Totally not related or problematic, we swear!

Counter point: Iowa had no threat through the air last year and teams were able to load up on the run.  Adding a competent QB and passing target all of a sudden puts more fear in the opposing DC, which should also open up some run lanes.  While I don't expect them to be world beaters, Iowa should be markedly better on offense next year.

Assuming the defense remains stout, I would think that Iowa should be a contender, if not favored, for the West crown.

My hunch is that one of…

My hunch is that one of those 8 will turncoat and get a great deal for themselves to be included in one of the SEC/B10.  The other 7 will then be short of votes and get left behind.

Am I just old or did I miss something?  What did he say that warrants a "Dude..." response?

Truly sad news.  Far, far…

Truly sad news.  Far, far too young, especially for someone who, from an outsider's perspective, was more than just a model citizen off the court, but did exemplary work with those that are less fortunate (the Lacey story while he was in college being the most prominent).

He has more experience at…

He has more experience at being better than anyone else at it before.  What suggests to you that he won't be the best at it in the NIL era, as well?

I get the sentiment around…

I get the sentiment around Saban being a cheater, but another way to look at this is that he has been the best at taking advantage of what the system has to offer (since the NCAA historically has done little to curb bag payments).

I take this as more of a warning than anything; Nick Saban and the Alabama program are more than equipped to, as he puts it, "buy players" with the best of them.  If the mess that is NIL right now is not streamlined into some sort of orderly system, Nick is going to do what he has historically done and be the best at this mess.

1 minor point of correction …

1 minor point of correction - his net worth is almost certainly over 9 figures at this point.  Decent chance in another decade, if he has invested well, that it will be pushing 10 figures.  Thinking about that amount of money for "just" a good-to-great quarterback is absolutely mind-bottling.

I'm with you and Darker Blue and appreciate this list a lot.

One minor nitpick - The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me is the best Brand New album, and I'll gladly die on that hill!

I was at that game!  Very…

I was at that game!  Very forgettable, except for a few years later I had to look it up to see if Big Ben played once he was in the league.  I was confident that day that I'd be watching a longtime NFL QB playing... just expected that it'd be Henson and not the guy that I couldn't pronounce playing for the MAC team on the other side of the ball.

Completely agreed.  Give the kids a chance to enjoy a trip like that.  Also, me at 12 years old staying up late to watch that game was so much fun.

Side note - If I recall correctly, wasn't that in the era where you could get a 12th game (standard schedules were still 11 games, I believe) for traveling out to Hawaii that we took advantage of that year?

I agree with your entire…

I agree with your entire premise.  My only issue is your last sentence; I think the majority of people agree with this and see the world for what it is: not fair or equitable.  There are some (very vocal) people that disagree or have a hard time seeing this, but the vast majority of people are on the same page when it comes to what equality means.

I don't think it's possible to get more tax-friendly than the state of Texas... they have no state income tax.

Quick point of contention - Michigan was 9-0-3 in 1992, not 9-3.  His overall record was 44-13-3.  Not sure that really changes your point, though.

Rules are meant to be broken! This is a big game. We may want to let this one slide

It would be more meaningful

It would be more meaningful were they to look at all NFL two deep rosters.

I dunno, good question I

I dunno, good question I suppose.  Appling is damn good.  Dawson is talented but a little gimpy after his injury last year.  He is getting stronger.  Nix and Payne are definitely talented big men, but also look lost at some points (as most big men under Izzo do).  Harris is as talented as he was billed.  I mean, they have pieces, it is just a matter of putting it together.  Izzo tends to make it work once February/March roll around.

I agree on Minnesota, I do like their team. I actually think that Iowa may come up and not Illinois down another peg.  I am not sold on that Illini team.

I'll take a stab at it:
1.

I'll take a stab at it:

1. Michigan - Obviously

2. Indiana - Really a 1a, I will be shocked to see them lose at Assembly Hall this year.

3. Michigan St. - Too much talent and coaching to continue to look mediocre all year.

--------------------------

4. Ohio St. - Same as I'm sure everyone else feels - how do they score if Thomas is taken away?

5. Minnesota - Scary talent that could move up the list if they put it together.  Coaching is obviously good here, too.

6. Illinois - Can they continue to be as explosive as they have?  Unlikely.

--------------------------

7. Iowa - Talented young team.  Will scare people.

8. Wisconsin - Go away Bo Ryan.

9. Northwestern - Crawford injury really hurts this team.

This is where the teams are just plain awful:

10. Nebraska

11. Purdue

12. Penn State

As a former D-2 football player

I can attest to how true this is. D-2 players aren't as exposed to steroids as D-1. I personally know guys who played at 4 different Big Ten schools that were using steroids. I am from Michigan and graduated from hs in 2004 if that helps narrow down 2 of those schools for you...

"People treat a playoff as if

"People treat a playoff as if it's more definitive than a regular season game, but why is that so?  The winner of a tournament is nothing more or less than the winner of  a tournament - it's not necessarily the best team. "

I'm going to argue against your straw man and say that the idea of a playoff isn't to decide the "best" team.  It is an opportunity to give the best teams an opportunity to prove it on the field.  Human voters and computers probably can get much closer to getting the top 6-8 teams correct than they can the top two.  At least there is a little bit more wiggle room since the 7th best or 9th best teams have a much weaker argument that they deserve a chance.

