let's face it, stuff this horrible takes a while for many of us to work out of our systems. But if I'm a thoughtful PSU fan at this stage, I am thinking that shutting down the football program for a few years might be the only way to--one day--arrive at an end point where the world feels you've paid for the crime. Denial, obfuscation--these may be some of the stages of the grieving process--but if you remain in them people will really start to hate you.

The world will be sick of the conversation, but it won't be rid of its disgust for the institution.

Added thought: I don't think the family's opinion means almost anything at this point. I don't think the media should pay almost any attention.

Too many press releases, now the investigation. It's obvious they're trying everything they can to prop up Joe's legacy and they apparently could not give a crap about any of the kids because it appears they're spending every last dime JoePa made on lawyers to try to keep JoePa's name untarnished. It's unfortunate that all those kids had to inconvenience their family so much

This is like an Ahmadinejad review of the holocost.   The only people who are going to believe this report are the ones that already don't believe the Freeh report.   For everyone else, if the Paternos are trying to make their name anathema, they are doing a fine job of it.

complete the investigation and then publish their biased report fast.

Penn State kicks off the 2012 football season at noon September 1 against Ohio U. (Bobcats). Once the new football season gets rolling, nobody will much care for what the Paterno family has to say, and anything published will sound like whiny drivel anyway...  Also, the tidal wave of civil lawsuits will by then be piling up on the univ. president's desk.

in the desperation mode.  They're seeing Joe Pa's reputation disintegrating with each passing day and figure they have nothing left to lose.  Their best hope based on the evidence is that they'll confuse some people for a while longer by trying to cast doubt on the Freeh report findings.  The sad thing is that in the end, JP will still be exposed as one of the prime cover-up architects.

They're still grieving over Joe Paterno's death and the ongoing assault on his character/legacy.  Getting defensive is a normal response, but they and many PSU fans have missed the point entirely.

Imagine what good could instead come from a formal acknowledgement of the report findings, and a future commitment use Paterno's immense fortune to help victims of sexual abuse?

At this point in the chain of events, spending vast amounts of money on an investigation of the investigation, is just wrong-mindedness.

The family could have still been a positive leadership force for PSU as they try to recover, instead they're just adding to the building stereotype of this sick, strange, twisted, and delusional little town and it's football program

I have a question.  In Pennsylvania, by statute, probably lobbied for by the board of trustees and having been in existence for some time, several universities do not have to comply with FOIA requests, including Penn State.  Transparency? Ha.

How then does Paterno's family get access to the information.  They (the estate) is not a litigant in a pending civil action, at least not yet, so they cannot get documents through discovery.  Would they have any more right to the information than any other party who makes a request for same?  Or are they just given the info because Paterno was such a fine, upstanding guy?

Anyone have an answer?

I want to know the truth, but who should I trust?  On one hand I have an FBI investigation and in the other, a Paterno funded family investigation.

Are these people nuts?

I think they should save their money for the inevitable law suites, but what do I know?

I have (some) experience with spin doctors and while there are a few ways to skin this cat (Lion?) the probable one here is to prove a nearly irrelevant point (i.e. "Joe Paterno was not on campus when the alleged 'cover up' was engineered" or something equally banal and/or narrow that it exhonerates JoePa). Having succeeded in proving that JoePa wasn't copied on the emails wherein the parties agreed to cover up the Sandusky rapes, the family will start a PR campaign to demonstrate that JoePa couldn't possibly have been covering up the facts in the Sandusky child rapes. And, they will probably also find that there were no documents (i.e. meeting minutes) from any of the other three "leaders" wherein JoePa explicitly said, "Don't go public", "look the other way", etc.

Why? Because the Freeh investigation had access to more than three million documents covering the time period in question. Of course, some of those documents will be re-used by the Paterno family investigation, but only those that serve their (narrow) purpose.

Penn State sent out a news release about an hour ago saying the PSU student organization in charge of what was Paternoville is changing the name to Nittanyville.

The pressure is getting to PSU in certain measures.

Here's a link to a USA Today story. They were the first main outlet on top of the story.

for his death and betrayal. So it will take time to go through the stages: 1. Shock 2. Denial 3. Anger 4. Sadness/depression 5. Acceptance just as it will take time for Happy Valley. and then the statue will come down and the mural painted over.
