Brett McMurphy on the state of the ACC: it's worse than you think

--Lawyers from ACC schools have shown up at headquarters to peruse the ESPN contract

--"We need to close the gap between (us) and the top two conferences (the Big Ten and SEC) that  have started to run away from us.” Run away? The race is over.

That, and much more at the link. It's an easy read. Brett McMurphy is witty.

One can be thankful Michigan is in the BIG10.

I agree. Still, I think the ACC dissolves. I can't imagine the smaller schools in the ACC will put up with getting left behind. That's really what these 7 teams are asking for: more revenue for themselves means less for the other 8 schools. The reality is, like the Pac10, this league is a hodge-podge of schools that couldn't care less about the league. When Maryland left directly for the B10, that was the death nell, as everyone else could see the writing on the wall, hence this ridic. GoR. The sad part is UNC and Duke and UVa and VT are probably the best fits UNC, Duke and UVa would never join the B10 IMO. Their southern pride would never allow for it. Hell, Delany, himselve a UNC grad tried 15 years ago to get the Tarheels and couldn't do it. Here's how it goes down:

The Mag7 convince the other 8 to dissolve the GoR and go their sep ways. UNC, Duke and Clemson go to the SEC. FSU, Miami and maaaaybe GT go to the B10. Louisville, Cuse, BC and Pitt to the B12 to further convice themselves that they are a P3 conf, but we all know they are pretending. The rest to CUSA/whatever. ND waits a few more years to see where the dust settles and how the B10-NBC deal affects theirs and their TV schedule.

Why would the other 8 votes to dissolve? To be orphaned and making even less money? Either the top teams are going to have to make an expensive deal and use their new conference money to buy off the lessor teams or the ACC is going to slowly die until 2036 because half the teams have no better options

I hope the left behind ACC and pac4 schools all just have entertaining league play that makes Rutgers and UCLA feel bad as they get whipped year in and out

After a certain amount it really doesnt matter no matter how much they want you to think it effects your team. It just pays for more buddies to be hired as administrators. Until we start paying kids for NIL I couldnt care less how much we make. Ill let you know why this is fact.

FSU/Clemson have been in the ACC all these years

Northwestern/Rutgers have been in the Big Ten all these years

We play these football games on Saturday in front of 100k fans and millions at home. The athletic department has a $100mil surplus currently.

NIL is when you pay someone for their name image and likeness for representing you in uniform during these games.

Currently our boosters pay to play or pay to stay for athletes.

Its been a real uphill battle but im hoping people will figure this out eventually.

You realize that is about 99.9 percent what they should get paid for.

UM should pay and let the NCAA try to punish them for actually paying for the athletes NIL.

That is why we are realigning and schools like Rutgers are being added to the big ten. $$$

Yes I am advocating ending the farce now (instead of later) and paying the kids.

Until then we can continue to call pay to play/pay to stay NIL if everyone wants. It will seem silly when we look back though.

Great recordings... thanks for posting.   And, of course, there is the 4 LP / CD set of Clapton's career - "Crossroads".

The ACC may be at that intersection, but - the sounds emanating from those discussions is no where near the quality of what you referenced.

I absolutely love this. How could this not be considered karma for the way the ACC completely destroyed the Big East football conference. It was one thing taking Miami and Virginia Tech, but then coming back and sinking the ship.

I love that there's only one copy of the grant of rights and everyone has to go to the league office to view it.

The Cover 3 Podcast suggested that we need Nick Cage to steal it and make copies for everyone.

Honest proposal here: an FBS Ivy League conference. Form a conference of the elite academic universities who are unwilling to spend at Big Ten / SEC levels. Cal, Stanford, Boston College, Syracuse, UVA, Georgia Tech, Duke, Wake Forest, Tulane. Commit to the student athlete model fully, set rigorous transfer policies, compete in FBS for football at about the current ACC level, and collaborate some on research. I'm working with the assumption that the remaining ACC programs who invest heavily in football would get invites from the Big Ten (Notre Dame, UNC), SEC (Clemson, FSU, Miami, Virginia Tech), and Big 12 (Pitt, Louisville, NC State).

Not sure how witty he is.  Why do these reporters feel they have to somehow insert themselves into the story?  What does his prior tweet have to do with the timeline?

Let's look at the ACC - the 14 teams - and, where exactly might they go.

  1. Clemson - SEC
  2. FSU - SEC
  3. Miami - SEC

  1. NC State - Big 12
  2. Pitt - Big 12 - AAU member
  3. Virginia Tech - Big 12
  4. Louisville - Big 12

  1. Virginia - B1G - AAU member
  2. North Carolina - B1G - AAU member
  3. Duke - B1G - AAU member

  1. Georgia Tech - hmm - the "new" ACC - AAU member
  2. Wake Forest - hmm - the "new" ACC
  3. Syracuse - hmm - the "new" ACC
  4. Boston College - hmm - the "new" ACC

  1. ND - can the meteor please visit South Bend?   Who cares..

And, of course - If the ACC somehow maintains its existence, then - who will they add to the four "new" ACC teams I noted above?   My guess - Conference USA teams will be targeted.

There's little doubt - the ACC if it exists in the future, will be a skeleton of what it once was.   This is so tragic - just think, the ACC was the conference that really began the expansion activities (which I don't care for) - when they raised the Big East a number of years ago.

One other perspective I read - was that the ACC was evaluating a number of other schools to add to the conference.   Two of the teams that were mentioned caught my eye.  Those two were - Oregon and Washington.

The addition of those two make perfect sense - and, possibly, a renaming of the conference.  Instead of "ACC" - Atlantic Coast Conference - perhaps ONCAC.   Oceans No-one Cares About Conference.

Another image that seems to align with the ACC members these days is that of a Hollywood classic.

The title.. "Mutiny on the Bounty".   Which schools will feel like they are in Tahiti after re-alignment is said and done?

The funny thing about the ACC contract is that you know at the time they told their attorneys (likely all the cream of the crop given the money involved) to create an absolutely bulletproof document.

As a conference formed by poaching and killing another conference, they knew that for the new conference to have credibility and stability it'd need to be as immune to being poached as legally possible in this country. No honor among thieves after all.

It's probably no surprise that a little over 10 years later, they're about to test the wits of those lawyers who crafted those texts back then against those of their current, cream of the crop attorneys.

If I understand this correctly, they’re short of the current amount of votes or support needed to be able to void the grant of rights contract.

Honestly, if I’m BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Ga Tech, or any of the other “small fries” in the ACC, I don’t know why in the hell I would support any of this. It seems like supporting this only gets me a smaller piece of the pie and a quicker path to irrelevance when the Clemsons, FSUs, UNCs and Dukes bolt for greener pastures.

When this game of conference realignment musical chairs stops, a lot of these other schools are going to be left without a home and relegated to C – USA, Sunbelt, MWC, MAC, or some other lower tier conference. If that’s going to end up happening, I’d rather get another 10 to 12 years of ACC money before settling for a much smaller load of revenue.

Especially considering most athletic departments operate in the red anyway.