This was my thought exactly.

This was my thought exactly. GR3 is Bernard Robinson but more athletic and with a much better jump shot. While that reads like a Fred Jackson-ism, it may be quite accurate... lets hope this keeps up!

Yesterday was the worst of

Yesterday was the worst of all.  That TD was pretty clear.  Either the replay officials are totally incompetent or are on the take.  Neither one is a desirable scenario.

Also, the safety was pretty questionable.  The ref sat there for 20 seconds pondering the ramifications of the call.  On the replay it was apparent that McGloin was outside of the tackle box when he threw the ball (despite what Spielman was trying to convince the audience of).

Frustrating.

Dammit, Jim, you're drunk

Dammit, Jim, you're drunk again!

Alas, I also hate everyone... everyone named Gary F'ing Bettman!

Who is this McCarthy you

Who is this McCarthy you speak of?  Are there Communists that need to be removed from the B1G?!?

Mine:  Burke, Tim, GRIII, McGary and Horford

Major Minutes off the bench: Morgan, Vogrich, Stauskus and Levert

McLimans and Albrecht will get a few minutes each half.

Knowing what we know now,

Great analogy.  Hopefully it will ring even more true with a World Series victory in the D (and starting a semi-dynasty in Detroit for 15-ish years to come?)

Yes, this stuff happens all

Yes, this stuff happens all the time.  No, it should not be completely overlooked.  No, we don't need to spend any more time talking about it.  Both coaches look like whiny little girls.

I played a lot of football

I played a lot of football (high school and college).  I had plenty of stingers.  You don't do that with a stinger.

Also, you don't just lay on the ground "scared and frozen" either, especially if you are an "All-American".

I know you are trying to play devil's advocate, I'm just saying those two theories don't pass the logic test.

I was knocked unconcious momentarily in a scrimmage before my senior year of high school (wow, almost 10 years now?! yikes!).  My helmet was off and I was not allowed back on the field the rest of the day.  That is what responsible adults do.

Marky D is just like most of college football - he is a power hungry man who will do whatever it takes to win.  He does not truly care about these kids, they are just a tool to elevate his status and make more money.  This is why I like Hoke so much, he truly cares about his players on AND MORE IMPORTANTLY off the field.

Devil's Advocate

I'm not trying to disagree, I generally like Leyland (even for as stubborn as he is playing some players *cough*Rayburn*cough*).  But, wouldn't you agree that Leyland has been blessed with some tremendously talented teams compared to those of any of the slew of managers since Sparky retired?

Just like any sport, the coach/manager can only do so much with the talent he has.  The good ones know how to put their players in a position to succeed, after that it is up to the player to do the hard part.  Jim has been a good manager, but he also has been fortunate to have Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Placido Polanco, Curtis Granderson, Kenny Rogers, Justin Verlander, Prince Fielder, etc, etc, etc.

Except Jim Harbaugh doesn't

Except Jim Harbaugh doesn't coach for Stanford anymore... was he at the game or something and I didn't know about that?

Unfortunately, only about as much as it helped Western Kentucky...

Nope, I think you are in

Nope, I think you are in lock-step with all of us.  That is the first thing that I thought.  It all starts to make sense why the man is so successful when reading these types of things, though.

Meh, my inner Fred

Meh, my inner Fred Jackson would say he is more like Jim Brown but more dominant...

Well, since I watched the

Well, since I watched the 2000 Orange Bowl last night, I think that my answer has to be to surprise Alabama's defense and have Tom Brady throw to David Terrell all night long.  It worked then, I can't see why it wouldn't know!

I will be celebrating my

I will be celebrating my mother's 50th birthday at a party with her a lot of my family next Saturday.  Should be a fun party, but I am not going to have my full attention on my mother from about 8:00 onward!

I tried the DRIPA this summer from Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. in Warren.  Highly recommended!

Best summer memory - I got engaged to my fiance out in Yellowstone a few weeks ago.  That place is wonderful and was a great setting for a fantastic week.

If I can see one play this year, I want to witness Lewan piledrive Tom Gholston as Denard slices through the MSU defense for a long TD... yess [Mr. Burns style finger  tapping].

At least it is past noon and

At least it is past noon and Friday [shrugs].

This should actually be a

This should actually be a mandatory sign at all televised events, especially Washington State games!

I was a two time All-State

I was a two time All-State honorable mention safety in High School, two year starter on a D-2 team and had Al Horford throw down an Ally-Oop right over top of me in a high school basketball game.

Whoa, wait a second.

Are you trying to tell me that my knowledge of a Cover 2 defense and evaluations of high school athletes that may or may not attend Michigan has NO bearing on my 401k nor my financial future?!?!

That type of conversation

That type of conversation will typically happen at the end of a season and at the end of spring 'ball with either the offensive/defensive coordinator, your position coach, or both.

I sort of doubt (read: hope) that that conversation did not happen just now, unless there was some sort of situation that set it off (really don't want to speculate on that).

It is interesting that THAT

It is interesting that THAT is what you noticed and decided to comment on.

I'm excited to see where they go with the final season.  I have a feeling that Walter is going to meet an interesting demise by the end of the series, but how he gets to that point and who else doesn't make it is anyone's guess.
