OT: Costly win for Nevada

Submitted by mxair23 on

I came across this article today and enjoyed reading it. I felt we could use some other topics to discuss.

At the time of Nevada's win I was estatic because Boise got beat in a great come from behind OT game. I never once thought of the implications of Nevada winning. I wonder if the win was worth it?

He was historically as solid as they come, and both of the kicks he missed were pretty easy. Instead, he’ll be remembered as the Bill Bucker of Boise.

I'd wager that there isn't one AD in the WAC crying all that much about this fact.

Boise stuck it to the WAC when they announced they were leaving for the MWC.  Nevada beating them to keep them out of the BCS and, possibly, the MNC was a nice going away (errr, F.U.) present.

On a related note, the past week has been rough for Boise.  First the loss; then TCU bolts for the Big East.  It can be argued that the MWC, less Utah, TCU and Nevada, is an inferior conference to the WAC.

"Boise stuck it to the WAC when they announced they were leaving for the MWC."

I think this is an extreme take on the situation. People in the WAC undoubtedly understand their league is not the strongest in the country. Boise obviously has institutional aspirations to be a nationally-relevant program at the highest level of the game, much like they were in I-AA ball. This is just the business - BSU has parlayed their experience into an invitation up the ladder, they didn't cheat or otherwise denigrate the conference, and there should be no hard feelings.

It's pretty sour-grapes for other WACers to say "don't let the door hit you on the way out." I mean, Boise State did bring the WAC two BCS bowl berths and the millions of dollars that come with it.

Boise St. is def not getting what they wanted out of  realignment, though. The MWC with BYU, TCU, Utah, Boise St., Nevada, and Fresno St.  would be vastly superior to the Big East. Now it's just the top tier WAC teams (BSU, Nev., Fresno) replacing BYU, TCU, and Utah as the top tier MWC teams. All in all, just a lateral move for BSU.

The WAC is screwed though. They're almost down to Sun Belt level now.

You do know that Nevada, Fresno State, and Hawaii are also joining the MWC in 2012, yes?  I would say that even with the departures of TCU, BYU, and Utah, the MWC will still be stronger than the WAC ever was.  However, it could have been a really good conference, and probably worthy of the Big East's auto-bid had Utah, BYU, and TCU stayed.  Either way, it's still the best non-AQ conference (starting in 2012) with Boise, Nevada, Fresno, Hawaii, SDSU, and Air Force headlining, but probably not good enough now to take the BE's auto-bid.

since my comment makes absolutely no sense under those circumstances, it is obvious that I was oblivious to the full details of the conference reallignment.

I blame alcohol, or my wife, or my kids..... anything other than my own ineptitude.

I think, and certainly hope, that Nevada would gladly take the win. Besides, would anyone be talking about Nevada had they gone down to Boise? They'd just be another team that lost to Boise. Everyone in that program has a moment they will never forget now and I think that is priceless.

That and Nevada fans HATE Boise State.  Mainly because of the way that Boise State fans act when they comedown to Reno.  Think of Michigan St. fans only even more white trash.

Kaepernick and Ault also needed a victory over BSU to put a capper on Kaepernick's career and to justify Ault taking over the program for the second time.

That was the first thing I thought too. Obviously the business end of college football is important and drives a lot already, but that it's less an issue than pro sports is still something I like about college sports. I was annoyed listening to John Saunders and Jesse (Palmer?) doing this same thing. I believe it was about Boise. They showed highlights of the loss and then all they talked about was how much money Boise just lost. Who gives a damn? It was a great game, I wish I had gotten to see it.

You play to win the game.  Maybe Nevada shouldn't have lost to Hawaii.  Besides, now there's no longer any debate about whether Boise State deserves to be in the national championship game.

Does anyone think that the refs iced the kicker by reviewing the catch? I understand that had to make sure the catch was the correct call, but I think that it gave the kicker more time to think about it. Just a thought.

The day teams decide to not try to win their biggest games because they have an eye on a financial payoff is the day college football officially becomes just another pro league with slower smaller players.

We're already heading in that direction, at least try to delay it a little bit.
